For most mini-PC buyers, the Ryzen 7 7840HS is the value choice when the finished computer is meaningfully cheaper, while the Ryzen 7 8845HS is the better fit when you will use its integrated NPU and Ryzen AI features. The Ryzen 7 8745H is worthwhile when a complete mini-PC costs substantially less and you do not need NPU-dependent software. All three use eight Zen 4 cores and 16 threads, so the surrounding systemmemory configuration, cooling, firmware and sustained power limitcan matter more than the processor name.
Quick verdict: which Ryzen is better for a mini-PC?
There is no universal winner because these processors are often sold in different mini-PC configurations and at different prices. Use the following decision rules:
- Choose Ryzen 7 7840HS when it is cheaper than an otherwise comparable 8845HS system and you want the highest stated Radeon 780M clock among the 7840HS and 8745H specifications.
- Choose Ryzen 7 8845HS when the mini-PC includes software that benefits from an NPU, or when its price is close to a 7840HS system. It has the same stated 5.1 GHz maximum boost as the 7840HS and an explicitly listed NPU.
- Choose Ryzen 7 8745H when the complete computer is substantially less expensive, has adequate dual-channel memory and cooling, and your workloads are conventional CPU, graphics or storage tasks rather than NPU-dependent AI.
Do not treat the 8745H as automatically equal to an 8845HS. AMD lists a lower 4.9 GHz maximum boost for the 8745H, and its product page does not list an AI engine. Conversely, an 8845HS mini-PC restricted by a weak cooler or low firmware power limit can be slower than a well-configured 7840HS machine.

The cache figures need careful reading. AMDs 7840HS specification lists 16 MB of L3 cache, while the 8845HS announcement lists 24 MB of total cache. Those labels are not identical measurements, so do not interpret the numbers as a direct like-for-like benchmark result. All three processors are based on Zen 4 and have the same core and thread count.

What the shared eight-core Zen 4 design means
Everyday responsiveness
Eight Zen 4 cores with simultaneous multithreading give each processor 16 logical threads. That is ample for office applications, browser tabs, software development, photo work, virtual machines and moderate content creation. In a mini-PC, responsiveness also depends on the memory kit, SSD, Windows or Linux configuration, and whether the firmware lets the chip sustain its rated power.
Single-threaded work
The 7840HS and 8845HS have a stated maximum boost of 5.1 GHz, compared with 4.9 GHz for the 8745H. Maximum boost is a ceiling reached under suitable temperature, power and workload conditions; it is not a guaranteed all-core operating speed. A 200 MHz difference can be visible in short, lightly threaded jobs, but the complete mini-PCs cooling and firmware determine how often that ceiling is reached.
Multithreaded work
Rendering, code compilation, compression and batch exports usually run for long periods. For these jobs, sustained package power and cooling are more important than the badge. A 7840HS configured near the upper end of its 35 54 W range can maintain higher clocks than a nominally newer 8845HS system that is thermally constrained. Compare measured sustained behavior for the exact model rather than assuming the 8845HS always wins.
Radeon 780M graphics: where the mini-PC platform matters most
All three processors are associated with Radeon 780M-class integrated graphics in the cited specifications or mini-PC implementations. AMD lists 12 graphics cores at 2.7 GHz for the 7840HS and 12 at 2.6 GHz for the 8745H. The 8845HS is listed with Radeon 780M in the cited mini-PC platform, but the supplied material does not provide a separate graphics-clock figure for that processor.
Memory configuration is critical
Integrated graphics uses system memory rather than dedicated VRAM. A mini-PC with two matched memory modules running in dual-channel mode can feed the GPU more effectively than a single-module configuration. Before comparing processor names, check whether the machine has two SODIMM slots, whether both are populated, the advertised memory speed, and the maximum supported capacity.

Power and temperature affect gaming
Radeon 780M performance changes with the firmware power target, cooling solution and temperature limits. Two computers carrying the same processor can deliver different frame rates if one has a larger heatsink, a faster fan profile or a higher sustained power allowance. Driver version, game settings and resolution also matter. The specifications establish the graphics hardware, not a universal frame-rate result.
What to expect from a 780M mini-PC
These systems are best suited to esports titles, older games, indie releases and modern games tuned to sensible settings. For demanding new releases, plan around reduced resolution or image-quality settings and verify independent testing of the exact mini-PC. An external graphics card can change the balance, especially on a system with USB4 or OCuLink, but the enclosure, power supply and interface all become part of the cost and performance equation.
Does the Ryzen 7 8845HS NPU matter?
What is different
AMD explicitly lists an NPU for the Ryzen 7 8845HS. The 7840HS specification lists up to 10 TOPS of AI-engine performance, while the 8745H page does not list an AI engine. An NPU is a dedicated low-power block intended for supported neural-network operations; it is not a replacement for CPU cores or a discrete GPU.
When it is useful
The NPU can matter for applications that specifically support Ryzen AI acceleration, such as compatible camera effects, audio processing, local inference or operating-system features that have an NPU execution path. Support is application- and version-dependent. Check the requirements of the software you actually plan to use instead of assuming that any AI-labelled feature will run on the NPU.
When it is not worth paying extra
If your mini-PC will run browsers, office suites, containers, development tools, media playback and conventional games, the NPU may remain idle. In that case, spend the difference on 32 GB or 64 GB of dual-channel memory, a larger SSD, better cooling or a faster network connection. The 8745H is not an appropriate choice when an application explicitly requires an NPU, because AMD does not list one for that processor.

Power, cooling and firmware: the hidden specification
Rated envelopes overlap
AMD lists a 35 54 W configurable range for the 7840HS. The 8745H has a 45 W default and a 35 54 W configurable TDP. AMDs 8845HS announcement lists a 45 W TDP. These figures describe processor power targets, not the wall draw of the mini-PC and not a guaranteed performance level.

Inspect the cooler
- Look for a substantial heatsink, heat pipes or vapor chamber rather than a very small blower alone.
- Check whether reviews report sustained clocks and temperatures after a long workload, not only a short benchmark run.
- Confirm that the firmware offers a performance mode and documents its power limits.
- Consider fan noise: a higher power target can improve speed while making the system louder.
Why a newer name may not be faster
Processor generations do not override thermal limits. If an 8845HS is held to a lower sustained wattage than a 7840HS, it can lose in long renders or compilations even though both have a 5.1 GHz maximum boost. The same principle applies to the 8745H: its lower listed boost does not by itself determine the outcome in a well-cooled or poorly cooled system.

Why the 8745H can still be the right buy
The 8745H keeps the same eight-core, 16-thread Zen 4 layout and Radeon 780M class of graphics. If its finished mini-PC is substantially cheaper and includes equal memory, storage, cooling and connectivity, the savings can outweigh the modest specification differences for general-purpose use. Avoid paying for a nominal discount if the cheaper configuration has one memory module, a smaller SSD or a weaker cooler.
Regional availability caveat
AMD marks the 8745H as China-region only on its current product specification. Stock and import availability change, so verify the exact seller, warranty region, keyboard or power-adapter requirements, and operating-system language before ordering. A processor that is inexpensive on paper may be a poor value if support or returns are difficult in your country.

How to compare two actual mini-PC listings
- Write down the complete configuration. Record processor, installed memory, number of modules, SSD model and capacity, wireless standard, ports, operating system and power adapter.
- Check sustained power settings. Look for the manufacturers performance, balanced and quiet modes, and any published long-run power limit. Do not compare a performance-mode 8745H with a quiet-mode 8845HS and call the result a processor test.
- Confirm cooling hardware. Read teardown information or detailed reviews for heatsink size, heat pipes, fan behavior and temperature under extended load.
- Verify graphics memory conditions. Prefer two matched memory modules for the integrated GPU and check whether the firmware reserves an adjustable amount of system memory for graphics.
- Match ports to your expansion plan. USB4 can support high-speed peripherals and some external-GPU arrangements; OCuLink can provide a direct external-PCIe connection on systems that include it. The enclosure, cable, power supply and external graphics device remain additional requirements.
- Check regional support. This is particularly important for the China-region 8745H listing. Confirm warranty handling, return shipping, power compatibility and firmware-update availability.
- Compare total cost, not bare-board price. Add memory, SSD upgrades, a suitable operating system and any external enclosure before deciding which processor is cheaper.

When two systems share a chassis, the 8845HS NPU and higher stated boost can be meaningful differentiators. When the cheaper model has more memory or a higher sustained power mode, those system-level differences may matter more for your workload.

Assuming the model number guarantees performance

Paying for an NPU without compatible software
The 8845HS NPU is a capability, not a blanket acceleration guarantee. Identify the application and version that will use it before paying a premium.
Importing a region-limited model without checking support
The 8745H is marked China-region only by AMD on the cited specification. Confirm warranty, firmware, power-adapter and return arrangements in your location.
Comparing prices without equivalent equipment
A lower headline price may exclude memory, storage or a suitable operating system. Compare complete, ready-to-use configurations and include upgrade costs.

Start with the finished mini-PC, not the processor label. If a 7840HS computer costs less than an equivalent 8845HS model, it delivers the same stated eight-core Zen 4 layout and 5.1 GHz maximum boost, making it the sensible value choice for most buyers. Pay for the 8845HS when its NPU has a defined role in your software or when the price gap is small. Choose the 8745H for a substantial system-level saving, provided you accept its 4.9 GHz rating, the lack of an AMD-listed AI engine, and the China-region availability qualification.
Whichever model you select, prioritize dual-channel memory, adequate cooling, a documented sustained power mode and the ports you actually need. Those details determine whether the mini-PC delivers the performance implied by its processor name.
