ONE+ is RYOBI’s 18V battery-and-tool platform; High Performance (HP) is a higher-performance battery tier inside that platform. An HP battery is still an 18V ONE+ battery, so RYOBI says it can be used with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ tool. RYOBI claims HP batteries deliver up to twice the runtime and 30% more power than its standard lithium-ion batteries, but those are manufacturer claims rather than independently verified results.
The practical choice depends on the exact battery capacity, tool workload, desired weight, HP-tool pairing and current price. The labels are not competing voltage systems, and a 2Ah HP pack should not be compared directly with a 4Ah standard pack as if capacity were equal.
First, separate the platform from the battery tier
What the ONE+ label means
ONE+ identifies the 18V system. Tools, batteries and chargers carrying the RYOBI 18V ONE+ designation are designed around that platform. When a product is described simply as a “ONE+ battery,” the important information is that it belongs to the 18V family; the label does not by itself tell you whether the pack is standard or High Performance.

What High Performance means
High Performance, usually shortened to HP, identifies a performance tier within ONE+. The cited HP product is the RYOBI 18V ONE+ 2Ah Lithium High Performance Battery, model PBP003. It is not a separate voltage platform. A battery can therefore be both an 18V ONE+ battery and an HP battery at the same time.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating “ONE+” and “High Performance” as mutually exclusive families. ONE+ answers “Which system does it fit?” HP answers “Which battery tier is it?”
Do Ryobi HP batteries work in regular ONE+ tools?
Yes. RYOBI’s product information says its 18V batteries work with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ tool. That compatibility statement covers an HP battery in a regular ONE+ tool as well as in a ONE+ HP tool. HP does not require a different voltage, adapter or special tool interface.
RYOBI recommends pairing HP batteries with ONE+ HP tools “For optimized performance.” Read that as a performance recommendation, not a compatibility rule. A standard ONE+ tool can accept the HP pack under the manufacturer’s 18V compatibility statement; the HP tool pairing is intended to make the most of the battery and tool designs together.

Before inserting any pack, check the voltage and platform markings on the tool and battery. The compatibility statement applies to RYOBI 18V ONE+ products, not automatically to every battery system that happens to use a similar slide-on shape. If a tool is not marked 18V ONE+, consult its manual or product listing rather than forcing a pack into the rails.
What performance difference does RYOBI claim?
For its HP battery technology, RYOBI states: “Delivers up to 2X more runtime and 30% more power compared to our standard lithium-ion batteries.” The statement appears on the product information for the 18V ONE+ 2Ah Lithium High Performance Battery (PBP003), current product information accessed in 2026.

Those figures should guide expectations, not serve as a promise that every HP pack will last exactly twice as long or make every tool 30% stronger. Runtime changes with the tool’s motor, material, load, operating pattern, battery capacity and condition. “Power” can also refer to the battery’s ability to support demanding loads rather than a uniform increase in the tool’s measured output.
Cell and electronics features
RYOBI describes HP construction as using advanced lithium-ion cells and IntelliCell electronics, along with a Cool-Core design. IntelliCell electronics are intended to manage cells and pack operation, while Cool-Core is the cooling-related design language used in the product information. These features describe the pack design, but the published material does not provide a standardized performance table for every HP model.

The differentiator supported by the product pages is the HP tier and its stated comparison with standard lithium-ion batteries, not a claim that every component is unique to HP.
Capacity is a separate buying axis
Capacity is expressed in ampere-hours (Ah). It is one of the most useful numbers on a battery label, but it is not the same thing as the HP designation. Two batteries can both be ONE+, or both be HP, while having different capacities and therefore different runtime potential and physical trade-offs.

Because the cited HP example is 2Ah and the cited standard example is 4Ah, comparing their observed runtime directly would mix two variables: battery tier and capacity. A larger-capacity standard pack may provide more usable runtime in a particular tool than a smaller HP pack, even though the HP tier carries RYOBI’s performance claim. That is why a fair comparison uses the closest available capacities, the same tool and the same workload.

What Ah can tell you
- A higher Ah rating generally indicates more stored charge within the same platform, but actual runtime still depends on the tool and load.

Choose according to the work you actually do
Occasional, light-duty tasks
For short drilling, driving, trimming or touch-up jobs, a standard ONE+ battery may be the sensible starting point. If the tool is used intermittently and you already own a compatible pack, the HP claim may not justify buying another battery on its own. Capacity and the number of packs you have available can matter more than the tier for brief tasks.

Tasks that keep a motor under substantial load are the situation in which the HP proposition is most relevant. Examples include sustained cutting, heavy drilling or long periods of material removal. An HP battery paired with a ONE+ HP tool follows RYOBI’s optimization recommendation, but the real benefit still depends on the tool, capacity and conditions. Select a capacity that does not make the tool uncomfortably heavy for the way you work.
Maximum time between charges
If minimizing battery changes is the priority, compare higher-capacity packs first, then compare the HP tier among packs with similar Ah ratings. A 2Ah-versus-4Ah comparison cannot answer whether HP is worthwhile because capacity is not held constant.
Lowest carry weight
For overhead work, ladders or tasks requiring constant repositioning, a smaller pack can make the tool easier to handle. The cited pages do not establish a universal HP weight penalty or advantage, so use the dimensions and weight for the exact model you are considering rather than assuming that every HP battery is larger or heavier.
A step-by-step way to select the right battery
- Identify the tool platform. Read the tool label or manual and confirm that it is a RYOBI 18V ONE+ model. Do not rely only on the physical shape of the battery slot.

- Match the battery capacities as closely as possible. Record the Ah rating and model number before starting.
- Charge both packs fully using the normal equipment specified for those batteries, and allow them to reach the same starting condition.
- Perform the same repeatable task and record operating time, amount of work completed and any noticeable performance drop.
- Repeat the comparison if the result is important. One run can be affected by material variation, temperature or technique.
- Record the result as specific to that tool and task. Do not generalize it into a universal HP percentage.
This method can tell you whether the difference matters in your workshop, while keeping RYOBI’s published “up to” figures in their proper context.

Assuming ONE+ means standard only
ONE+ is the platform name, not a promise that the battery is the basic tier. Read the full product name for HP wording and check the model number.
Assuming HP means a different voltage
HP remains part of the 18V ONE+ system. The relevant compatibility question is whether the tool and battery are RYOBI 18V ONE+, not whether one carries the HP label.
Reading “up to 2X” as exactly double
The phrase is a maximum manufacturer claim. It does not establish a fixed multiplier for every battery capacity, tool or job, and the cited page does not identify a test protocol.
Comparing PBP003 and PBP004 as a clean experiment
PBP003 is a 2Ah HP example; PBP004 is a 4Ah standard example. Their capacities are different, so their runtime cannot isolate the effect of the HP tier.

Treating HP pairing as mandatory
RYOBI’s recommendation to pair HP batteries with ONE+ HP tools is for optimized performance. It does not override the manufacturer’s statement that 18V batteries work with any 18V ONE+ tool.
Assuming every HP pack has identical results
Capacity, model design and workload still matter. Use the specifications for the individual pack instead of transferring the PBP003 claim unchanged to every HP model.
Are Ryobi High Performance batteries worth it?
HP is worth considering when you regularly use demanding tools, want to follow RYOBI’s HP-tool pairing recommendation, or value the possibility of the performance improvement RYOBI advertises. Standard ONE+ batteries can be the better fit when your work is intermittent, when a larger-capacity standard pack better suits the job, or when the current price difference is more important than the claimed tier benefit.
There is no single winner based only on the words ONE+ and HP. Start with 18V ONE+ compatibility, compare similar Ah ratings, match the battery to the tool’s workload, check the exact model’s size and weight, and verify current local pricing. That process gives you a meaningful choice without treating a platform label, a performance tier and a capacity number as if they were the same specification.
