A Ryobi battery that will not charge is usually waiting on a basic condition—no power, an incomplete connection, incompatible hardware, or a pack outside the charger’s temperature range. It can also indicate a failed battery or charger. Start by identifying the exact battery and charger models, then work through power and fit checks before interpreting the LEDs. Ryobi’s indicator codes differ by charger and region, so never apply a light pattern from one model to another.
Start with the exact battery and charger model
“Ryobi battery” covers several platforms and charger designs. The same color combination does not necessarily mean the same thing on a single-port 18V charger, a multi-port charger, or a charger sold in another country. Find the model number printed on the battery and charger before diagnosing a light pattern. Ryobi’s general product-support system uses the exact model number to locate the applicable manual, parts information, repair details, service options, and warranty information.
Record three details before you begin:
- The battery platform and model number.
- The charger model number and whether it has one port, two ports, or six ports.
- Your country or region, because support procedures and warranty routes differ.
If you cannot identify the model, treat the LED display as unknown and use the manual or the manufacturer’s support page rather than guessing.

Safe first checks
Disconnect the charger before inspecting it. Do not use charging equipment with a cut cord, bent or exposed plug, cracked housing, melted plastic, burn marks, or loose terminals. Do not open the battery, bridge its terminals, “jump” individual cells, or bypass its protection circuitry; those actions are not established as safe fixes by the official guidance used here.

Verify the outlet and charger connection
- Plug another known-working appliance into the same wall outlet. If it does not operate, restore power at the switch or breaker and try a different outlet.
- Connect the charger directly to a functioning outlet, unless the charger’s manual specifically permits a particular power strip or extension arrangement.
- Push the charger plug fully into the charger and the wall outlet. Look for a loose fit that could interrupt power.
- Inspect the charger cord, plug, housing, and battery contacts for visible damage or contamination. Stop if anything is damaged; do not continue charging.
Confirm compatibility
Use only a battery and charger combination that the charger’s manual or compatibility list identifies as compatible. A battery that physically slides into a tool or charger is not automatically approved for every charger in the product family. Match the platform, voltage family, and charger model exactly.
Seat the pack completely
Remove the battery, check that no object is obstructing the rails or contacts, and reinstall it in the orientation shown by the charger. Press until it is fully latched. An almost-seated pack can leave the charger powered while preventing a normal charge cycle. If the charger reports a defective condition, remove and reinstall the pack once before moving to further testing.
Could temperature be delaying the charge?
Yes. Ryobi Support Australia states, “If the battery is hot or cold, charging will pause.” The Australian troubleshooting guidance for the covered chargers recommends allowing the pack to return to 10°C–37°C before trying again. That range is regional operational guidance from that support page, not a universal specification for every Ryobi battery family or country.
What to do after a hot or cold indication
- Remove the battery as directed by its manual.
- Move it to a dry indoor location away from heaters, direct sunlight, water, and freezing conditions.
- Allow the pack to return naturally to the 10°C–37°C range specified in the Australian guidance. Do not force-cool or force-heat it.
- Reconnect the charger and observe the indicator again.
A pack can also pause while the charger evaluates a deeply discharged condition. Leave it connected for the evaluation period described in the exact charger manual. Do not infer that a delayed start means the pack is permanently dead.
Read the LED pattern for the exact charger
The following chart applies to the listed Australian single-port 18V charger models documented by Ryobi Support Australia. It is not a universal Ryobi code chart.
| Indicator pattern | Meaning in the Australian single-port 18V guidance | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Red flashing; green off | The charger is evaluating a hot, cold, or deeply discharged battery. Charging starts after the temperature condition clears or the charger pre-charges the deeply discharged pack. | Leave the pack installed while the condition is evaluated, provided the equipment is undamaged and the manual allows it. If temperature is the cause, wait for the pack to return to the recommended range. |
| Red and green flashing together | The battery pack or charger may be defective. | Remove and reinstall the pack once, then test another compatible battery if one is available. |
| Red off; green flashing | Fast charging is in progress. | Keep the charger connected and allow the cycle to finish. |
| Red off; green on | Charging is complete. | Remove the fully charged pack according to the manual and disconnect the charger when finished. |
Multi-port chargers have a different chart. Ryobi’s documented dual- and six-port guidance includes an orange flashing temperature-delay state and green energy-saver states. Those signals must be interpreted using the chart for that specific multi-port model. If your manual is unavailable, identify the model through Ryobi support instead of transferring the single-port meanings.

Use a second battery to isolate the likely failure
Cross-testing is the most useful diagnostic step after power, compatibility, seating, and temperature checks. It narrows the likely source but does not prove it.

- Insert the second pack fully and observe the charger’s normal cycle.
- If the second battery charges normally while the original produces the defective indication or will not begin charging, the original pack is more likely to be defective.
- If both compatible batteries produce the same defective indication or fail in the same way, the charger becomes the more likely problem.
- If neither test is conclusive, stop repeated attempts and consult the exact model manual or regional support service.
Do not use an unapproved battery merely as a test. A cross-test is meaningful only when the substitute pack is compatible with that charger.
Symptoms and the most useful next step
No light at all
Check the wall outlet, charger plug, cord, and visible housing damage first. Confirm that the charger itself is receiving power and that the battery is seated. If the outlet and connections are good but the charger remains dark with a known-compatible battery, the charger may require service.
The red light flashes but green never appears
On the Australian single-port chart, this is the evaluation state for a hot, cold, or deeply discharged pack. Allow a temperature-affected pack to return to the stated range. For a deeply discharged pack, leave it connected for the charger’s pre-charge/evaluation process. If the pattern persists outside those conditions, consult the model manual and cross-test with another compatible battery.
Red and green flash together
For the covered Australian single-port chargers, this means the battery pack or charger may be defective. Reinstall the pack once, then cross-test. A second battery that charges normally points toward the first pack; the same failure with two compatible packs points toward the charger.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Green flashes, but the pack never seems to finish
The Australian single-port guidance defines flashing green as fast charging. Confirm that the battery is actually supported by the charger and that the indicator belongs to the model you own. If the cycle does not complete as described in the manual, stop relying on a different model’s chart and contact support.

The charger says complete, but the tool quickly loses power
A complete-charge indication means the charger has ended its cycle; it does not by itself establish the battery’s usable capacity or condition under load. Check the pack on a compatible tool and compare its behavior with a known-good compatible pack. If the original repeatedly performs poorly while the other pack works normally, request a warranty assessment or service for the original battery rather than attempting cell-level repair.
Before buying a replacement battery or charger
Do not purchase a replacement solely because one charge attempt failed. First complete the outlet, compatibility, temperature, seating, LED, and cross-test checks. A replacement battery is the logical next step only when a compatible second pack works normally and the original repeatedly fails. A replacement charger is more plausible when two known-compatible batteries fail in the same charger.
Ryobi’s 18V ONE+ range includes replacement batteries such as a 4Ah pack, and the PCG002 is an 18V ONE+ charger, but those product names do not make every battery-and-charger combination interchangeable. Confirm the exact platform and model listing before ordering. Product availability, sellers, and prices change, so check the current listing and warranty terms at the time of purchase. If the failed item may still be covered, contact Ryobi first; buying a replacement could forfeit a simpler warranty route.
Keep the failed pack and charger separate until the diagnosis is clear. Photograph the model labels and LED behavior, and retain proof of purchase if available. Those details can help customer service determine whether the issue is a battery claim, charger claim, or compatibility problem.
When the battery is probably at fault
The battery is the stronger suspect when a second compatible pack charges normally in the same charger, while the original repeatedly triggers a defective indication or fails to begin charging after temperature and seating checks. Physical damage, swelling, leaking, a burnt smell, or damaged contacts are additional reasons to stop using it immediately. Do not attempt to disassemble or revive a visibly damaged pack.
Warranty eligibility depends on the exact product, purchase circumstances, and country. Use the model-specific support route to have the pack assessed; do not assume that a warranty period or replacement policy from another region applies to you.

When the charger is probably at fault
The charger becomes the stronger suspect when two known-compatible, undamaged batteries produce the same defective indication or fail to charge, while the outlet and connections are confirmed good. Check the charger’s manual for any model-specific reset or service instruction. If none resolves the issue, use the manufacturer’s service or warranty process. Do not continue operating a charger with damaged wiring, a burnt odor, heat damage, or visibly deformed plastic.

For readers in the United States, Ryobi’s battery-support guidance directs owners to customer service for a battery that is still within its warranty coverage. It also directs owners to The Home Depot for replacement of listed out-of-warranty battery platforms and to Call2Recycle to locate a battery-recycling point. These routes are US-specific; readers elsewhere should use their local Ryobi support channel and local battery-recycling rules.
Ryobi’s US support hub provides model-based access to manuals, parts, repair information, service-center lookup, and warranty information. Have the exact battery and charger model numbers ready when you contact support. A clear description of the LED pattern, the outlet check, the temperature conditions, and the result of the second-battery test will make the diagnosis more efficient.
What not to do
- Do not charge a pack with a charger that is not listed as compatible.
- Do not use a damaged charger, cord, plug, battery casing, or contact assembly.
- Do not heat a cold battery rapidly or cool a hot battery with ice or refrigeration.
- Do not bridge terminals, bypass protection electronics, connect cells directly, or open the pack.
- Do not keep retrying a pack that smells burnt, leaks, swells, sparks, or becomes abnormally hot.
- Do not apply an LED chart from a different charger model, port count, region, or battery family.
A practical decision path
- Identify the battery and charger models and your region.
- Verify a powered outlet, secure charger connection, undamaged equipment, and listed compatibility.
- Remove and fully reseat the battery.
- If the charger indicates temperature evaluation, let the pack return naturally to the model’s specified range. The Australian guidance uses 10°C–37°C.
- Read the LED chart for that exact charger; use the manual when the chart is unavailable.
- If a defective state remains, reinstall once and cross-test a second compatible battery.
- Use the result to request battery or charger service, warranty assessment, replacement, or recycling through the correct regional channel.
The key distinction is between a normal pause and a failed component. Temperature evaluation and deep-discharge pre-charge can delay the start without proving that the battery is dead. A repeatable defective indication, especially when confirmed by a compatible cross-test, is the point at which support or warranty service is safer and more appropriate than further experimentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Ryobi battery not charging?
Check the outlet, charger connection, visible damage, compatibility, seating, and battery temperature first. A hot, cold, or deeply discharged pack may pause while the charger evaluates it. If another compatible battery charges normally, the original pack is more likely defective; if both fail, suspect the charger.
What does a flashing red light mean on a Ryobi charger?
On the documented Australian single-port 18V chargers, flashing red with green off means the charger is evaluating a hot, cold, or deeply discharged pack. Leave it connected as the manual directs and allow a temperature-affected battery to return to 10°C–37°C. Other models may use different meanings.

What does flashing red and green mean?
For those Australian single-port models, flashing red and green indicates that the battery pack or charger may be defective. Remove and reinstall the pack once, then test another explicitly compatible battery. This code is not universal across all Ryobi chargers.
Can I charge a Ryobi battery when it is cold?
Charging may pause when the pack is cold. Move it to a dry indoor location and let it warm naturally. Ryobi Support Australia gives 10°C–37°C for the guidance on its covered chargers; check your own manual because the range is not universal to every platform or country.
How can I tell whether the battery or charger is bad?
Use a second, undamaged battery that the charger explicitly supports. If the second pack charges, the first battery is the stronger suspect. If both packs show the same failure, the charger is more likely at fault. The test narrows the cause but does not replace a service assessment.
Should I buy a replacement immediately?
Not after a single failed attempt. Complete the basic checks and cross-test first. Check warranty eligibility before buying, then match the exact platform and charger model. Prices and availability vary, so verify current seller, compatibility, and warranty details.
Where can US owners get help or recycle a failed battery?
Ryobi’s US support guidance directs owners to customer service for batteries still under warranty, The Home Depot for listed out-of-warranty battery replacements, and Call2Recycle for recycling locations. Other countries should use their local Ryobi support and recycling systems.
Is it safe to open or jump-start a Ryobi battery?
No. Do not open the pack, bridge terminals, connect cells directly, or bypass its protection circuitry. Stop using any pack that is swollen, leaking, burnt, sparking, or abnormally hot and arrange manufacturer service or appropriate recycling.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact Ryobi battery and charger, verify power and compatibility, reseat the pack, and allow temperature-related delays to clear. Read only the LED chart for your model. A compatible second-battery test usually indicates whether the pack or charger deserves service, warranty attention, replacement, or recycling.
