Ryobi 40V and 36V batteries belong to different regional product lines in the official pages reviewed. Ryobi’s United States materials describe a 40V outdoor-tool system, while Ryobi Australia describes a 36V garden-tool system. The pages confirm compatibility inside each labelled platform, but they do not say that a 36V battery works in a 40V tool, that a 40V battery works in a 36V tool, or that the two labels represent electrically identical designs.

For a safe purchase, match the battery to the tool’s exact model and regional product page, inspect the physical battery slot, and use a charger approved for that regional system. Do not choose a replacement solely because the number in its name looks similar.

What the 40V and 36V labels actually mean

The voltage numbers identify how Ryobi labels its regional outdoor-power platforms, not a universal cross-region standard. On Ryobi’s US site, batteries and tools are presented as the 40V system. On Ryobi Australia’s site, outdoor and garden batteries are presented as 36V. The official pages do not explain why the labels differ or confirm that the underlying electrical design, connector, battery-management system or voltage measurement convention is the same.

That distinction matters because a platform name is only one part of compatibility. A battery can have a similar-looking voltage label yet use a different housing, contacts, locking mechanism, communication interface or charger specification. None of the reviewed manufacturer pages authorizes swapping a US 40V battery into an Australian 36V tool, or the reverse.

The manufacturer’s within-platform statements

Ryobi’s US 40V 4Ah product page says, “RYOBI 40V batteries are compatible with any RYOBI 40V product.” That statement is about the US 40V system. It should not be expanded into a claim about 36V products. Read the US 40V 4Ah product page.

Ryobi Australia gives a more specific condition for its 36V HP 8Ah battery: it is compatible with Ryobi 36V garden tools “with a battery slot large enough to accept this battery design.” That wording means the 36V platform label alone is not enough; the tool must also physically accept that particular battery housing. See the Australian 36V HP 8Ah specifications.

Can you use a 36V battery in a 40V Ryobi tool?

Do not assume that you can. The official pages reviewed do not state that Ryobi 36V and 40V batteries interchange, and they do not provide an approved adapter or conversion procedure. Use the battery family printed in the tool’s documentation and on the regional product page. If the tool is a US 40V model, select a battery identified for Ryobi 40V products in that market. If it is an Australian 36V garden tool, select a compatible Ryobi 36V battery and verify the slot size.

Why a seemingly close voltage is not enough

  • Physical fit: The battery may not slide into the rails or lock into the latch. Ryobi Australia explicitly limits its 36V HP 8Ah compatibility to tools with a sufficiently large slot.
  • Electrical interface: The contacts and any tool-to-battery control signals may differ. The reviewed pages do not document cross-region connector or communication compatibility.
  • Charger requirements: A charger designed for one regional platform may not be approved for another. Ryobi Australia says its AU/NZ chargers can only be used in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Safety and warranty: An unapproved combination can create a safety risk and may fall outside the manufacturer’s support or warranty conditions. The manufacturer pages do not authorize cross-platform substitutions.

US Ryobi 40V batteries

Ryobi’s US catalog presents 40V batteries for its 40V outdoor-tool range. The catalog describes that range as having “over 85” products, a manufacturer count rather than an independently audited statistic. Open the US Batteries & Chargers catalog.

40V 4Ah High Performance EDGE Battery

The US product listing identifies the 40V 4Ah High Performance EDGE Battery as model OP40406TA. Ryobi states that 40V batteries are compatible with any Ryobi 40V product in this system. Capacity is 4 amp-hours (Ah), which describes the battery’s stored charge rating; it is not a guaranteed runtime figure for every mower, trimmer or blower. Tool workload and operating conditions determine how long a charge lasts.

Check model OP40406TA on Ryobi’s US product page before ordering or replacing a pack.

40V 8Ah High Performance EDGE Battery

The US catalog also lists the 40V 8Ah High Performance EDGE Battery, model OP40806TA. It belongs to the same US 40V platform and is presented for use with Ryobi 40V products. An 8Ah rating indicates greater stated capacity than a 4Ah pack, but it does not by itself promise a particular number of minutes in a specific tool.

See the US 40V 8Ah product page for the model and current product information.

Other capacities in the US catalog

Ryobi’s US battery catalog includes 4Ah, 6Ah, 8Ah and other 40V options. Choose among them only after confirming that the pack is intended for the exact 40V tool and that its physical size is acceptable for the tool’s battery bay. A higher Ah number is a capacity choice, not evidence that the battery belongs in a 36V product.

Australian Ryobi 36V batteries

Ryobi Australia labels its outdoor-power batteries as 36V. The regional pages describe a 36V 4Ah battery and a 36V HP 8Ah battery for garden tools. These are Australian product references and should not be treated as specifications for the US 40V range.

36V 4Ah battery

Ryobi Australia lists a 36V 4Ah battery for 36V outdoor power tools. The support catalog also lists an R36SK4 36V 4Ah battery and charger kit. Verify the tool model and the battery listing together, because the 36V label does not identify every housing size or every tool interface.

36V HP 8Ah battery

The Australian 36V HP 8Ah battery is a higher-capacity example in that regional line. Ryobi states that it fits 36V garden tools only when the tool has a battery slot large enough for this battery design. Therefore, even within the Australian 36V family, check the bay dimensions and the exact tool compatibility information before buying an 8Ah pack.

  1. Read the tool label and manual. Record the exact model number, the voltage/platform marking and the market in which the tool was sold.
  2. Open the matching regional product site. US tools should be checked against Ryobi’s US 40V pages; Australian tools should be checked against Ryobi Australia’s 36V pages. Do not rely on a search result from another country.
  3. Match the battery platform first. Select a 40V battery for a documented US 40V tool or a 36V battery for a documented Australian 36V tool. Treat a different label as incompatible unless Ryobi explicitly says otherwise for your exact models.
  4. Compare the complete model number. Capacity alone is insufficient. Confirm the battery model, such as OP40406TA or OP40806TA in the US examples, against the tool’s compatibility information.
  5. Inspect the battery bay. Check the rails, latch, contacts and available clearance. For the Australian HP 8Ah battery, Ryobi specifically requires a slot large enough for the design.
  6. Verify the charger. Use the charger specified for the same regional battery family. Australian guidance restricts AU/NZ chargers to Australia and New Zealand, and the reviewed pages do not establish cross-region charger compatibility.
  7. Contact regional support if any detail conflicts. Have the tool model, battery model, charger model and country of purchase ready. Do not test an uncertain combination by forcing the pack into the tool.

Choosing 4Ah or 8Ah capacity

Amp-hours describe stated battery capacity, not a universal runtime promise. Ryobi’s US pages provide 4Ah and 8Ah examples, and Australian pages provide 4Ah and HP 8Ah examples. The useful choice depends on the confirmed platform, the tool’s workload and whether the larger housing fits.

When a 4Ah pack is the sensible match

  • You have a tool whose documentation lists a 4Ah battery or whose battery bay is designed around the smaller pack.
  • You want the documented 4Ah option for occasional or moderate work within the same regional platform.
  • You need to stay within a physical size that may not accommodate the Australian HP 8Ah design.

When an 8Ah pack may be appropriate

  • Your tool is confirmed for the same platform and the battery bay accepts the larger design.
  • You need the higher stated capacity of an 8Ah model and accept that actual runtime varies by tool and conditions.
  • You have verified the charger and regional model information rather than assuming that every 8Ah pack is universal.

Do not convert Ah values into a direct 36V-versus-40V performance ranking. The available official pages do not provide an independent test comparing runtime, power or efficiency between the two regional systems.

Chargers, kits and regional purchasing

A battery purchase is incomplete until the charger is identified. Ryobi Australia states that its AU/NZ chargers can only be used in Australia and New Zealand. The reviewed sources do not establish that an Australian charger is approved for a US battery, or that a US charger is approved for an Australian battery. Match the charger to the battery family and country of sale.

For US buyers, Ryobi’s catalog is the relevant starting point for 40V replacement batteries and charger combinations. For Australian and New Zealand buyers, use the specific 36V battery page or the R36SK4 kit listing, then confirm that the tool and charger models correspond. A battery-and-charger kit can be practical when replacing both items, but it does not remove the need to verify the tool’s platform and slot.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming 36V and 40V are automatically the same

The regional labels alone do not prove electrical equivalence. No reviewed manufacturer page states that the two systems share chemistry, connectors, control electronics or voltage convention. Treat them as separate platforms unless Ryobi provides model-specific confirmation.

Buying by amp-hours only

An 8Ah battery is not automatically a replacement for every 4Ah battery. Capacity does not identify the platform, housing or charger. Confirm the exact battery family first, then select the capacity that fits the tool.

Ignoring the physical slot

The Australian HP 8Ah listing expressly requires a battery slot large enough for that design. A pack that cannot seat and lock correctly must not be forced into the tool.

Turning manufacturer claims into independent test results

Ryobi’s “over 85” US 40V product count and its compatibility statements are manufacturer-published information. They are not an independent comparison of 36V and 40V performance. The reviewed pages contain no independent named statistics or comparative laboratory results.

What the official pages do not establish

Several frequently repeated explanations cannot be confirmed from the cited product information. The pages do not explain why US materials use 40V while Australian materials use 36V. They do not state whether one label is a nominal voltage and the other a maximum voltage, and they do not document shared chemistry, connector design, battery-management electronics or tool-interface protocols. They also do not publish an independent head-to-head performance test.

Because those details are absent, avoid statements such as “36V is just the nominal version of 40V,” “the batteries are electrically identical,” or “a simple adapter makes them interchangeable.” Those conclusions require a suitable technical source or direct confirmation for the exact models.

A practical decision checklist

  • Is the tool labelled Ryobi 40V or Ryobi 36V?
  • Which country and regional product page match the tool?
  • Does the battery’s exact model appear in the tool’s compatibility information?
  • Will the pack physically slide into the bay, lock and leave adequate clearance?
  • Is the charger approved for that battery family and country?
  • Are you treating Ah as capacity rather than a guaranteed runtime figure?
  • Have you avoided assuming that a different regional voltage label is interchangeable?

If any answer is uncertain, pause the purchase and ask the appropriate regional Ryobi support channel with the model numbers in hand.

Bottom line for US, Australian and New Zealand buyers

Choose a Ryobi 40V battery for a confirmed US Ryobi 40V tool, and choose a Ryobi 36V battery for a confirmed Australian 36V garden tool. Within those platforms, follow Ryobi’s stated model and physical-fit conditions. Do not substitute one regional battery for the other based only on “36V” and “40V” appearing close on the label; the official pages reviewed do not authorize that interchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ryobi make both 36V and 40V batteries?

Yes. Ryobi’s US materials list a 40V battery platform, while Ryobi Australia lists 36V batteries for outdoor and garden tools. The labels correspond to the regional product lines shown on those sites.

Can I use a US 40V battery on an Australian 36V tool?

The reviewed official pages do not approve that combination. Match the battery to the tool’s regional platform, exact model and physical slot instead of relying on the voltage numbers alone.

Is an 8Ah battery always better than a 4Ah battery?

8Ah indicates a higher stated capacity, but it does not guarantee a specific runtime and may use a larger housing. Confirm tool compatibility and slot clearance before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an Australian charger in the United States?

Ryobi Australia says its AU/NZ chargers can only be used in Australia and New Zealand. The reviewed sources do not establish cross-region charger compatibility, so use a charger approved for the battery’s market.
