Ryobi 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries are separate battery families and are not interchangeable in tools. An 18V ONE+ pack is intended for Ryobi 18V ONE+ tools, while a 40V pack is intended for Ryobi 40V tools. Do not put an 18V battery in a 40V tool or a 40V battery in an 18V ONE+ tool.
Some Ryobi chargers are exceptions to that separation: the PCG007 and the legacy P137 are designed to charge batteries from both families. A dual-platform charger does not make the batteries interchangeable in tools.
Are Ryobi 18V and 40V batteries interchangeable?
No. Ryobi 18V ONE+ and Ryobi 40V are different tool platforms. Match the battery family printed in the tool specification to the battery family printed on the pack.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 18V ONE+ tool: use a Ryobi 18V ONE+ battery.
- 40V tool: use a Ryobi 40V battery.
- Dual-platform charger: may accept both families, but only for charging and maintenance.
Ryobi states that its 18V ONE+ batteries are compatible with any Ryobi 18V ONE+ product. The current ONE+ collection describes more than 300 compatible products. That compatibility statement applies to the ONE+ platform; it does not extend to 40V tools.

Ryobi presents its 40V batteries as a separate product family. The manufacturer’s listings do not establish cross-use of 18V packs in 40V tools or 40V packs in 18V tools. Treat the voltage family as a hard compatibility boundary unless the exact tool documentation says otherwise.
Why the voltage families stay separate
The 18V and 40V labels identify different electrical platforms, connectors and control requirements. Tool manufacturers design the battery interface, electronics and protection system around the specified family. A pack that physically appears close enough to fit is not automatically electrically or mechanically approved for another platform.
Do not try to bridge the families with homemade wiring, third-party adapters or modified terminals. The available manufacturer information does not establish that such adapters are approved or safe. An improvised connection can defeat mechanical keying or protection features, damage the tool or pack, and create a battery safety hazard.
What “18V ONE+ compatibility” actually means
Ryobi’s ONE+ claim is a platform promise: an 18V ONE+ battery can be used across Ryobi 18V ONE+ products, subject to the individual tool’s instructions and any model-specific requirements. It is not a promise that every Ryobi battery, regardless of voltage label, works everywhere.
What the 40V designation means
40V tools belong to Ryobi’s higher-voltage outdoor-equipment family. The correct replacement is a Ryobi 40V battery specified for the tool, not an 18V ONE+ pack with a larger amp-hour number. Check the tool label, owner’s manual or product page before purchasing.
Will a Ryobi 18V battery work in a 40V tool?
No. A Ryobi 18V ONE+ battery is not a substitute for the 40V battery specified by a 40V tool. The lower-voltage pack cannot be treated as an equivalent source simply because both products are rechargeable Ryobi batteries.

Likewise, a 40V pack should not be installed in an 18V ONE+ tool. Even if a third-party accessory appears to make the connection possible, that does not establish compatibility, safe operation or warranty support.

Check the tool before buying a replacement
- Turn off the tool and remove its existing battery.
- Read the voltage family printed on the tool, battery bay label or manual: “18V ONE+” or “40V.”
- Record the exact tool model number. Similar-looking tools can have different battery requirements.
- Buy a battery from the matching family and follow the capacity and charging instructions for that model.
- If the listing is unclear, confirm the requirement with Ryobi documentation before ordering.
Use the exact model number when asking about runtime, replacement packs or charger support. “Ryobi battery” is not specific enough to identify the correct family.
What tools belong to each Ryobi battery family?
The practical distinction is the platform named by the tool, not a broad category such as “power tool” or “outdoor tool.” The same type of job can exist in both families, but the battery requirement remains model-specific.
| Battery family | Use it with | Do not assume | Best selection check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryobi 18V ONE+ | Ryobi tools explicitly labeled 18V ONE+ | That it powers a 40V tool | Confirm the tool carries the ONE+ designation and note its model number |
| Ryobi 40V | Ryobi tools explicitly labeled 40V | That it powers an 18V ONE+ tool | Confirm the tool’s 40V requirement and the battery capacity allowed by its manual |
Examples of the right decision
- If you own an 18V ONE+ drill, choose an 18V ONE+ replacement pack, even if a 40V pack is available at a similar price.
- If you own a 40V mower or other 40V outdoor tool, choose the 40V battery specified for that model.
- If you own tools in both families, keep two battery inventories and label them clearly.
Ryobi’s current product listings show the families separately. They do not provide a basis for treating the two groups as one interchangeable battery system.
Can one Ryobi charger charge both 18V and 40V batteries?
Yes, but only with a charger designed for both platforms. Ryobi describes the PCG007 as “Compatible with Any RYOBI 18V ONE+ or 40V Battery.” That statement concerns the charger’s charging function; it does not change tool compatibility.
Ryobi also describes the P137 as a dual-platform charger that charges and maintains 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries. The P137 information comes from an older Spanish-language official product page, so treat it as a legacy model and verify current availability and regional support before relying on it.

|---|---|---|---|
| PCG007 | Yes, according to Ryobi | Yes, according to Ryobi | One charger can serve both families; batteries still remain platform-specific in tools |
| P137 | Ryobi describes charging and maintenance | Ryobi describes charging and maintenance | Legacy official listing; check current availability before recommending or buying |
PCG007 advertised charge times
Ryobi advertises that the PCG007 charges a named 4Ah 18V ONE+ EDGE battery in 15 minutes and a named 6Ah 40V battery in one hour. These are manufacturer claims for those specific example capacities, not independent tests and not universal charging times for every pack.
Actual time can vary with the battery’s state of charge, temperature, age, capacity and charger conditions. Do not use the 15-minute figure to estimate the time for a different 18V pack, and do not assume every 40V battery reaches full charge in one hour.
What simultaneous charging and maintenance means
Ryobi describes the P137 as providing status indicators and simultaneous charging or maintenance for 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries. Read the charger’s current manual for the exact behavior of its bays, indicator lights and charging order. “Dual-platform” means the charger recognizes both battery families; it does not mean a single battery can be shared between tools.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to choose between an 18V ONE+ and a 40V tool
Choose the tool first, then buy the matching battery. Voltage alone is not a complete runtime or performance comparison, and amp-hour ratings from different platforms should not be compared as though they describe identical energy or operating time.
1. Start with the work
Identify the exact task and tool model you need. A drill, blower, trimmer or mower may be available in more than one Ryobi family. The tool’s specified platform determines the battery family.
2. Account for batteries you already own
If you already have several 18V ONE+ packs and chargers, an 18V ONE+ tool can let you share that inventory. If your existing equipment is 40V, choose a 40V tool to avoid buying a second battery ecosystem. Owning both families is reasonable when your tools require them, but plan for separate packs and compatible charging equipment.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Compare runtime using exact packs
Runtime depends on the tool, workload, operating conditions and the exact battery capacity. Ask for a model-specific runtime estimate rather than assuming a larger Ah number in one family will outperform a smaller pack in the other. A 4Ah 18V pack and a 4Ah 40V pack are not equivalent just because the Ah labels match.
4. Confirm charger coverage
If you own both families, a charger such as the PCG007 may reduce the number of chargers you keep. Confirm that the charger model is genuinely dual-platform and that it is available in your region. Do not infer dual-platform charging from a charger’s appearance or from a single-family charger listing.
5. Check current availability and price
Battery, tool and charger availability and prices change by region and date. Verify the current listing for the exact model, included battery, warranty terms and charger compatibility before placing an order.
Replacing a Ryobi battery: a safe process
- Identify the family. Read the tool and old battery labels. Record whether they say 18V ONE+ or 40V.
- Record the model. Write down the tool model and, if available, the old pack model and capacity.
- Check the manual. Look for approved battery capacities, charging instructions and temperature limits.
- Match the connector and family. A replacement must be an approved battery for that platform; physical fit by itself is not sufficient.
- Use the correct charger. Use a charger specified for the battery family, or a documented dual-platform model such as the PCG007.
- Inspect before charging. Do not charge a pack that is cracked, swollen, wet, unusually hot, leaking or otherwise damaged.
- Charge under the stated conditions. Place the charger on a stable, ventilated surface and follow its indicator lights and manual.
- Test in the specified tool. Install the charged pack only in a tool from the matching family.
When the replacement listing is ambiguous
Stop if a seller calls a pack merely “Ryobi compatible” without naming the voltage family and tool platform. Confirm the exact model before buying. A listing that mentions a dual-platform charger does not prove that the battery itself works in both tool families.

The battery will not slide into the tool
First check that the tool and battery belong to the same family. Do not force the pack, file the rails or remove the keying. If both labels match, inspect the rails for debris or damage, remove the battery and follow the tool manual’s installation procedure.

The charger rejects the battery
Check whether the charger is intended for 18V ONE+, 40V or both. Inspect the battery and charger contacts for contamination or damage, allow an overheated pack to return to the temperature range specified by the manual, and retry. Persistent fault indicators require the charger or battery manual’s service guidance.
The charge time is longer than an advertised figure
Compare the pack with the exact example used in the claim. Ryobi’s PCG007 figures are 15 minutes for a named 4Ah 18V ONE+ EDGE battery and one hour for a named 6Ah 40V battery. A different capacity, temperature, battery condition or starting charge level can produce a different result.
A third-party adapter is being considered
Do not assume an adapter is approved because it allows a connection. The available manufacturer information does not establish adapter safety or authorization for cross-platform use. Use the battery family specified by the tool instead.
Frequently misunderstood points
“Both batteries are lithium-ion, so they should interchange.”
Chemistry alone does not define a tool platform. The voltage family, interface, protection electronics and tool requirements also matter.
“A charger that accepts both batteries proves the tools can share them.”
It proves only that the charger is designed to charge both types. Charging compatibility and tool compatibility are separate decisions.
“A higher Ah number will always run the tool longer.”
Capacity is only one factor. Runtime also depends on platform voltage, tool design, load, conditions and the exact pack. Compare packs only in the context of the specified tool and task.
“The oldest charger listing must still be available.”
Not necessarily. The P137 dual-platform description is from a legacy official page. Check current regional availability and documentation before planning around it.

Quick decision checklist
- Is the tool labeled 18V ONE+ or 40V?
- Does the battery carry the same family designation?
- Have you recorded the exact tool and battery model numbers?
- Does the manual specify a capacity or pack type?
- Is the charger approved for that battery family?
- If charging both families, is the charger explicitly dual-platform?
- Are any charge-time claims tied to the same capacity and model you own?
- Are you avoiding unverified adapters and forced connections?
- Have you checked current availability in your region?
The simplest safe rule is to keep the tool and battery in the same Ryobi family, and to treat a dual-platform charger as a charging convenience—not as a battery adapter.
