The multi-tool Ryan Gosling’s character uses in Project Hail Mary is reported to be a Leatherman Surge—but the identification is unofficial. The film gives the heavy-duty tool a prominent on-screen moment; evidence does not show that Leatherman is becoming Hollywood’s favourite accessory or replacing luxury watches such as Rolex and Omega.
Which Leatherman does Ryan Gosling use in Project Hail Mary?
T3 reported on March 30, 2026, that viewers identified the tool as a Leatherman Surge, while describing that identification as unofficial. T3’s account does not cite confirmation from the studio or Leatherman.
The Gadgeteer later reported that Leatherman sent several models to the film’s props department and that the Surge was chosen. That is secondary reporting, not an official statement from the production or the company. No verbatim confirmation from a named studio representative or Leatherman spokesperson is available in the cited coverage. The Gadgeteer’s report therefore adds context, but does not make the model identification an official confirmation.

What makes the Surge a heavy-duty multi-tool?
Leatherman’s US product listing describes the Surge as a 21-tool multi-tool built around large pliers and full-size blades. It includes replaceable wire cutters, four tools that open from the outside, and a blade exchanger that accepts either a saw or a file. Those are practical features for a tool intended to handle more demanding jobs than a compact keychain multi-tool.

Is the Surge a sensible everyday carry?
The Surge’s 12.5 oz weight is the central trade-off. Its broad tool set, full-size blades and replaceable components may suit someone who regularly needs a substantial multi-tool. For someone who mainly wants a few emergency tools in a pocket, that weight and the 4.5-inch closed length may be more than necessary.

The available information establishes the Surge’s specifications, not how it performs in independent testing or how it compares head-to-head with alternatives. The film appearance is not evidence of an endorsement, a special movie edition, or a recommendation from the production.
Does this mean Leatherman is replacing Rolex or Omega in Hollywood?
No. The evidence supports one film appearance and secondary reporting about the prop selection. It does not quantify Leatherman use among actors, stylists or productions, or establish a broader trend in celebrity accessories.

The watch comparison is a contrast in the kinds of celebrity coverage the story evokes, not a product-versus-product contest. For example, GQ’s January 13, 2026 coverage documented Colman Domingo’s relationship with Omega and his awards-season watch appearances; it does not suggest that a multi-tool is displacing luxury watches. GQ’s report is about watch appearances, while Project Hail Mary supplies a single on-screen tool moment.
T3 journalist Matt Kollat observed that Leatherman was not advertising its products as “as seen in Project Hail Mary” and inferred that the production chose the tool for practical reasons. That is the journalist’s interpretation, not a statement by Leatherman or the filmmakers.
