RustChain describes Proof-of-Antiquity (PoA) as a way to reward eligible participation from physical computers, with reward weight influenced by hardware class, tenure, and attestation checks. Its protocol document lays out how miners submit hardware attestations and how rewards are settled; it does not establish that hardware age is cryptographically proven, that spoofing is impossible, or what a miner will earn.

What RustChain’s Proof-of-Antiquity means

RustChain presents itself as a blockchain network that gives different reward weight to participating hardware. Its Proof-of-Antiquity design combines a project-defined hardware multiplier with checks intended to assess whether a machine is physical and whether its reported hardware signals are credible. The project frames this as a way for older or less common machines to participate, rather than treating every CPU as equivalent.

“Antiquity” should not be read as a cryptographic certificate of a computer’s manufacture date. In the protocol description, the system evaluates hardware signals and fingerprint confidence, then applies project-defined weights and policy settings. The materials reviewed do not show an independently verified method for proving a machine’s true age.

How RustChain describes attestation and settlement

The RustChain protocol specification calls its consensus and settlement flow RIP-200. It describes a sequence in which miners report hardware evidence, an attestation node validates it, and eligible miners are included in an epoch’s accounting.

  1. Collect signals: A miner gathers hardware signals and fingerprint checks, then packages them in a signed attestation payload.
  2. Submit for validation: The miner sends the payload to an attestation node, which checks identity and fingerprint data.
  3. Enter the epoch ledger: Miners accepted as eligible are recorded for the epoch.
  4. Settle at epoch close: The node computes eligible weights, settles balances, and anchors a settlement hash or proof externally, as described by the protocol.

RustChain says a miner’s reward is proportional to its eligible weight divided by the total eligible weight of all miners. Listed inputs include validated hardware presence, an antiquity multiplier, fingerprint confidence, anti-emulation checks, and possible policy settings. A multiplier by itself therefore does not determine an individual payout.

How the project says it checks for emulation

The protocol lists six classes of checks: clock drift or oscillator variance, cache timing, SIMD identity and timing, thermal entropy or load response, instruction-path jitter, and anti-emulation heuristics. The design premise is that physical machines have small timing and behavioral imperfections, while virtual machines or emulators may produce unusually clean or flattened signals.

RustChain’s protocol describes the aim this way: “The goal is not perfect certainty; the goal is to make spoofing expensive and brittle.” These are the project’s stated anti-spoofing measures, not independent evidence that every VM or emulator will be detected or that attacks cannot succeed. Readers should treat physical-hardware eligibility and the effectiveness of these checks as project claims.

What hardware RustChain says can participate

The RustChain FAQ names PowerPC G3, G4, and G5 systems; IBM POWER8; 68K Macs; SPARC; MIPS; RISC-V; Cell BE; retro x86; and modern CPUs as supported hardware categories. It says real hardware is required and that VMs or emulators earn effectively nothing. Eligibility can depend on the project’s current rules and software, so check RustChain’s documentation before buying, restoring, or configuring a machine.

Project-published multiplier examples

The following examples are figures published by RustChain on its homepage, accessed October 7, 2026. They are project statements, not independent tests or guarantees.

Hardware or adjustment RustChain-published figure
PowerBook G4 / Power Mac G4 2.50× base multiplier
Power Mac G5 2.00× base multiplier
IBM POWER8 S824 1.50× base multiplier
Modern x86_64 0.80× base multiplier
Mining tenure +5% multiplier growth per year, capped at +50% after ten years

The tenure figure is a project-published adjustment, not a promise that a miner will remain eligible or receive a particular amount. RustChain’s homepage also states a reward pool of 1.5 RTC per ten-minute epoch, split among miners, and a fixed total supply of 8,388,608 RTC. Actual distribution per participant depends on the epoch pot and total eligible weight under the protocol description.

These figures do not establish expected income, market value, or net return. The material reviewed did not verify a market price or miner profitability; RustChain’s homepage describes a reference rate as milestone-gated and says there is no off-ramp. Do not infer earnings from a hardware multiplier alone.

How to start, according to RustChain

RustChain’s homepage points to installation using the clawrtc package through pip or npm, followed by installation with a wallet identifier and starting the miner. It separately references manual setup for PowerPC and other exotic systems. The official mining guide is described as covering wallet setup, running the miner, fingerprint attestation, and earning RTC. These are project instructions, not a tested installation walkthrough; consult the current official guide and documentation for exact commands and compatibility before proceeding.

What is and is not established about the network

RustChain’s FAQ says the network is live and directs readers to an explorer and public APIs for node health, epoch, and active-miner information. Its homepage also displays node status and a project version. Those statements and status displays are attributable to the project; current operation, miner counts, and software behavior have not been independently verified here.

RustChain describes RTC as its native token and says it anchors attestation or settlement information to Ergo. The FAQ also describes a Solana bridge, while the homepage text says the bridge is disabled. That inconsistency means current bridge availability should not be assumed; check the live project documentation. The project’s statements about token supply, settlement, and network status should likewise be distinguished from independently verified operation or economic outcomes.

What to weigh before using old hardware

  • Eligibility: Confirm that the exact machine and operating environment are currently supported by RustChain.
  • Attestation: Understand that the stated checks aim to make emulation harder; they are not proof that all spoofing is prevented.
  • Rewards: A base multiplier is only one input in the project’s described proportional allocation. It does not provide an earnings estimate.
  • Practical costs: The published material cited here does not establish purchase cost, power use, reliability, or net earnings for particular machines.
  • Network and token status: Check current project pages for operational status and bridge details rather than relying on potentially conflicting descriptions.

RustChain’s homepage summarizes its ethos with the line, “Every computer deserves dignity. Every CPU gets a vote.” That is project wording; it should not be mistaken for a guarantee of eligibility, network participation, or token value.
