Choose Linux if you want a headless, scriptable Rust server managed over SSH and you are comfortable maintaining the operating system and its libraries. Choose Windows if you prefer graphical administration, Windows-native tools, or the closest match to Rust’s officially supported client environment.
Neither platform has a documented universal performance advantage. Facepunch supports dedicated servers on Windows and Linux, so the better choice depends on administration style, maintenance skills, security controls, licensing, and the way you plan to host the server.
The short decision: Linux or Windows?
| Choose Linux when… | Choose Windows when… |
|---|---|
| You are comfortable with SSH, shell scripts, permissions, firewalls, and package updates. | You want GUI-oriented administration and familiar Windows desktop or server tools. |
| The server will run headlessly on a rented machine or bare-metal host. | You already operate Windows infrastructure and want to reuse your monitoring and management workflow. |
| You want easy automation for restarts, updates, backups, and scheduled tasks. | Your administrators are more experienced with Windows patching and account management than Linux. |
| You can track distribution, GLIBC, and library support over the server’s lifetime. | You value client-platform parity: Rust is officially listed for Windows 11 64-bit, while the client is not natively supported on Linux. |
Facepunch’s Rust server guide describes the server as working on “Windows, Linux or OSX.” That establishes cross-platform server support, not equal ease of use or a guaranteed frame-rate difference. Select the operating system your team can secure, update, troubleshoot, and restore reliably.
What a Rust dedicated server needs
Memory and storage baseline
Facepunch’s current server guide lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space as baseline planning figures. The same guide notes that a 6k map uses more memory and that larger worlds require additional disk space and RAM. These are minimum planning references, not a promise that every population, plugin set, or map will run comfortably at those levels.

| Resource | Official guidance | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 12 GB free; a 6k map uses more. | Reserve headroom for the operating system, map generation, entities, plugins, and population growth instead of allocating exactly the baseline. |
| Disk | 15 GB free. | Allow extra capacity for updates, backups, logs, multiple map saves, and larger worlds. |
| Storage type | SSD or NVMe is highly preferred. | Use solid-state storage for faster startup, save operations, updates, and recovery. |
| CPU and network | No universal cross-OS benchmark is published in the official material. | Choose a host with adequate single-thread performance, stable network connectivity, and enough bandwidth for your expected population. |
Server support is separate from client support
Rust’s client installation information lists Windows and macOS, and says the client is not natively supported on Linux. That does not prevent a Linux dedicated server: server and client are separate installations. Players can connect from supported client systems to a server hosted on Linux or Windows.
Linux: installation and day-to-day operation
Why Linux is attractive
Linux is usually the natural fit for a headless server. SSH gives you remote administration without a desktop session, shell scripts can automate updates and restarts, and tools such as screen let you detach from a running console. This is particularly useful for rented virtual machines, dedicated hosts, and infrastructure managed by more than one administrator.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
The trade-off is that Linux administration is an ongoing responsibility. You must understand users and permissions, firewall rules, service supervision, package updates, disk usage, and the compatibility of the distribution’s libraries with the current dedicated-server build.
Linux installation path
- Provision a supported distribution. Do not build a new server on a distribution that has reached the end of its supported lifecycle. Facepunch announced in April 2025 that Debian 10 and Ubuntu 18 dedicated-server support would be retired, so check the current compatibility guidance before deploying or rebuilding.
- Create a dedicated service account. Run the game server with a non-root account and keep its files in a directory owned by that account. This limits the damage if the game process or an add-on is compromised.
- Install SteamCMD. Facepunch documents SteamCMD as the installation and update method. The Linux example downloads
steamcmd_linux.tar.gz, extracts it, and starts it with./steamcmd.sh. - Install the Rust server application. Use the Rust App ID
258550with SteamCMD. A typical unattended sequence is./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit; keep the server files in a known path so backups and scripts can find them. - Create a startup script. Put the RustDedicated launch line and your server settings in a shell script. Mark it executable with
chmod +x start-rust.sh. Keep configuration in one place and document the ports, identity, world size, and restart policy. - Run it inside a persistent session or service manager. Facepunch’s Linux guidance demonstrates
screen. For example, start a named session withscreen -S rust, launch the script, and detach with the screen detach key sequence. A service manager is preferable when you need automatic restarts and boot-time startup. - Administer remotely. The Linux console is not interactive in exactly the same way as the Windows console, so use RCON for commands, moderation, scheduled tasks, and controlled shutdowns. Restrict RCON access to trusted addresses and protect its credentials.
Linux maintenance checklist
- Track the distribution’s security-support dates and the libraries required by the current Rust server build.
- Test operating-system and Rust updates on a staging instance before applying them to a live community server.
- Keep a restorable copy of the server configuration, identity information, world saves, and any installed extensions.
- Monitor free memory, disk space, CPU load, network errors, and process restarts.
- Use least-privilege users and an explicit firewall policy rather than exposing every host port.
Windows: installation and day-to-day operation
Why Windows is attractive
Windows is a practical choice when your administrators prefer a graphical desktop, Windows-native monitoring, remote desktop, or existing Windows automation. It can also reduce the learning curve for teams that already patch and secure Windows hosts every day.

- SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).
- CREATE AND STORE MORE. Make more room for your 4K videos and high-resolution images with capacities from 500GB[1] up to 4TB[1] on M.2 2280 built with our trusted 8th generation SANDISK BiCS QLC 3D CBA NAND.
- IT GOES WHERE YOU GO. With an all-new power efficient design, your drive delivers high performance with low power, giving you more time to be productive while on the go.
- UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
The costs are operational rather than purely technical. A graphical environment consumes resources, licensing can affect the hosting budget, and administrators still need to configure firewalls, accounts, updates, backups, and remote access securely.
Windows installation path
- Provision and patch the host. Apply current security updates, create a dedicated account for the server, and decide whether administration will use a secured remote-desktop connection or another controlled management channel.
- Install SteamCMD. Use the Windows SteamCMD package and a separate directory for the Rust server files. SteamCMD is the common installer and updater on both operating systems.
- Download the server application. Run SteamCMD with Rust App ID
258550and update or validate the installation whenever Facepunch publishes a server update. - Create a batch file. Facepunch’s Windows example launches
RustDedicated.exe -batchmodefrom a batch file. Put your chosen startup settings in that file so the launch is repeatable after a reboot. - Choose a restart method. You can start the batch file manually, launch it through Task Scheduler, or wrap it in a service-management approach. Whichever method you use, make sure a failed process does not silently leave the server offline.
- Use RCON for administration. RCON remains useful for remote commands, scheduled maintenance, moderation, and graceful shutdowns. Limit access through the Windows Firewall and avoid publishing the RCON port to the entire internet.
Windows maintenance checklist
- Schedule operating-system patches around your community’s active hours and reboot deliberately.
- Exclude only the required server directories from security scanning when justified; never disable host protection broadly.
- Use a dedicated, non-administrator account for the game process where the surrounding tooling permits it.
- Back up worlds and configuration before applying a Rust update or changing map settings.
- Review firewall rules after every port or hosting change.
Administration differences that matter
| Task | Linux approach | Windows approach |
|---|---|---|
| Remote access | SSH and command-line tools; ideal for headless hosts. | Remote desktop or Windows administration tools; familiar to GUI-oriented teams. |
| Launching the server | Shell script, screen, or a service manager. |
Batch file containing RustDedicated.exe -batchmode, Task Scheduler, or service tooling. |
| Automation | Shell scripts, cron or service timers, and standard Unix utilities. | PowerShell, batch files, Task Scheduler, and Windows monitoring products. |
| Console control | RCON is especially important because the Linux console is not interactive in the same way. | Local console access is more familiar, but RCON is still the safer method for remote administration. |
| Failure recovery | Service supervision can restart the process without a logged-in desktop. | Task Scheduler or service wrappers can restart the process after crashes or reboots. |
| Security model | Requires confidence with Unix users, permissions, firewall rules, and library lifecycle. | Requires confidence with Windows accounts, firewall rules, patching, and remote-access hardening. |
Performance: what is known and what is not
No current, controlled official benchmark establishes that Linux or Windows is categorically faster for a Rust dedicated server. Do not choose an operating system based on an unverified percentage or a claim that one platform always produces better tick rates.

The documented baseline is the same on both platforms. Actual stability depends on map size, concurrent players, entity count, plugins, save activity, CPU characteristics, memory headroom, storage latency, and network quality. A well-maintained server on either operating system is a better choice than a neglected server on the theoretically preferred platform.
Map size and population planning
- A larger procedural world consumes more memory and storage than a small one.
- More players and entities increase simulation, networking, and save pressure.
- Keep free disk space available for updates and backups; filling the volume can turn a routine save or update into an outage.
- Use SSD or NVMe storage because Facepunch explicitly highly prefers it for the server.
Security and hosting controls
Protecting a public server
Facepunch recommends a dedicated environment, strong DDoS protection, the ability to change IP addresses quickly, and administrators who understand firewall configuration. These recommendations apply whether the host runs Linux or Windows.

- Maintain a tested backup and recovery procedure, not just occasional manual copies.
- Keep an emergency plan for changing the public IP if the host is attacked.
Hidden and private servers
The Steam query port exposes server information. Facepunch warns that it should be blocked when a server must remain undiscoverable. Blocking it can affect visibility and discovery, so confirm that the privacy requirement is more important than appearing in normal server listings.
Private, unofficial, and community servers are allowed under Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines, updated 15 July 2025, provided they are fairly labelled and comply with the guidelines and applicable law. The policy also permits monetisation under those conditions.
Common problems and recovery steps
The server will not start after an update
- Read the first error in the server log rather than only the final shutdown message.
- Confirm that SteamCMD completed an update for App ID
258550and that the executable path in your script or batch file is still correct. - Check free disk space and permissions on the installation and save directories.
- Review operating-system compatibility, especially if the Linux distribution is old or has recently changed its standard libraries.
- Restore the previous configuration or backup on a test instance before making several live changes at once.
Players report lag or disconnects
- Check CPU, memory, disk latency, and network saturation while the problem occurs.
- Compare the current map size and population with the host’s available headroom.
- Look for repeated process restarts, save errors, or a nearly full disk.
- Check firewall and DDoS-mitigation logs for dropped or rate-limited traffic.
- Do not assume changing operating systems will fix a resource bottleneck without measuring the host first.
A private server is still discoverable
Review the Steam query-port rule and every firewall layer between the host and the internet. Facepunch specifically identifies the query port as the source of server information exposure. Also check that a hosting control panel or upstream firewall has not reopened the port.
Remote administration is unsafe
Move RCON and SSH or remote-desktop access behind source restrictions, a VPN, or another private management path. Rotate credentials, remove unused accounts, and verify that only the required ports are reachable from outside.
Which choice fits your situation?
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You manage Linux servers professionally and want unattended automation. | Linux | SSH, shell scripting, service managers, and headless operation align with your existing skills. |
| You are hosting for friends and are much more comfortable with Windows administration. | Windows | The familiar desktop and native tools reduce setup and troubleshooting friction. |
| You are renting a small headless instance and want no graphical desktop. | Linux | A minimal installation leaves more resources for the game process and is easy to manage over SSH. |
| Your organization standardizes on Windows patching, monitoring, and remote management. | Windows | Using the established operational stack can be safer than introducing an unfamiliar platform. |
| You cannot commit to tracking Linux distribution and library support. | Windows | Choose the platform your team can maintain consistently; Linux’s lifecycle burden does not disappear after installation. |
| You need a hidden server with strict network controls. | Either | Privacy depends on firewall and query-port configuration, dedicated hosting, DDoS protection, and operational discipline rather than the OS alone. |
Final recommendation
For most technically confident operators running a headless public server, Linux is the more flexible administration platform. For teams that prioritize graphical management, Windows-native tooling, or minimal Linux lifecycle work, Windows is the safer practical choice. In both cases, provision more than the documented baseline when your map or population demands it, use SSD or NVMe storage, secure RCON and query traffic, and test updates before applying them to the live world.
