If Rust shows no servers under Official, Community, or Modded, start with Steam’s server-browser setting: open Steam > Settings > In-Game and set Server browser pings / minute to at least 5000. Then launch the normal Rust branch, clear restrictive filters, enable Show Empty, opt out of beta branches, and temporarily disable any VPN. These steps address the most common client-side causes before you investigate firewall, router, or server configuration.

An empty list does not necessarily mean Rust servers are offline. The client first asks Steam for Rust server addresses and then sends Source A2S queries to those servers. A server appears only when it answers, so packet loss, geographic IP positioning, a server-side outage or attack, filters, or local security software can all produce a blank result for one player while others still see servers.

Why Rust can show an empty server browser

Rust’s browser is not a single catalogue downloaded in one step. Facepunch describes a two-stage process: the game asks Steam for Rust servers, then sends Source A2S queries to the returned addresses. Only servers that answer those queries are displayed. If either stage is delayed or blocked, the list may be slow, incomplete, or empty.

The result is user-dependent. Packet loss between your connection and a server, a regional result based on your public IP, a temporary server-side outage or attack, or a local firewall can affect your list without affecting every other player. That is why “no servers” is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis.

What you observe Most useful interpretation First check
Every category is empty, including Official A client, Steam, network, or security-setting problem is more likely than a single server outage. Set the Steam ping limit to 5000, verify the normal branch, and restart Steam after checking firewall software.
Official has results but Community or Modded is empty Filters or the default hiding of empty servers may be excluding the latter categories. Clear filters and enable Show Empty.
The browser is empty but a known endpoint accepts a direct connection The game can reach that server; browser filters, query responses, or geographic discovery are the likely fault area. Recheck Show Empty, filters, VPN location, and the server’s query port.
A direct connection also fails The endpoint may be offline, the route may be blocked, or the server’s game port may be unreachable. Check the endpoint, local security software, router/NAT, and host availability.
Only servers in an unexpected region appear Your public IP may be geolocated differently from your physical location. Disconnect the VPN and retry.

The table is a troubleshooting guide, not a guarantee: a server can fail to answer queries while still accepting some connections, and a regional outage can affect several categories at once.

Fix the Rust server list on your PC

1. Raise Steam’s server-browser ping limit

Facepunch’s documented recommendation is a minimum of 5000 server-browser pings per minute. In the Steam desktop client:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Steam > Settings.
  3. Open In-Game.
  4. Find Server browser pings / minute and set it to 5000 or higher.
  5. Close Settings and reopen Rust’s server browser.

The figure is a configuration threshold from Facepunch Studios (2024), not a count of available Rust servers and not a promise that every server will appear. A low value can leave discovery incomplete because the client is making fewer queries during the browser refresh.

2. Launch the normal Rust branch

Steam installs a separate Rust Staging Branch. It is intended for testing and generally has fewer servers than the regular game. If you launched the staging branch by mistake, close it and start the ordinary Rust entry in your Steam library.

Do not use the staging branch as a test of the production server population. A sparse list there can be normal, while the same filters in the standard branch may show many servers.

3. Remove filters and show empty servers

Rust’s browser can hide valid results without displaying an error. Clear name, region, player-count, ping, tag, and other restrictive filters, then enable Show Empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s guidance says empty servers are hidden by default unless they are in Official, Friends, History, or Favorites. Therefore, an empty Community or Modded tab may simply contain servers with no current players. Toggling Show Empty also refreshes Community and Modded results, so switch it on even if you believe the filter was already clear.

After changing filters, inspect each category separately. A filter left active in one view can make that view appear broken while another tab still has results.

4. Leave beta branches and verify the installation

A beta branch can use a different client build from the current public release and may not return the same browser results. To return to the public build:

  1. In Steam, right-click Rust in your library and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Betas tab.
  3. Opt out of any beta or test branch.
  4. After Steam finishes switching versions, use the installed-files option to Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Launch Rust again through Steam.

Verification repairs missing or mismatched local files; it does not make an offline server visible. Its purpose here is to remove a client-version or installation problem before you continue to network tests.

5. Disconnect a VPN while testing

Facepunch says Rust’s list is populated geographically from IP geolocation. A VPN can therefore place your request in a different region and return an unexpected or sparse set of servers. Disconnect the VPN, close and reopen Rust, and compare the result with the VPN disabled.

This is a diagnostic step, not a statement that every VPN blocks Rust. If the browser returns after disconnecting, the VPN’s exit location or network path was changing discovery. You can then decide whether to use a different exit location or leave the VPN off for Rust.

6. Restart the modem or router and test security software

Restart your modem or router, wait for the connection to return, and then launch Steam and Rust again. This clears a temporary local-network state and gives the client a fresh route to Steam and game servers.

Antivirus and firewall products can interfere with Steam’s secure connections or Rust’s server queries. Temporarily test with those controls disabled only long enough to identify the cause, and restore protection immediately afterward. If changing a firewall or security rule makes a difference, completely exit Steam and start it again; Facepunch specifically recommends this restart after firewall or security changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not permanently leave the firewall disabled. Instead, create the narrow Steam and Rust permissions required by your security product, then retest with protection enabled.

7. Confirm Steam and Rust are online and current

Make sure Steam is not in Offline Mode and that Rust has completed every pending update. Steam’s support guidance identifies network and firewall conditions as causes of secure-connection failures. A client that is offline, partially updated, or unable to establish Steam’s connection may not populate the browser even when your general web access works.

After updating, quit Steam from the client menu rather than merely closing the window, start it again, and launch Rust normally. This ensures the updated Steam session and game build are used for the next browser request.

A reliable order for player-side troubleshooting

Running fixes in a consistent order prevents a filter change from being confused with a network change. Use this short runbook:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Quit Rust.
  2. Set Steam’s Server browser pings / minute to 5000 or higher.
  3. Confirm you will launch the standard Rust branch, not Rust Staging Branch.
  4. Check Steam is online and install pending Steam or Rust updates.
  5. Opt out of Rust beta branches and verify the game files.
  6. Restart the modem or router.
  7. Disconnect the VPN for the test.
  8. Start Steam again, launch Rust, clear browser filters, and enable Show Empty.
  9. Test Official, Community, and Modded separately.
  10. If the list remains blank, test a known server endpoint with the direct-connect method below.

This sequence separates settings and branch problems from route and security problems. If the list returns before the final step, the last change you made identifies the relevant control area.

Join a server without using the browser

If you know a server’s IP address and port, Rust provides a direct-connect fallback. From Rust’s main menu, press F1 to open the console and enter:

connect IP:Port

Replace IP:Port with the server’s actual endpoint, then submit the command. Facepunch names BattleMetrics.com and Just-wiped.net as external ways to find a Rust server IP and port. They are lookup services, not proof that a server is online or that its address is permanent, so use the endpoint shown for the specific server and wipe.

Direct connection is a diagnostic as well as a workaround:

  • It succeeds while the browser remains empty: your game can reach that endpoint. Focus on filters, the Show Empty setting, VPN geolocation, Steam discovery, or the server’s query response.
  • It fails immediately: check the address and port, then consider a server outage, firewall rule, router/NAT issue, or provider security rule.
  • One endpoint works but others do not: the problem may belong to those servers or their routes rather than to your entire Rust installation.

A successful direct connection does not make a server appear in the browser. Browser visibility depends on the separate query process described by Facepunch.

Do not launch RustClient.exe directly for secure servers

Launching RustClient.exe directly disables Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Facepunch states that this mode can connect only to EAC-unsecure servers, and EAC-unsecure servers do not appear in the normal Rust browser.

For Official and ordinary community servers, start Rust through Steam using the standard EAC-enabled launch option. Otherwise you can misdiagnose a deliberately limited EAC-unsecure session as a missing-server problem. Directly launching the executable is not a valid way to obtain the normal secure server list.

When the problem is on the server-owner side

If you operate the server, browser visibility depends on two different UDP endpoints. The official Rust wiki requires both server.port and server.queryport to be open and reachable over UDP. They must not use the same port, and the query port is required for the server to appear in the browser.

Check both ports at every network boundary

  • Server host firewall: allow inbound UDP traffic for the configured game port and query port.
  • Router or NAT: forward both UDP ports to the machine running the Rust server.
  • Provider security rules: allow both ports in the hosting provider’s firewall or security group.
  • Configuration: confirm server.port and server.queryport are present, reachable, and different.

Opening only the game port can produce a confusing result: players may be able to connect by a known endpoint while the server remains absent from browser results because its query port cannot answer. Conversely, a reachable query port without the game port can make a listing visible but prevent players from joining.

Use direct connection to isolate the owner-side fault

Ask a player to test the exact endpoint with connect IP:Port. If that works but the listing is missing, investigate the UDP query path and browser-facing configuration first. If it fails as well, inspect the game-port forwarding, host firewall, provider rules, and whether the process is listening on the intended address and port.

Do not reuse the same UDP port for server.port and server.queryport. The Rust wiki explicitly requires separate ports, so correcting an accidental duplicate is a configuration fix rather than a player-side browser setting.

How to choose the next fix

Control area Who can change it What it affects Best evidence
Steam ping limit, branch, beta status, filters Player Which servers Steam and Rust query and display Changing the setting changes the list without changing the server.
VPN and IP geolocation Player or network administrator Regional discovery and route to servers The list changes when the VPN is disconnected.
Antivirus, firewall, router/NAT Player or network administrator Steam connections and A2S query packets The browser or direct connection works after a controlled security or routing change.
server.port Server owner or host Player’s game connection Direct connection fails when the game port is blocked.
server.queryport Server owner or host Browser visibility Direct connection works but the server is missing from listings.
EAC launch mode Player Whether secure servers can be used and displayed Launching through Steam restores the EAC-enabled session.

When to stop changing your PC

If the normal branch is current, filters are clear, Show Empty is enabled, the VPN is disconnected, Steam’s ping limit is 5000 or higher, and a router or security restart changes nothing, the remaining explanation may be outside your computer. Facepunch notes that packet loss, geographic positioning, and server-side outages or attacks can affect discovery. A server owner may also have an inaccessible query port even while the game process is running.

At that point, use a known endpoint for a direct-connect test and compare more than one server. A direct connection to one server establishes that your client and route can work; it does not prove that every server is healthy. For an owned server, verify both UDP ports with the host, router, and provider rules rather than repeatedly reinstalling the player’s game.

Bottom line

Most empty Rust lists are resolved by correcting Steam’s discovery setting, using the regular Rust branch, removing filters, enabling Show Empty, leaving beta branches, testing without a VPN, and restarting Steam after network or firewall changes. Direct connection separates browser discovery from basic reachability. If you run the server, make sure distinct UDP game and query ports are open through the host firewall, NAT, and provider security rules. Finally, use the ordinary EAC-enabled Steam launch whenever you need secure Official or community servers.
