The right Rust map size is the one that gives your expected players enough land to build and explore without making encounters too rare or server resources too expensive. For a modest, active community, start by testing a lower-middle world size such as 3,000 or 4,000. Choose 5,000 or larger when population, long wipes, or exploration are central to the server. These are starting points—not official capacity limits—so validate the seed, plugins, and target population in a representative benchmark.

What “3k,” “4k” and “5k” mean in Rust

Rust’s procedural world size is a numeric server setting. Facepunch documents valid procedural values from 1,000 to 6,000. A size is generated together with a seed and the map type, so “4k” normally means a procedural world configured with server.worldsize 4000, not a promise that every 4k world has the same terrain or monument arrangement.

The generation inputs are:

  • Map type: Procedural Map.
  • World size: an integer from 1,000 through 6,000.
  • Seed: an integer from 0 through 2,147,483,647.

Rust saves the generated result as a .map file. The filename includes the map type, size and seed, which helps administrators identify the world they are running. Changing either the size or seed produces a different generated map and should be treated as a new world for wipe planning.

World size is not a player-slot setting. You set the maximum player count separately, and the same numeric map size can feel empty at one population and crowded at another. Facepunch’s server documentation also separates the resource effects: larger maps require more disk space and memory, while higher concurrent populations increase CPU demand.

Quick recommendations by server style

Small, concentrated communities

For a server built around frequent encounters, short trips and a modest concurrent population, test a lower-middle size first. A 3k or 4k configuration usually creates a more concentrated play area than a 5k or 6k world. Before committing, inspect the generated seed for sufficient monument variety, coastline access and practical building room. A small map with an awkward seed can be less enjoyable than a slightly larger map with better coverage.

Large or exploration-oriented servers

Use a larger setting when your population, wipe duration or design goal justifies more land. More space supports remote bases, longer routes and less competition for individual building locations, but those benefits come with greater storage and memory requirements. As concurrent players rise, monitor CPU as well; map size does not create the entire CPU load, but a busy server with many players, entities and plugins can become CPU-bound.

Event, role-play or tightly designed communities

If the experience depends on a specific terrain, monument sequence or travel route, a custom map may be more appropriate than trying many procedural seeds. Custom maps require a different configuration path described below and add a distribution dependency: every player who joins must be able to download the file.

3k vs. 4k vs. 5k: practical comparison

The table describes gameplay tendencies, not an official performance guarantee. “3k,” “4k” and “5k” are shorthand for the corresponding procedural world-size values.

World size Typical gameplay tendency Advantages Costs and risks Best starting use
3,000 High player density and shorter travel routes when the population is concentrated in the same regions. Frequent contact, faster return trips and a lively feel with a smaller concurrent population. Less room for remote bases and large groups; poor monument distribution or a cramped seed is felt quickly. Small communities, wipe events and servers that prioritize interaction over remote exploration.
4,000 A middle ground between concentrated encounters and meaningful travel. More building and resource room than a very small world while retaining a relatively active encounter rate. Still needs seed inspection; a low population can make parts of the map feel unused. General-purpose communities testing their first persistent map size.
5,000 More separation between bases and longer logistics routes. Supports larger populations, longer wipes and exploration-focused play. Higher disk and memory needs; sparse populations may perceive the world as empty. Established servers with enough concurrent players or a deliberate exploration emphasis.

Values above 5,000 can be valid—Facepunch documents up to 6,000—but they should be justified by a tested population and a clear reason to add land. Increasing the number simply because it is available can reduce encounter frequency without improving the experience for your actual players.

How map size changes the player experience

Encounter frequency

A smaller playable area generally brings players into the same roads, monuments and resource regions more often. Facepunch described 4 km² maps as engaging and reported that official testing found higher encounter frequency on smaller maps. The studio later changed an old 16 km² default to 9 km² while keeping server owners in control of the setting. Those historical observations explain why a compact map can feel more active, but they are not a formula that predicts your server’s exact fights per hour.

Travel and logistics

Larger areas create longer routes between a base, monuments, launch points and other players. That is a gameplay inference from having more land, not a published travel-time table. Long routes can make scouting and vehicle use meaningful; they can also make a low-population server feel disconnected. Consider how often your players are online at the same time, not only how many slots you advertise.

Building room and remote bases

Additional land gives clans more options for base placement and lets solo players avoid immediate neighbors. The trade-off is that the population may spread out faster than new players can discover one another. Check the generated seed rather than assuming every map of the same size has equal buildable terrain or monument spacing.

Monument coverage

Procedural generation is seed-driven. Two worlds with the same size can have different coastlines, terrain and monument layouts. The official documentation establishes the size-and-seed inputs but does not guarantee a fixed monument count or identical coverage for every seed. Preview several candidate seeds and record why the chosen one works for your wipe.

Performance, RAM and storage: what is known and what to measure

Facepunch states plainly that “The larger the map, the more disk space and memory you need.” That relationship is reliable enough to include in capacity planning, but the cited official material does not publish a current RAM-per-world-size table. Do not promise that a particular amount of RAM is sufficient for every 3k, 4k or 5k server.

CPU pressure is tied especially to concurrent players and the activity they create. Entity counts, bases, automation, combat, plugins and administrative tools can change the result substantially. A quiet 5k server may use less CPU than a heavily populated 3k server while still requiring more storage or memory for the world.

A useful benchmark plan

  1. Generate the exact seed and world size you intend to wipe with.
  2. Install the same plugins, configuration files and server extensions planned for production.
  3. Run a load period that resembles your peak concurrent population rather than testing only an empty server.
  4. Record memory consumption, CPU utilization, tick or frame-time indicators, disk usage and save times during ordinary play and during the busiest simulated period.
  5. Repeat with a second plausible seed if your decision depends on monument density or buildable space.
  6. Leave operating-system and update headroom instead of sizing the machine to the highest observed number.

This process produces a number relevant to your edition, plugins and wipe length. It is more defensible than copying a generic “players per gigabyte” chart that Facepunch has not published.

Choose by player density, not by a magic capacity number

There is no universal official formula that maps world size to a guaranteed player capacity. Think in terms of density: how many people are active simultaneously, how long the wipe lasts, how many groups compete for monuments and how much empty travel your community enjoys.

  • A world that feels empty at 50 concurrent players may feel crowded at 200 without changing its numeric size.
  • Team limits and group behavior can concentrate players more than the slot count suggests.
  • A weekly wipe may need less long-term land than a month-long wipe because bases and resource routes accumulate over time.
  • New-player retention can suffer if the map is so large that beginners rarely see other players or reach important monuments.

Use your historical peak, not your advertised maximum, as the first planning number. If a server has 100 slots but usually peaks at 25, selecting a very large map for the unused slots can create a quiet world and unnecessary resource overhead.

+server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 4000 +server.maxplayers 10

The numbers in that example are illustrative, not universal recommendations. Replace them with the seed, size and player cap you have selected.

  1. Set the level to Procedural Map.
  2. Choose a seed within the documented 0–2,147,483,647 range.
  3. Set server.worldsize to a value from 1,000 through 6,000.
  4. Set server.maxplayers independently according to your intended population and benchmark.
  5. Start the server and wait for generation to complete; the resulting .map file identifies the map inputs.
  6. Preview the world, verify monument and building-space requirements, then announce the seed and size so players know what to expect.

Changing the seed or size after players have established bases is effectively a map change. Schedule it with the wipe, back up configuration and communicate the new values before the restart.

When a custom map is the better choice

Procedural generation is flexible, but it cannot guarantee a particular authored layout. Choose a custom map when the server’s identity depends on curated terrain, a planned monument arrangement or a scenario that procedural generation cannot reliably reproduce.

  1. Obtain the custom .map file and place it on a host that provides a public direct download.
  2. Set server.levelurl to that file’s direct URL.
  3. Remove the procedural server.worldsize and server.seed parameters; they are not the controls for a level delivered through server.levelurl.
  4. Keep the URL continuously reachable. New players and players returning after deleting local files must be able to download the map.
  5. Test a clean client connection, not only an administrator’s machine that may already have the file cached.

A custom map shifts the operational risk from seed selection to file delivery. Expired links, access controls, rate limits or a host that serves an HTML page instead of the raw file can prevent players from joining even when the server itself is healthy.

Pre-wipe checklist

  • Confirm the selected world size is within 1,000–6,000 for a procedural map.
  • Record the seed and map type in the wipe announcement and server configuration backup.
  • Preview monuments, coastlines, roads and usable building areas on the actual generated seed.
  • Compare expected peak concurrency with the density your community wants, rather than using slot count alone.
  • Benchmark with production plugins and a representative player load.
  • Check free disk space for world files, saves, backups and logs.
  • Monitor memory after generation and during peak activity; do not rely on an unofficial fixed RAM table.
  • Watch CPU, save duration and responsiveness as concurrent players increase.
  • For a custom map, verify that server.levelurl is a direct, continuously available download and that procedural parameters have been removed.
  • Document rollback steps before the wipe so you can restore the previous map if generation or distribution fails.

Common mistakes and fixes

“The map is huge but the server feels empty”

Usually the population is too low for the selected area. Test a smaller size at the same peak concurrency, or create reasons for players to meet through event scheduling and monument selection rather than raising the slot cap alone.

“Players cannot find enough building space”

Inspect the actual seed. Size by itself does not guarantee a favorable coastline, terrain mix or monument distribution. Generate alternative seeds at the same size before abandoning the size category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Generation or saves consume more resources than expected”

Measure storage and memory during generation and normal operation, then include plugin and population load in the comparison. A generic RAM claim cannot account for your configuration.

“A custom-map server reports download or connection errors”

Test the URL outside the game, confirm it returns the raw .map file without authentication, and verify it remains online for new players. Remove conflicting procedural settings and test with a clean client cache.

Bottom line

Start at 3k or 4k when your priority is an active, concentrated community; move to 5k or larger when your population and wipe design can use the extra land. Treat those values as hypotheses to benchmark, not capacity guarantees. Validate the seed for monuments and building room, size the machine from measured memory, disk and CPU behavior, and use server.levelurl only when a continuously available custom-map download is worth the added operational responsibility.
