Write Rust drivers against reviewed subsystem abstractions, not directly against generated C bindings. The abstraction author must make the API’s safety contract explicit; the driver author must use it according to that contract. That division keeps low-level unsafe code reviewable while giving drivers an idiomatic interface for resources, errors, and lifetimes.
How Rust drivers should relate to Linux C APIs
Linux Rust code is no_std: it uses Rust’s core library rather than Rust std. The kernel’s bindgen step generates declarations for selected C headers, but those declarations are low-level access to C functionality, not a ready-made safe driver API.
The intended path is for subsystem code to wrap relevant C APIs in Rust abstractions, then for drivers and other leaf users to use those abstractions. As the Linux kernel’s Rust General Information documentation puts it: “The main idea is to encapsulate all direct interaction with the kernel’s C APIs into carefully reviewed and documented abstractions.” The documentation advises that leaf modules, including drivers, should not use C bindings directly; subsystem abstractions should be as safe as possible.

|---|---|---|
| Call a generated binding directly | The caller must account for the binding’s unsafe preconditions and C API behavior at each use. | Low-level access, without an abstraction necessarily enforcing resource lifetime or converting errors into Rust types. |
| Use a subsystem abstraction | The abstraction author encapsulates and documents unsafe interaction; the driver must follow the API’s documented obligations. | A Rust-facing API designed to manage resource lifetimes and expose idiomatic behavior where the subsystem supports it. |
For example, the kernel’s Rust Mutex abstraction wraps the C struct mutex API. Other useful abstraction patterns include pairing resource acquisition with release through constructors and destructors, and converting C integer error codes into Rust Result values. Abstraction coverage is not complete, so a driver may encounter an API that has not yet been wrapped.

When a C helper is appropriate
If bindgen cannot generate a particular C inline function or non-trivial macro, the kernel documentation allows a small helper wrapper in rust/helpers/. This is a way to bridge a binding limitation; it does not change the design goal of keeping direct C interaction behind subsystem abstractions rather than spreading it through drivers.
What makes an abstraction sound?
Rust syntax alone does not make an abstraction safe. The kernel’s documented safety model depends on two things: abstractions are sound, and unsafe blocks and unsafe trait implementations obey their required safety contracts. If either condition fails, users may be able to cause undefined behavior despite using Rust code that appears safe.
Rank #2
An abstraction author therefore needs to establish that safe callers cannot violate the underlying C API’s requirements. That includes considering the relevant pointer validity, object lifetime, synchronization, ownership, and cleanup rules, as applicable to the API being wrapped. These are design questions to resolve for each abstraction, not assumptions supplied by the Rust type system automatically.

What a // SAFETY: comment must explain
Place a // SAFETY: comment immediately before every unsafe block. It should explain why that particular operation cannot trigger undefined behavior and how the operation’s preconditions are met. A statement such as “this is safe” does not give reviewers the reasoning they need.
- Identify the relevant unsafe operation and its preconditions.
- State which invariant, ownership rule, lifetime guarantee, or synchronization condition satisfies each applicable precondition.
- Explain how that condition is maintained for this use, rather than relying on an unstated assumption about the caller or surrounding code.
For an unsafe function or unsafe trait, document caller or implementor obligations in a rustdoc # Safety section. That section describes what users of the API must guarantee. The inline // SAFETY: comment has a different job: it records why the implementation satisfies the relevant requirements at a particular unsafe operation. One does not replace the other.
Prepare a kernel tree and verify its toolchain
Rust requirements vary with the checked-out kernel tree. Start with that tree’s Quick Start rather than assuming a version or copying package instructions from a different release. The Rust Quick Start provides the requirements and commands for checking availability.
Rank #4
- Check requirements: from the kernel source tree, run
make LLVM=1 rustavailable. It follows the availability logic used by Kconfig and explains unmet requirements. - Match tools to the tree: the build needs a suitable Rust compiler, Rust standard-library source (
rust-src, because the kernel build cross-compilescore), LLVM’slibclangforbindgen, andbindgen. Exact suitable versions depend on the tree. - Choose compatible components: distribution packages, Rust toolchain installers, and prebuilt LLVM-plus-Rust toolchains mentioned in the guide are possible sources. Check that the needed compiler,
rust-src,bindgen, andlibclangcomponents match the target tree. - Enable Rust: once the requirements are met, enable
CONFIG_RUSTunder General setup. - Build with the supported setup: the guide describes a complete LLVM toolchain, selected with
make LLVM=1, as the best-supported setup. GCC can work for some configurations, but the guide characterizes it as very experimental.
Study the in-tree examples before writing a driver
Enable Rust sample modules under Kernel hacking → Sample kernel code → Rust samples. Then read the code in samples/rust/ alongside supporting abstractions under rust/. The samples show how driver-facing code uses kernel Rust APIs; the support code reveals where lower-level interaction with C is encapsulated.
Use examples as patterns, not as proof that every API or configuration is available in your target tree. Rust support and abstraction coverage change across kernel revisions, so consult the documentation and code checked out with the tree you intend to build.
Best Value
Document and format kernel Rust code
The Rust Coding Guidelines call for rustdoc Markdown. Begin documentation with a brief description of the item, document unsafe obligations under # Safety, and put useful usage examples under # Examples. Panics should be rare; a fallible approach, typically returning Result, is generally preferred.
Format Rust code with rustfmt and follow the kernel’s vertical import style to reduce conflicts during merges and rebases. Formatting does not check whether prose comments or documentation follow the kernel’s conventions, so review those separately.
Useful development helpers
The Quick Start distinguishes build requirements from development tools. The kernel guide documents these commands for additional tooling:
