Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Rust servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
To survive your first Rust wipe, choose a manageable server, finish Tutorial Island if it is available, build a small stone starter quickly, and repeat one safe local route instead of chasing the best loot. A wipe deletes a server’s accumulated progress on its own schedule, so your first objective is not to become fully geared. It is to create a reliable respawn, shelter, workbench, storage routine and recovery plan before other players—or your own mistakes—take your inventory.
What a Rust wipe means
A wipe resets player progress on a schedule selected by the server. Weekly, biweekly and monthly wipes are all possible, and the exact timing is configurable. “Wipe day” therefore does not mean the same thing on every server. Read the server’s rule or information page before joining and note both the cadence and the time at which the reset occurs.
A reset changes your priorities. Long-term projects may disappear soon, while an early shelter, known route and small reserve remain useful immediately. Treat the first wipe as a learning cycle: establish a repeatable routine, learn where danger comes from and leave yourself a way back after a death.
Choose a server you can actually play
The server choice determines how much pressure you face before you have learned the basics. A community beginner guide recommends a low-population first wipe. That is advice, not a universal rule, but fewer simultaneous players generally gives you more time to practice the early sequence. Pick the least demanding environment that still has the rules and activity you want.

| Decision | What to check | Why it matters on a first wipe |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe cadence | Weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule; exact reset time | Determines how long your base and learned route can remain relevant |
| Population | Whether the server is low, medium or highly populated during your normal play hours | Controls how often you meet competitors near resources and monuments |
| Rules and modifications | Server-specific rules, altered progression and any listed gameplay changes | Prevents you from assuming that every server behaves like the default experience |
| Time zone and activity | When players are normally online relative to your schedule | Affects the risk of travelling, returning home and using a monument |
Do not select a server solely because it is new or busy. A fresh reset can attract a rush of experienced players, while a busy server may make every early resource run contested. Your first successful wipe is the one on which you can complete the basic loop often enough to learn it.
Complete Tutorial Island before committing to a main server
Facepunch’s official Tutorial Island is designed as a first-half-hour introduction. It teaches movement, crafting, base building and upgrading, respawning, combat, resources, looting, cooking, furnaces, workbenches and vehicles. If it is available in your version of the game, complete it before treating a live server as your classroom.
Facepunch explains the design goal this way: “Our guiding principle when designing this sequence has been, if a player emulates exactly what they did on the Tutorial Island once they get into the main game, will they have a fighting chance?” That is a useful first-wipe standard. You do not need to master every system before joining; you need to understand the sequence well enough to reproduce it under pressure.
- Practice moving between gathering, crafting and placing objects without standing still in an exposed area.
- Confirm how respawning works and how you return to a chosen sleeping place.
- Build and upgrade a small structure rather than trying to memorize every building option.
- Try the basic combat, resource, cooking, furnace and workbench interactions the tutorial presents.
- Use the tutorial’s vehicle and looting demonstrations as orientation, not as a requirement to pursue vehicles immediately on a live server.
When you enter a main server, copy the order of operations you already practiced: gather, make essential tools, place a respawn point, build shelter, upgrade it and then expand your route.
Your first 15 minutes: secure a way back
The opening minutes are about reducing the cost of your first death. Do not travel deep into the map while carrying everything you have collected. Gather enough wood and stone for basic tools, a sleeping bag and a compact starter structure, then establish a return point before taking a long trip.

- Move away from the busiest starting area. Look for a place where you can gather and return without crossing a high-traffic landmark.
- Collect the first tool-making resources. Stop when you have enough for the immediate build rather than filling your inventory with materials you cannot yet protect.
- Place a sleeping bag. This gives you a local respawn option before you begin exploring. Put it where you can reach your starter without an unnecessarily dangerous run.
- Lay out a compact starter. A 2×1 starter is the commonly recommended first footprint because it is small enough to finish quickly and large enough to hold basic storage and a work area.
- Choose a nearby, manageable landmark. Keep the first route short and recognizable. Your goal is to learn the return path, not to claim the richest location on the map.
The map opens with G by default. Use it to orient the base, nearby resources, a monument and the path between them. Monuments are large, build-protected locations that contain loot and player activity; they are useful landmarks as well as potential hazards.

Add a second sleeping bag as soon as your resources allow. Separate respawn options reduce the chance that one poorly chosen death leaves you with a long, exposed walk back. Keep the bags in sensible places and remember which one is closest to the task you are about to attempt.
Build the starter before you roam
Your first base should be compact, defensible enough for the current stage and positioned for repeated returns. The community recommendation is to upgrade a 2×1 starter to stone before roaming far. This is a recommendation rather than a server rule, but it addresses the first wipe’s biggest failure mode: spending a long trip’s worth of time outside an unfinished shelter and losing all of it in one encounter.
Location criteria
- Resources: Wood and stone should be reachable without a long detour.
- One reasonable monument: Pick a nearby location you can learn gradually, not the most contested landmark.
- Visibility: Avoid placing the starter directly beside an obvious high-traffic destination.
- Escape routes: Leave yourself more than one practical way to return or disengage.
- Return time: A short loop lets you deposit materials frequently and limits what one death can erase.
Minimum security sequence
- Finish the compact shell and upgrade it to stone.
- Place a Tool Cupboard so the base has its core building authorization.
- Install and secure the doors.
- Put storage inside before beginning a distant resource run.
- Keep enough building material inside to repair or replace basic parts after a setback.
Do not delay the stone upgrade in order to make the starter larger. Expansion is easier after you have a safe place to respawn, deposit items and craft the next requirement.
The first hour: establish a repeatable loop
Once the starter is stone and secured, spend the rest of the first hour making the same short trip several times. A useful loop is:

base → resource route → one monument → base.
Return home whenever you have enough materials or loot to justify a deposit. Carry only what the next task requires. If you are gathering for a building upgrade, do not also carry every tool, weapon and food item you own. Rust rewards repeated low-risk runs more reliably than one overloaded expedition.
Set up Workbench Level 1
Establish Workbench Level 1 inside the starter during this first phase. The official item description says it enables crafting and unlocking items that require that tier. It is therefore a progression gate, not merely another object to place.
Use it to support the immediate needs of the base and route: basic building pieces, storage, practical weapons and medical supplies. Avoid spending your early materials on advanced gear before the shelter, respawn points and recovery stock are in place.
Deposit by category
Keep separate storage for the capabilities you need to restart. One container can hold building materials, another tools, another food and healing items, and another weapons or exploration loot. The exact arrangement is up to you; the important principle is redundancy. A death, raid or bad trip should not remove every tool, every healing item and every piece of building material at once.
Record what the route teaches you
After each run, note which section was exposed, where you encountered players and which approach made the return easiest. The route becomes safer through repetition, not through a single successful haul. Change one variable at a time—departure direction, monument entrance or deposit point—so you can tell what actually improved the run.

Use monuments as a progression ladder
Monuments are not a binary choice between “go” and “never go.” Treat them as a ladder. Start with a nearby, lower-risk location, learn one route through it and repeat that route until the movement, exits and return path feel familiar. Only then add a second nearby location or attempt a more contested one.
| Stage | Route choice | Success condition |
|---|---|---|
| Orientation | Nearest manageable monument and a short return path | You can reach it, collect something useful and get home without carrying your entire reserve |
| Repetition | The same monument approached by the same practical route | You recognize danger points and know where to retreat or leave |
| Expansion | A second nearby location | The first route remains reliable while you add another source of loot or resources |
| Contest | Higher-value or more heavily contested monument | You can afford the risk because spare tools, healing, food and building supplies remain at home |
Before entering, decide what you are trying to obtain and when you will turn around. A small successful deposit is better than staying for one more container and losing the whole run. If another player arrives, disengaging is a valid progression decision; you can return after restocking.
Workbench tiers and blueprints: spend progress deliberately
Workbench Level 1 gates the recipes assigned to its tier. Blueprints are the system used to learn item crafting. Together, these systems determine whether finding an item actually turns into a repeatable capability.

Learn items in practical order
- Base essentials: Prioritize the building and storage items that keep the starter functional.
- Tools: Learn the tools that make your regular resource route faster or safer.
- Basic weapons: Choose equipment you can reasonably replace rather than chasing the strongest option immediately.
- Medical supplies: Keep healing capability available before taking longer or riskier routes.
- Later equipment: Move to advanced gear only after the earlier loop is stable and your storage has reserves.
Do not learn a blueprint simply because it is available. Ask whether it improves the next run, protects the base or gives you a realistic recovery option. A blueprint that cannot be supplied with your current resources is a lower priority than one that makes the next ten trips safer.

If you die away from home
Respawn at the sleeping bag that places you closest to the task, then recover only what is necessary. Replace basic tools and a small amount of building material before attempting the same route again. If the route is being watched, change the approach or postpone recovery; repeatedly feeding the same location is not progress.

Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
If the starter is unfinished
Stop exploring and finish the shelter. A partially built base provides less value than a completed compact one because your next death can erase both the materials and the time spent collecting them. Once it is stone, restart the local loop with smaller loads.
If you lose your only tools or food
Use the separate reserve storage you created for exactly this case. If no reserve exists, make the shortest possible gathering trip, return immediately and rebuild the minimum kit before visiting a monument. Do not attempt a long recovery run with an empty inventory and no fallback.

If another player controls your local monument
Move down the progression ladder temporarily. Gather resources, improve the base or practice the route’s safer edges, then check again later. Your first wipe is not won by contesting every encounter; it is won by preserving enough capability to make another attempt.
Common first-wipe mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | What it causes | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| Joining without checking the wipe schedule | You misjudge how long progress will last or arrive during an unexpected reset | Read the server information page and record the cadence and reset time |
| Building beside a high-traffic landmark | Frequent encounters and an obvious return path expose the starter | Use a nearby but less conspicuous position with multiple exits |
| Roaming before placing a sleeping bag | A death sends you back farther than necessary | Place one before a long trip and a second when resources allow |
| Keeping everything in one container | One death or raid removes every recovery option | Separate tools, food, healing, building materials and exploration items |
| Skipping the stone upgrade | The base remains a fragile collection point while you take bigger risks | Upgrade the compact starter before expanding your travel radius |
| Chasing the richest monument first | A single failed trip consumes all early progress | Learn one manageable route, then add risk gradually |
| Carrying more than the task needs | A death has a larger cost and makes every decision feel urgent | Take only the next run’s tools, supplies and expected capacity |
| Learning random blueprints | Limited progression is spent on items you cannot use yet | Prioritize base, storage, tools, practical weapons and medical supplies |
A practical first-wipe checklist
Before joining
- Check the server’s wipe cadence, reset time, rules and modifications.
- Prefer a low-population environment for your first learning cycle if one suits your play hours.
- Complete Tutorial Island when available.
During the opening minutes
- Gather only the resources needed for basic tools, a sleeping bag and a compact starter.
- Place a sleeping bag before travelling far.
- Use the map to select a nearby monument and a return route.
By the end of the first hour
- Upgrade the starter to stone.
- Place the Tool Cupboard, secure doors and establish storage.
- Add a second sleeping bag if resources permit.
- Set up Workbench Level 1.
- Complete several base-to-resource-to-monument-to-base loops.
- Deposit frequently and keep recovery supplies separated.
Before increasing risk
- Confirm that one local monument route is repeatable.
- Keep spare tools, food, healing and building material at home.
- Learn blueprints that support the next task rather than an aspirational loadout.
- Attempt a more contested monument only when a failed trip will not end your ability to play.
How to judge whether your first wipe is going well
Measure progress by reliability, not by the rarity of the item in your inventory. You are on track when you can respawn locally, rebuild a basic kit, return to the starter, use Workbench Level 1 and complete a known monument route without risking every reserve. A modest stone base with organized storage is a stronger foundation than a spectacular haul that leaves you unable to recover after one death.
The wipe will eventually reset according to the server’s schedule. That reset does not invalidate the skills you gained: choosing a server, placing a sleeping bag early, building a 2×1 starter, reading the map, selecting a manageable monument and turning loot into repeatable blueprints. Those decisions are the transferable advantage that makes the next wipe less chaotic.
