The Russell Hobbs Colour Control 19840AU is a discontinued steam iron whose clearest distinguishing feature is a colour-coded temperature indicator. Its 2013 manual documents dry and steam ironing, spray mist, steam shot, vertical steaming, self-cleaning and automatic shut-off. Published specifications include 2400 W power and a 3.3 m cord, but the accessible evidence does not establish a current price or an independent performance verdict. Check the exact model, condition and warranty before buying.
What the Colour Control 19840AU does
This is a steam iron, not a kettle. Russell Hobbs’ manufacturer manual for model 19840AU describes dry ironing, steam ironing, spray mist, a steam shot, vertical steaming and a self-cleaning function. The manual requires the iron to reach the steam temperature setting or higher before using steam; wait for the thermostat light to glow steadily.
The manual is an operating guide, not an independent performance test. CHOICE has a listing for the exact model, but the public text available does not disclose its expert rating, performance or ease scores, detailed pros and cons, or reliability and satisfaction fields. It would be misleading to turn the listed specifications into a claim that the iron irons especially well.

The light indicates a temperature category rather than a precise soleplate temperature. The 19840AU manual maps its colours to the familiar garment-care dot system:

Use the garment’s care label if it conflicts with the iron’s guide. The manual also advises starting with lower-temperature fabrics and moving to higher-temperature fabrics. When lowering the temperature, allow the soleplate time to cool before switching from a hot fabric to a delicate one.
Safety shut-off and resuming ironing
The manufacturer manual says the iron switches itself off after 30 seconds without movement when the soleplate is down or the iron is on its side, and after 8 minutes when it is upright. These are automatic shut-off intervals, not a substitute for unplugging the iron after use.

To resume, the manual directs the user to move the iron. The indicator light comes on as the iron heats; the manual says it returns to operating temperature in about 25–45 seconds after lifting and resetting. Wait for the thermostat light to glow steadily before ironing or using steam.

CHOICE and Appliances Online list 2400 W stated power, a ceramic soleplate and a 3.3 m cord for the 19840AU. CHOICE also lists the iron at 1.4 kg. These are published specifications, not comparative test results.

Appliances Online’s listing gives water capacity as 0.35 L in its specifications and 300 ml in its feature list. Since those figures do not match exactly, the available listing does not establish a single precise capacity. The same retailer page includes a current purchase area showing another product; that price is not evidence of the 19840AU’s price or availability.
Cleaning, water and storage
The manual recommends self-cleaning at least monthly in areas with normal water and more often in hard-water areas. Its procedure uses a basin to catch the water. It warns against using descaling solution because it can destroy the iron’s incorporated anti-scale agent.

- Fill the unplugged iron slowly and do not exceed the tank’s maximum mark.
- In hard-water areas, the manual says distilled water suitable for irons may be used.
- After use, empty the water, unplug the iron and let it cool fully.
- Store it on its heel to help avoid soleplate damage or corrosion.
Is the 19840AU discontinued, and is it worth buying?
CHOICE and ProductReview both describe the exact model as discontinued. That does not prove that every remaining listing is unavailable, but it does mean buyers should verify that a listing is genuinely for model 19840AU and check whether it is new, used or refurbished, who is selling it, and what warranty applies. CHOICE displays $70 on its page, but its listing does not establish that as a current market price. Do not treat a price shown beside another product on a retailer page as the iron’s price.

The documented feature set may suit someone specifically seeking colour-coded temperature guidance and basic steam functions, but the public evidence here does not establish how its ironing performance compares with current alternatives. A discontinued model makes the practical decision hinge on the exact unit’s condition, price and warranty as well as whether it meets your needs.
