When the rupee weakens, Indian companies with more foreign-currency revenue than foreign-currency costs can benefit, while businesses that import fuel, components, equipment or finished goods can face margin pressure. That rule is only a starting point. Hedging, contract currency, pricing power, demand, debt and the amount of imported content determine each company’s net exposure. There is no reliable current ranking that identifies one Indian stock sector as the automatic winner whenever the rupee falls.
The practical answer is to compare a company’s net foreign-currency position and disclosures, rather than buying a sector solely because it is labelled an exporter.
What rupee depreciation means for an Indian company
Rupee depreciation means one unit of foreign currency buys more rupees. For example, if a US-dollar invoice rises from ₹83 to ₹85 per dollar, a dollar of revenue converts into ₹2 more before considering hedges, taxes, costs or changes in the selling price.

The same arithmetic works against an importer. A dollar-denominated raw-material bill, fuel purchase, lease payment or loan repayment requires more rupees. A company’s result therefore depends on the difference between its foreign-currency receipts and payments, not on its industry label alone.

Exchange-rate measures can also tell different stories. The Reserve Bank of India reported in its Annual Report 2023–24: “The 40-currency nominal effective exchange rate (NEER) depreciated (y-o-y) by 0.6 per cent, while real effective exchange rate (REER) appreciated (y-o-y) by 0.9 per cent during 2023-24.” NEER is a trade-weighted nominal measure; REER adjusts for relative inflation. A nominal fall is therefore not proof that Indian exporters became more competitive in real terms.
How a weaker rupee reaches earnings
Foreign-currency sales
Export receipts can translate into more rupees when the invoice currency is unchanged. The benefit is largest when salaries, utilities, local suppliers and other operating costs are paid in rupees. It can appear in revenue, operating profit and cash flow, but accounting translation and cash conversion depend on the company’s contracts and hedge book.
Imported inputs and finished products
A manufacturer that buys dollar-priced chemicals, electronics, metals or machinery sees its rupee cost rise unless it has fixed prices, inventory cover, a natural hedge or a derivative hedge. A retailer or distributor that imports finished goods faces a similar issue. If customers resist price increases, the higher cost reduces gross margin.
Pricing and demand
An exporter may respond to depreciation by cutting its foreign-currency price, retaining the difference as market-share support, or keeping its price and taking a larger rupee margin. Competitors may also change prices. The final volume and margin effect depends on foreign demand, substitution and contract repricing. RBI analysis identifies import penetration, pricing behaviour, domestic demand, the persistence of the currency move and price elasticity as important pass-through factors; oil and gold demand can be relatively inelastic. Foreign-currency debt
When a company has an unhedged dollar, euro or yen loan, both principal and interest require more rupees after depreciation. A borrower with foreign-currency revenue may have a natural hedge, but the timing and currency of receipts must match the debt service. A hedge can reduce or reshape exposure; it does not guarantee that a loss cannot occur.

Export-oriented sectors: possible beneficiaries, not guaranteed winners
Information technology and business services
IT and business-process companies often bill overseas customers in dollars, euros or pounds while a substantial share of delivery payroll is in rupees. A weaker rupee can therefore lift reported rupee revenue and, in some circumstances, operating margin. The effect is smaller when staff work onsite abroad, subcontractors are paid in foreign currency, or the company has sold forward a large portion of receipts. Long contracts may also delay repricing.
Read the revenue-by-geography and currency notes, employee-cost location, onsite mix, hedge maturity and sensitivity disclosures together. A quarterly currency gain can reverse when the hedge book rolls off or the rupee strengthens.

Drug exporters can receive a conversion benefit, but imported active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates, packaging and research costs can rise at the same time. Regulatory changes, product concentration and customer pricing often matter more than a small currency movement. RBI data for 2023–24 show drugs and pharmaceuticals exports grew 9.7% and represented 6.4% of merchandise exports. Those are trade outcomes, not an estimate of how much depreciation caused sector profits.
Engineering goods and manufactured exports
Engineering exporters may gain a price advantage or higher rupee receipts when contracts are in foreign currency. However, imported steel, electronics, energy, machinery and components reduce the net benefit. Customer contracts can contain escalation clauses, and global industrial demand may overwhelm any exchange-rate advantage. RBI reported engineering-goods exports grew 2.1% in 2023–24, while also describing broad weakness across merchandise exports and declines in several product groups.
Textiles, garments and other labour-intensive goods
Labour-intensive exporters can have a favourable currency profile when wages and local overheads are paid in rupees. The gain is not automatic: cotton, synthetic fibre, dyes, machinery, freight and imported accessories may be foreign-currency costs. Buyers can demand lower prices, and weak overseas orders can eliminate the benefit.

Gems and jewellery
Gems and jewellery illustrate why “exporter” is an incomplete description. An Economic Times report archived in NSE materials cited almost 90% import content for the sector during the April–October FY24 export period. At that reported level, costlier imported stones and metals can offset much of the extra rupee value of export receipts. Treat the figure as that report’s dated estimate, not as a universal current ratio for every jeweller.

Import-sensitive sectors: where depreciation can hurt
Oil, aviation and transport
Crude oil and many refined products are priced in US dollars. A weaker rupee raises the rupee cost of fuel for refiners, airlines, shipping companies, road transport and other users. The impact on profit depends on taxes, regulated pricing, fuel surcharges, ticket or freight pricing and hedges. An airline may be unable to pass a sudden cost increase through fares when demand is weak.
Consumer companies and import-dependent manufacturers
Electronics, appliances, telecom equipment, specialty chemicals and other imported inputs can become more expensive. Companies with local substitutes, strong brands or frequent price revisions may protect margins; those selling in fixed-price channels may absorb the increase. Inventory purchased before depreciation can briefly cushion reported costs, while later replenishment reveals the full effect.
Capital-goods users and infrastructure borrowers
Imported machinery and project equipment cost more in rupees. Companies with foreign-currency leases or construction loans can also record translation losses. Check whether the asset is essential, whether the contract allows escalation and whether project revenue is linked to the same currency.
Why stock prices do not follow the accounting arithmetic
A stock price reflects expectations, not just the next quarter’s translation gain. Investors may already anticipate depreciation, while global demand, oil prices, inflation, interest rates, capital flows and risk appetite move at the same time. A company can report a currency benefit yet fall because orders, margins or guidance deteriorate. Conversely, an importer’s shares may rise if management has hedged costs or investors expect a price increase.

Trade data cannot establish a sector’s stock-return effect. RBI’s Annual Report 2022–23 recorded merchandise exports of US$450.4 billion, up 6.7%, and imports of US$714.0 billion, up 16.5%. The differing growth rates describe trade performance; they do not isolate the causal contribution of exchange rates or predict equity returns.
A step-by-step way to analyse an Indian stock’s currency exposure
- Map revenue currencies. Use the annual report and quarterly filing to record sales by geography, invoice currency and settlement timing.
- Map foreign-currency costs. Include imported materials, fuel, freight, royalties, software licences, overseas payroll, leases and capital expenditure.
- Calculate the net position. Compare expected receipts and payments for the same period and currency. An exporter with large dollar costs may be close to neutral.
- Read the debt note. Record currency, principal, maturity, interest, covenants and any natural hedge from matching revenue.
- Read the derivative note. Identify forwards, options and swaps, the covered amount, maturity, strike or rate, accounting treatment and the portion left open.
- Test pass-through. Look for price clauses, recent price increases, customer concentration, competitive intensity and the lag between input inflation and selling prices.
- Stress more than one scenario. Ask what happens if the rupee falls 5%, if oil rises at the same time, if demand weakens, or if hedges expire before prices can be changed.
- Check management’s sensitivity. Compare the stated earnings effect of a one-percent currency move with the actual net exposure. If no sensitivity is disclosed, do not manufacture one from sector averages.
Questions to ask when comparing two companies
- Which has the larger net foreign-currency revenue after imported inputs and overseas expenses?
- Which has shorter contracts and greater ability to reprice?
- How much of the next 12 months’ exposure is hedged, and when do those hedges mature?
- Does either company have foreign-currency debt without a matching revenue stream?
- Are margins being supported by temporary inventory or hedge gains?
- Are the rupee move, oil prices, inflation and interest rates changing together?
- Does overseas demand support volumes, or is the company relying only on translation?
An NSE-hosted issuer filing warns that foreign-currency movements can affect competitiveness and reported results and that hedging may not be sufficient to prevent losses. Use that disclosure as a reminder to inspect each issuer’s own notes, not as evidence of a guaranteed outcome for any sector: issuer foreign-exchange risk filing.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The historical figures establish that exchange rates and export performance can move in complex ways. They do not provide a current sector-index ranking, a causal estimate of stock returns attributable to rupee depreciation, or up-to-date net foreign-exchange exposure for named companies. The 2023–24 export statistics and the dated gems-and-jewellery estimate should not be used as forecasts for 2026.
Use the RBI Annual Report 2008–09 and the RBI Bulletin discussion of India’s exchange-rate regime, “India’s Exchange Rate Regime Since March 1993”, for historical and institutional context. Neither source converts that context into a buy or sell signal.
Bottom line for investors
Start with net exposure: foreign-currency revenue minus foreign-currency costs, debt and commitments. Export-heavy IT, pharmaceutical, engineering and labour-intensive businesses may benefit when their costs remain mostly in rupees, while fuel users, import-intensive manufacturers, consumer businesses and unhedged foreign borrowers may suffer. High imported content, hedges, weak overseas demand or limited pricing power can reverse either result. A sector label is a screening tool; current company filings are the evidence needed for an investment decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Indian exporter benefit when the rupee falls?
No. Imported materials, overseas expenses, foreign-currency debt, hedges, contract pricing and weak customer demand can offset or exceed the conversion benefit.
Is a weaker rupee always good for IT stocks?
Not always. Dollar billing and rupee payroll can help, but onsite costs, subcontractors, hedge positions, contract terms and wage inflation determine the net effect.
Why can an importer’s stock rise during rupee depreciation?
Investors may expect successful price increases, effective hedges, stronger demand or another favourable development. Share prices reflect expectations and many variables, not currency arithmetic alone.
