Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want RuneScape lore, quests, skill leveling, spells, and a smaller co-op party of up to four. Choose Valheim if you prefer a procedurally generated Norse-inspired world, sailing, biome-based bosses, structural base building, and co-op for up to ten total players.
Both games are full 1.0 releases as of September 2026, so the decision is no longer about whether to buy into an unfinished project. It is about which survival loop, setting, group size, platform arrangement, and hardware profile better fit the way you play.

Skills, spells, and preparation
Jagex describes a progression system based on leveling skills, acquiring gear, preparing potions, and using magic as a practical survival tool. That combination matters if you enjoy improving a character through several parallel abilities instead of relying only on stronger weapons or armor. Your routine can include gathering resources, crafting, preparing for a fight, and deciding which skills or spells support the next objective.
A smaller cooperative group
Dragonwilds supports solo play or teams of up to four. That limit favors a regular small group in which each person can contribute to gathering, crafting, combat, or magical preparation without managing a large server population. Jagex says the game supports cross-play on all of its listed platforms, which is useful when a four-person group owns different supported systems.
What Valheim is built around
A procedural Norse-inspired world
Valheim places you in a procedurally generated Norse-inspired afterlife. The map’s structure, biome sequence, resource locations, and travel routes are generated rather than authored as one fixed Ashenfall region. Exploration includes sailing to new lands, identifying environmental threats, and preparing for the conditions of each biome.
Biome progression and Forsaken bosses
Progression is tied to materials, crafted equipment, and regional Forsaken bosses. A new biome can change which resources you need, what hazards you face, and which equipment or food preparation makes an expedition sensible. Boss encounters provide regional milestones, while the procedural map makes the route between those milestones different from one world to another.
Building, food, and survival systems
Iron Gate emphasizes detailed, customizable buildings with structural integrity and defensive possibilities. Structures are not merely cosmetic: how you support and arrange them affects what you can safely construct. Food grants health and stamina benefits, so meals become part of expedition planning and combat preparation rather than a simple hunger meter.
A larger co-op ceiling
Valheim supports solo play or up to nine other players, for ten total. Which game fits your priorities?
Choose Dragonwilds for RuneScape identity and directed goals
Dragonwilds is the natural choice if the following matter most:
- You already value RuneScape’s setting, creatures, terminology, or style of character progression.
- You want quests and a Dragon Queen narrative to give exploration a clear purpose.
- You like leveling skills and using spells alongside conventional gear.
- Your regular group is one to four players.
- You want an explicitly stated cross-play option across the game’s supported platforms.
- You prefer a hand-crafted region with authored content rather than a procedurally generated world.
Choose Valheim for open-ended world discovery
Valheim is the stronger match if these are your priorities:
- You want each new world to be shaped by procedural generation.
- Sailing and reaching new lands are central attractions, not optional travel between quest hubs.

- Building a large, structurally coherent base is a major reason you play survival games.

Use the part of the loop you expect to repeat most often as the tiebreaker. If you imagine logging in to follow a quest, improve a skill, prepare spells, and pursue RuneScape creatures, Dragonwilds aligns more closely with that routine. If you imagine surveying a new coastline, sailing for resources, expanding a defended settlement, cooking for better stamina, and planning a biome boss expedition, Valheim is the closer fit.

Multiplayer, party size, and cross-play
Dragonwilds: up to four with stated cross-play
Jagex describes Dragonwilds as playable solo or in teams of four. Its September 15, 2026 launch announcement says the PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S editions support cross-play across all platforms. A mixed-platform group should still confirm the current account and platform requirements before starting a shared world.
The Steam listing identifies single-player and online co-op and says Epic Online Services is a required third-party account service. That account requirement is separate from your store purchase, so factor it into setup if you plan to play online.

Valheim: up to ten total, with cross-play unconfirmed here
Iron Gate describes Valheim as playable alone or with up to nine other players. That ten-player ceiling gives a large group more room to specialize, but the official information used here does not establish cross-play. If your friends use different systems, check the current platform-specific multiplayer documentation before buying on the assumption that everyone can join the same server.
Platforms, editions, and access
Dragonwilds platforms and PC storefronts
Jagex’s September 15, 2026 launch announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, the game is listed through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Jagex Launcher.
Jagex Support warns that the Steam and Jagex Launcher versions are separate installs. Buying one version does not grant the other version, so select the storefront your group intends to use before purchasing. If you change launchers later, do not assume that an existing license transfers automatically.
Subscription catalog availability
Jagex said Dragonwilds was available at launch in specified Xbox Game Pass tiers and in PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium on PS5. Catalog access can vary by region, tier, and date; confirm the current listing in your own console store rather than treating the launch announcement as a permanent entitlement.
Valheim storefronts and device checks
Iron Gate’s official site lists links for Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Apple storefronts. Those links do not by themselves establish that every model or operating-system version is supported. Check the store page for the exact device you own, especially if you are comparing a console edition with the Windows, Mac, SteamOS, or Linux requirements.
Physical editions
Jagex announced that physical Standard and Deluxe editions of Dragonwilds for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S were planned for Q4 2026. That announcement does not prove that a listing is live, that every territory is served, or that a particular retailer has stock. The sources used here establish digital purchase listings for both games and do not establish a physical Valheim edition.

PC requirements: check your machine before buying
These are the published Windows requirements available on October 13, 2026. They are specifications from Jagex Support and Steam, not a comparative performance test. Requirements can change with updates, and meeting a minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate or graphics setting.

Steam also lists Mac and SteamOS/Linux requirements for Valheim. The cited Dragonwilds support page lists Windows specifications, so do not infer equivalent support for another desktop operating system.

The published storage figures are 25 GB for Dragonwilds and 1 GB for Valheim in the listed Windows requirements. They are installation requirements, not evidence that one game will perform better, load faster, or use less space after updates. Leave additional free space for patches, save data, and the operating system.

Both games are 1.0 releases
Jagex says Dragonwilds launched on September 15, 2026. Iron Gate records Valheim’s 1.0 launch on September 9, 2026. Treat both as released games rather than Early Access titles when comparing whether to buy.
Dragonwilds sales figure
Jagex reported more than one million Dragonwilds sales during Early Access in its June 5, 2026 launch-date announcement. That is a publisher-reported figure and is not presented as independently audited sales data.

Steam review snapshots
Steam listings accessed October 13, 2026 showed 25,577 English-language reviews for Dragonwilds, with 81% positive, and 265,917 English-language reviews for Valheim, with 94% positive. The same snapshot showed recent reviews at 76% positive from 4,021 reviews for Dragonwilds and 78% positive from 10,796 reviews for Valheim.

A practical decision process
- Choose your world type. Select Dragonwilds if a hand-crafted RuneScape region and authored quests appeal more than procedural discovery. Select Valheim if you want generated maps, sailing, and new routes between biomes.
- Count your regular players. A group of five to ten cannot all fit within Dragonwilds’ stated four-player limit. Valheim’s stated limit is ten total. A solo player can use either.
- Identify your progression hook. Choose Dragonwilds for skills, spells, potions, RuneScape creatures, and a Dragon Queen objective. Choose Valheim for materials, crafted equipment, food effects, biome preparation, and Forsaken bosses.
- Check platform compatibility. For Dragonwilds, confirm that everyone is using a supported PC or console edition and remember that Jagex states cross-play across its platforms. For Valheim, verify the exact device and do not assume cross-play without current documentation.
- Check the PC specification. Compare your processor, graphics card, RAM, DirectX version, and free storage with the appropriate table. Dragonwilds requires the larger listed installation footprint and DirectX 12; Valheim’s listed Windows requirements use DirectX 11 and 1 GB storage.
- Confirm how you will buy or access it. For Dragonwilds on PC, select Steam, Epic Games Store, or Jagex Launcher deliberately because Jagex says those versions are separate installs and purchases. For subscription access, check your region and current catalog tier at the time you subscribe.
- Set expectations correctly. Use official feature descriptions to choose a design fit, not to predict comparative frame rates, difficulty, building quality, or combat feel.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Assuming all PC storefront purchases are interchangeable
They are not. Jagex specifically says the Steam and Jagex Launcher versions are separate installs and that buying one does not grant the other. Decide which launcher your group will use before completing a purchase.
Counting Dragonwilds as a ten-player game
Its stated maximum is four players in a team, not four per platform or four at a time plus additional guests. If your planned group exceeds four, Valheim’s stated ten-player ceiling is the relevant comparison.
Assuming Valheim cross-play
The official information used for this comparison confirms Valheim storefront links and its ten-player description, but does not establish cross-play. Verify the current support page for the exact platforms in your group.
Reading minimum requirements as performance guarantees
A computer that meets a minimum specification may run a game, but the published tables do not promise a frame rate, resolution, quality preset, or stability level. Treat the requirements as a compatibility checkpoint and leave room for updates.
Treating store ratings as a laboratory comparison
Steam review percentages are changing user feedback, not a controlled test of identical hardware, playtime, or design goals. Use them as context alongside the documented differences in world structure, progression, multiplayer size, and platform support.
Final recommendation
Pick RuneScape: Dragonwilds for a RuneScape-centered survival adventure with hand-crafted Ashenfall, quests, skill leveling, spells, potions, gear preparation, and up to four-player cross-platform co-op. Pick Valheim for a procedural Norse-inspired world where sailing, biome hazards, structural building, food preparation, regional bosses, and up to ten total players define the loop.
Neither choice is an objective winner on the evidence available. The better purchase is the one whose setting, progression system, party size, platform arrangement, and hardware requirements match the way your group actually intends to play.
