rundll32.exe is a Windows utility that loads a DLL and runs a function designed to be called by Rundll32. “Other system tray icons” is wording used in Windows 11 taskbar settings; the available Microsoft sources do not establish that Rundll32 is itself a tray icon or that it appears in that section. If you are investigating a process on your PC, its name alone cannot tell you whether it is safe: you need its full command line and launch context.

What Rundll32 does

Microsoft describes rundll32 as a command for loading and running 32-bit dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). A DLL can expose a function for Rundll32 to call; Microsoft’s example, Rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry, displays the printer user interface. Microsoft says the utility has no configurable settings of its own and “can only call functions from a DLL explicitly written to be called by Rundll32.” Microsoft’s rundll32 command reference applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, among other listed Windows releases, and was last updated February 3, 2023.

What “Other system tray icons” means

“Other system tray icons” is wording used in a Windows 11 taskbar settings context for choosing which app icons appear in the notification area. A Microsoft Q&A discussion describes expanding that section and selecting icons to show; it does not connect Rundll32 with the setting or identify it as a tray icon. The settings label therefore does not, by itself, explain a rundll32.exe process you may see elsewhere in Windows. Microsoft Q&A: Show all icons in the notification area (Windows 11)

How to assess a Rundll32 process on your PC

Do not infer a verdict from the process name alone. Microsoft documents that a Rundll32 command names a DLL and an entry point, and that Rundll32 can be used in a RunOnce registry command. Those facts show why the full invocation and how it was launched matter; they do not establish whether a particular process is legitimate or malicious.

  1. Inspect the full command line. Identify the DLL and function or entry point named after rundll32.exe. Without those details, the process name does not reveal what is being called.
  2. Identify the file and its location. Check which executable is running. The cited Microsoft sources do not provide a complete file-validation procedure, so location alone should not be treated as a definitive safety verdict.
  3. Check the launch context. Look for a related Windows feature, app, scheduled task, or registry entry. Microsoft documents RunOnce as one possible source of Rundll32 commands, but does not classify every possible launch.
  4. Consider observed behavior. Note what initiated the process and what it is doing. The sources do not support a generic security conclusion based only on the process name.

Microsoft’s RunOnce documentation gives the command structure as Rundll32[.exe] DllName,EntryPoint[Arguments]. This explains what to look for in an invocation, not whether a particular command is safe. Microsoft Learn: RunOnce Registry Key

What the available information cannot establish

  • It does not show that Rundll32 is a tray icon or that an item named Rundll32 appears under “Other system tray icons.”
  • It does not identify the DLL, entry point, file identity, or purpose of a process on your computer.
  • It does not provide a security verdict for an individual process. That requires instance-specific evidence, especially the command line and launch context.
