Runaways season three draws on real scientific ideas, but its supernatural plot goes far beyond what those ideas show. A 2002 clinical report linked an out-of-body-like sensation to electrical stimulation of one patient’s brain; the Federal Trade Commission has documented manipulative digital design; and brane-world physics is a theoretical approach to extra dimensions. None of these establishes magical control, consciousness leaving the body, or a traversable Dark Dimension.
What the show gets right—and where the analogy stops
The science behind Morgan le Fay’s astral projection, her Corvus WizPhone, and the Dark Dimension is best understood as three different kinds of comparison. Neurology offers evidence that out-of-body-like experiences can have brain-related correlates. Consumer-protection research documents interface designs that can manipulate people’s choices. Brane-world physics explores mathematical models involving higher-dimensional space.
Those are meaningful points of contact with the fiction, not scientific confirmations of its magic. The distinction matters: a reported experience is not proof of a spirit leaving a body, an attention-grabbing interface is not evidence of mind control, and a model involving extra dimensions is not evidence that a separate realm exists.

|---|---|---|
| Morgan le Fay’s astral projection | Neurological reports describe out-of-body-like experiences and possible links to multisensory processing. | That consciousness literally travels outside the body, or that the fictional mechanism is possible. |
| The Corvus WizPhone | The FTC documents digital designs that can obscure or manipulate consumer choices. | That a phone can magically enthrall users, or that a particular interface necessarily causes addiction. |
| The Dark Dimension | Brane-world models consider our universe in a higher-dimensional setting. | That a Runaways-style parallel realm has been detected or can be entered. |
Why Morgan le Fay’s astral projection resembles a neurological experience
What the 2002 clinical report found
In a 2002 report in Nature, Olaf Blanke, Stéphanie Ortigue, Theodor Landis, and Margitta Seeck described a patient undergoing evaluation for epilepsy treatment who repeatedly experienced an out-of-body-like sensation during focal electrical stimulation of the brain’s right angular gyrus. The authors wrote: “Here we describe the repeated induction of this experience by focal electrical stimulation of the brain’s right angular gyrus in a patient who was undergoing evaluation for epilepsy treatment.”

The researchers proposed that the experience might reflect a failure to integrate complex somatosensory and vestibular information—that is, signals involved in sensing the body and its position or movement. The report is a single-patient clinical observation. It shows that stimulation in a particular clinical context coincided with an unusual bodily perspective; it does not show that the patient’s consciousness left the body.
What the broader neurological literature adds
A 2004 review by Blanke and colleagues describes out-of-body experiences as involving a sense of disembodiment and a perspective that seems to be located outside the body. It discusses the temporoparietal junction and multisensory processing as possible contributors, while noting that systematic neurological studies were rare. That makes it inappropriate to say that one brain region alone fully explains every such experience.

The useful comparison with Morgan le Fay is therefore limited but real: fiction dramatizes an experience of separation from the body, while clinical literature describes reported experiences with neurological correlates. The clinical findings do not verify astral travel or explain the show’s supernatural cause.

The show’s Corvus WizPhone is a fictional smartphone infused with magic that enthralls its users. Its resemblance to attention-capturing technology is an interpretation of the story. A more grounded comparison is to dark patterns: digital design practices that can obscure or manipulate consumers’ choices.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2022 staff report, Bringing Dark Patterns to Light, documents this kind of interface manipulation. That makes dark patterns a real design and consumer-protection issue, but it does not turn the phone’s magical control into a clinical account of how people use technology.
Keep manipulation, attention, and addiction distinct
An interface that steers a choice is not the same thing as supernatural compulsion. Nor does the existence of manipulative design prove that a particular design necessarily causes addiction or that one brain mechanism explains all heavy smartphone use. The FTC report supports the narrower point: digital interfaces can be designed in ways that make choices less clear or more difficult to exercise freely.

What brane-world physics says about a higher-dimensional setting
Brane-world physics is a theoretical framework in which our observable universe is described as a brane—a lower-dimensional structure—in a higher-dimensional setting. A scientific review of brane-world gravity discusses models in which gravity is localized at the brane at lower energies and behaves in a higher-dimensional way at high energies. The National Academies’ Brave New Universe also presents extra-dimensional models as theoretical proposals with possible testable consequences.

Where the comparison holds—and where it fails
- Dimensions: Brane-world models explore higher-dimensional settings; the show uses a separate realm as a story element.
- Gravity: Some brane-world models describe how gravity might behave across dimensions; they do not describe Morgan le Fay’s magic.
- Evidence of another world: The framework is theoretical, and the cited sources do not report a detected Dark Dimension or a way to travel to one.
How to read the science in the story
Runaways borrows recognizable ideas from neuroscience, interface design, and theoretical physics to give its fantasy elements points of contact with the real world. The most accurate reading is that these ideas provide analogies, not explanations: the neurological report concerns a subjective experience in one patient, the FTC report concerns manipulative consumer interfaces, and brane-world physics concerns theoretical models of dimensions and gravity.
