Better-PaaS turns a Linux server you control into a platform for deploying Git-based apps. It builds applications with Nixpacks, runs them in Docker, and routes web traffic through Caddy with HTTPS. Its distinctive feature is agent-first administration: you can authorize a scoped token through the paas command-line tool and connect supported coding assistants through MCP, rather than routinely putting the administrator token on your laptop.

What Better-PaaS does

Better-PaaS is open-source, self-hosted platform-as-a-service software. You provide the server and operate it; the platform supplies a control plane and deployment workflow. Its documentation describes a small Go server for the control plane and a Next.js dashboard.

The documented application path is Git repository → Nixpacks build → Docker container → Caddy routing and HTTPS. The project also lists databases, custom domains, scheduled jobs, backups, logs, and an in-browser shell as features. Those are documented capabilities, not independent performance or reliability findings. Better-PaaS project overview

What you need to install it

  • A Linux VPS running Ubuntu or Debian, with root or sudo access.
  • An app in a Git repository.
  • Access to configure the host firewall and, if applicable, the VPS provider’s firewall.

The quickstart specifies ports 3000 for the dashboard, 8080 for the API, and 80 and 443 for web traffic. The vendor describes the setup as taking under 10 minutes, but that is a quickstart estimate, not a guaranteed installation time. Follow the current Better-PaaS quickstart for installation and firewall instructions.

Deploy an app through the dashboard

  1. Install Better-PaaS on the Linux server using the quickstart instructions.
  2. Open the dashboard and log in.
  3. Connect or select the Git repository, then choose the branch to deploy.
  4. Check the app’s status and open its assigned URL once deployment completes.

The platform’s documented build-and-run path uses Nixpacks and Docker, with Caddy handling routing and HTTPS. Build duration and deployment success depend on the app, its dependencies, and the server; the available documentation does not establish independent performance figures.

Connect an AI assistant without routinely using the admin token

Better-PaaS’s agent-first workflow uses the paas CLI to create an authorized, scoped agent connection. The documented sequence is to run paas connect with the dashboard URL, approve the connection in a browser, and then run paas setup to configure MCP integration. The CLI requires Go 1.22 or later. The guide documents MCP configuration for Cursor and Claude Code. Agent and MCP setup guide

The guide says the resulting bpagt_ token is stored in ~/.paas/config.json; the admin token is not saved on the laptop. Permissions depend on the chosen profile: Observer is read-only, while Deployer can deploy. MCP does not expose every possible operation—the repository says destructive actions and some resource management are unavailable through these tools. Review the profile’s permissions before authorizing an assistant.

Understand the security controls and their limit

Better-PaaS documents agent tokens that can be scoped, revoked, and audited, and says mutating API requests are recorded. It also describes AES-256-GCM encryption for saved Git-related credentials. These are vendor-documented controls, not the result of a third-party security audit. Better-PaaS security documentation

The encryption key’s location matters: by default it is stored beside the database. As the security guide puts it, “By default the key lives next to the database, so encryption at rest doesn’t stop an attacker who can already read the entire data directory.” The encryption therefore does not protect those credentials from someone who can read the whole data directory.

What it costs—and what you take on

The project’s pricing page says the self-hosted software is free under AGPL-3.0; you pay your chosen infrastructure provider for the server. The page names Hetzner and DigitalOcean as examples, but does not state a publication year for its pricing guidance. Resource needs vary: the project says production workloads and heavy Nixpacks builds require more resources. Better-PaaS pricing and infrastructure information

Self-hosting gives you control over the server, application data, and runtime, but also leaves infrastructure and server operations to you. You must account for the server, access controls, updates, backups, and the operational consequences of outages. The documentation lists platform backup features, but does not remove the need to understand and manage your own recovery requirements.

When Better-PaaS fits—and when it does not

Consideration Better-PaaS What that means for you
Hosting model Self-hosted on a server you supply You control the infrastructure and remain responsible for operating it.
Deployment workflow Git, Nixpacks, Docker, and Caddy The documented workflow builds and routes apps on your server.
Agent access Scoped CLI token and MCP integration Assistant permissions depend on the selected profile; not every operation is available through MCP.
Scaling model Positioned for workloads on one server, not a multi-region auto-scaling cloud Choose another architecture if multi-region scaling is a requirement.
Operations You supply and manage the infrastructure Server maintenance, capacity, and recovery remain your responsibility.

The project positions Better-PaaS for side projects, hobby apps, and internal tools that suit a single server. It is a plausible fit if you want a Git-based deployment workflow on infrastructure you control and are prepared to operate that server. It is not presented as a managed, multi-region cloud that automatically scales across locations. Project scope and positioning
