Run Uptime Kuma as a Docker Compose service on the same Docker network as Traefik, route a dedicated hostname to the container’s port 3001, and let Traefik terminate HTTPS. Keep /app/data on a local filesystem that supports POSIX file locking, and preserve WebSocket upgrades so live monitoring works. Uptime Kuma does not support being mounted under a URL subdirectory.
How the deployment works
The request path is browser to DNS to Traefik to the Uptime Kuma container. Traefik receives the public HTTPS request, selects a router whose rule matches the hostname, and forwards the request across a Docker network to Uptime Kuma on port 3001. Uptime Kuma stores its configuration and monitoring database under /app/data.

status.example.com. A path such asexample.com/uptimekumais not supported by Uptime Kuma. - Use a shared Docker network: Traefik must be able to resolve and reach the Uptime Kuma container.
- Route to port 3001: this is the port served by the Uptime Kuma container, regardless of whether you publish that port on the host.
- Keep WebSockets intact: Uptime Kuma uses WebSockets for its application connection, so the reverse proxy must allow the HTTP upgrade flow.
- Persist the data directory: mount a durable local or POSIX-lock-capable directory at
/app/data.
The Uptime Kuma reverse-proxy guidance, edited April 24, 2026, describes the application as WebSocket-based and calls for the Upgrade and Connection headers during proxying. It also explicitly rules out subdirectory URLs.
Prerequisites
Before creating the Compose project, prepare the pieces that Compose and Traefik cannot create for you:

- A DNS A or AAAA record for the hostname you will put in the Traefik
Host(...)rule. - A running Traefik instance with an HTTPS entrypoint. In the examples below that entrypoint is named
https; use the name from your own static Traefik configuration. - A configured Traefik certificate resolver. The resolver name in the label must exactly match the configured name; the example uses
myresolver. - A Docker network shared by Traefik and Uptime Kuma. The network may have a different name in your installation.
- A host directory for Uptime Kuma data. It must support local/POSIX-style file locking. The installation guidance warns that unsupported filesystems such as NFS can corrupt the SQLite database.
- Docker Engine with the Compose plugin, so the
docker composecommand is available.
Compose file for a Traefik-only public entry point
When Traefik is already the public entry point, do not publish Uptime Kuma’s port on the host unless you deliberately need a separate direct-access path. Attach the service to Traefik’s network instead. This complete example assumes that the shared network is called proxy:

name: proxyReplace status.example.com, https, myresolver, and proxy with the names used by your deployment. The external: true declaration tells Compose that another stack, normally Traefik, owns the network rather than this project.
The official Compose baseline also shows a host-port mapping of 3001:3001 and mounts ./data at /app/data. With Traefik as the only intended ingress, the host-port mapping can be omitted because Traefik connects directly over Docker networking. The container still listens on port 3001, and the explicit Traefik service-port label ensures that Traefik sends traffic there.

Creating the network and starting Uptime Kuma
- Create or identify the shared network. If it does not already exist, run
docker network create proxyonce. If your Traefik stack uses another network name, use that name in both the command and Compose file. - Create the project directory. For example, make a directory for the Compose file and a sibling
datadirectory. The relative mount./data:/app/dataresolves from the directory containing the Compose file. - Save the YAML. Store the example as
compose.yamlor another Compose filename in the project directory. - Start the service. Run
docker compose up -d. Compose downloadslouislam/uptime-kuma:2if it is not present, creates the container, mounts the data directory, and attaches the container toproxy. - Check the container state. Run
docker compose psand thendocker compose logs -f uptime-kumaif the service is not staying up. - Open the hostname over HTTPS. Once DNS resolves and Traefik has a certificate, browse to
https://status.example.com(using your actual hostname) and complete Uptime Kuma’s initial setup.
Do not change the internal service port to the host port you might use for another application. Traefik needs the container’s listening port, which is 3001 in this image.
What each Traefik label does
Enable Docker-provider discovery
traefik.enable=true tells Traefik to consider this container when it reads Docker labels. If your global Docker-provider settings already expose every container, keeping the label is still useful because it makes the service’s intent explicit.
Match a dedicated hostname
traefik.http.routers.uptime-kuma.rule=Host(`status.example.com`) creates a hostname-based router. The DNS name requested by the browser must match the value inside Host(...). This is also why a subdirectory arrangement cannot be substituted: Uptime Kuma expects to be served at the root of its own host.

Select HTTPS and enable TLS
The entrypoints=https label binds the router to Traefik’s HTTPS entrypoint, while tls=true enables TLS for that router. The tls.certresolver=myresolver label asks the named resolver to obtain and renew the certificate. A typo in either the entrypoint or resolver name prevents the intended TLS configuration from being selected.
Tell Traefik the backend port
traefik.http.services.uptime-kuma.loadBalancer.server.port=3001 explicitly selects Uptime Kuma’s container port. Traefik’s Docker provider supports this label as an override for automatic port detection; it is especially valuable when a service exposes more than one port or does not publish a host port.
Give Traefik a reachable network path
Labels describe the route, but they do not create connectivity. Both containers must be attached to the same reachable Docker network, or to an equivalent network path configured for your Traefik deployment. If Traefik is attached to several networks, verify that it can reach the one containing Uptime Kuma rather than assuming that a common Compose project name is sufficient.

DNS and certificate checks
Create the DNS record before testing the router. The record should resolve the hostname to the public address where Traefik accepts HTTPS traffic. Then verify that the names in the Compose labels correspond exactly to Traefik’s static configuration:

The Uptime Kuma reverse-proxy instructions state that Traefik can obtain a Let’s Encrypt certificate when the resolver is configured correctly. Certificate issuance still depends on the DNS record, the resolver’s own settings, and Traefik being able to complete its chosen challenge.
WebSocket behavior and verification
Uptime Kuma’s interface is not just a collection of ordinary HTTP pages. Its live connection uses WebSockets. The project’s guidance says a reverse proxy must pass the Upgrade and Connection headers required to switch from HTTP to WebSocket.

Traefik’s HTTP routing can proxy WebSockets, so the normal first step is to verify the route and network rather than add arbitrary middleware. Avoid custom middleware that strips hop-by-hop upgrade headers. In a browser, open Developer Tools, select the Network panel, filter for WebSocket traffic, and reload the page. A successful connection completes an HTTP 101 upgrade; a failed or repeatedly closed connection points to proxy handling, TLS termination, or network reachability.
If the initial page renders but monitor status does not update, inspect the WebSocket request and Traefik logs before changing Uptime Kuma settings. A page that never loads at all is more likely to indicate a DNS, router, certificate, or backend-port problem.

Trusting forwarded headers
When Uptime Kuma is completely behind Traefik and firewall rules prevent direct access to the container, you can enable its proxy trust setting so forwarded client information is accepted:
- Sign in to Uptime Kuma.
- Open Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers.
- Enable Trust Proxy.
This setting allows the application to use forwarded headers so the client IP appears correctly in logs. Enable it only when the proxy is the controlled path to the application; exposing the application directly while trusting arbitrary forwarded headers can make logged client information unreliable.

Both choices still use port 3001 inside the container and still require the Traefik service-port label. Publishing a host port does not replace the shared Docker network; Traefik should continue to use the container network path.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Traefik returns 404 or its default page
- Check that the browser hostname exactly matches the
Host(...)rule, including spelling and the absence of an unexpected alternate name. - Confirm the DNS record points to the Traefik host.
- Verify that the router uses the actual HTTPS entrypoint name.
- Inspect Traefik’s configuration or logs to confirm that the Docker provider discovered the container and labels.
Traefik returns 502 Bad Gateway
- Run
docker compose psto ensure Uptime Kuma is running. - Confirm the service-port label is exactly 3001.
- Run
docker network inspect proxy(substituting your network name) and verify that both Traefik and Uptime Kuma are attached. - Check Uptime Kuma logs with
docker compose logs uptime-kumafor startup or database errors.
The certificate is missing or invalid
- Check that
tls=trueand the resolver label are present. - Compare the resolver label character-for-character with Traefik’s configured resolver.
- Confirm DNS is already resolving the hostname to the Traefik endpoint and review Traefik’s certificate-resolver logs.
The page loads but live updates fail
- Inspect the browser’s WebSocket request and look for a failed upgrade or repeated disconnects.
- Check for middleware or an upstream proxy that removes
UpgradeorConnectionhandling. - Verify that Traefik can reach the container over the shared network and that the router is using HTTPS consistently, rather than loading the page over one scheme and attempting the socket over another.
Uptime Kuma reports database or startup problems
- Check that
./datais mounted at/app/dataand is writable by the container. - Move the data directory off NFS or another filesystem without reliable POSIX locking; the SQLite database depends on correct locking behavior.
- Do not delete the data directory while troubleshooting. Preserve it and investigate the filesystem and container logs first.
Operational checklist
- DNS resolves the chosen hostname to the Traefik endpoint.
- The hostname in the DNS record matches the Traefik
Host(...)rule. - The HTTPS entrypoint and certificate resolver labels match Traefik’s static configuration.
- Traefik and Uptime Kuma share a reachable Docker network.
- The backend service label points to port 3001.
./datais mounted at/app/dataon a local or POSIX-lock-capable filesystem.- The service starts with
docker compose up -dand remains healthy indocker compose ps. - The HTTPS page loads and the browser establishes its WebSocket connection.
- Trust Proxy is enabled under Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers only when the application is fully protected behind your controlled proxy and firewall.
With those conditions met, Traefik supplies the hostname-based HTTPS edge while Uptime Kuma remains a normal container listening on port 3001, with its state safely persisted under /app/data.
