Yes—MockMate is presented as a free interview-practice app that runs on your own laptop, using a local language model. Its creator built it for a friend preparing for cloud and data analytics jobs. The project article describes its features and setup, but does not establish which operating systems or laptop configurations it supports, and its privacy claim has not been independently verified. Read the project article.

What MockMate does

MockMate is designed to let someone practice interview questions in Python, Excel, SQL, Power BI, and cloud basics. The project article says users can choose between Fresher and Intermediate levels. After an answer, the app provides a score out of 10, notes what was good and what was missing, and suggests a stronger sample answer.

It also saves attempts. A Progress tab shows average performance by topic and identifies the weakest topic, giving the learner a way to spot areas to revisit.

How the local setup is described

The creator lists Ollama for local model inference, Qwen2.5:7b as the model, Streamlit for the interface, and SQLite for saving data in a local file named mockmate.db. The initial model setup instruction is:

ollama pull qwen2.5:7b

This is only the model-pull command, not a complete installation guide. The project article does not provide all commands or steps needed to install and launch the app, so use its instructions for the full process: MockMate project article.

What to check before trying it

The project article does not state supported operating systems, minimum RAM or storage, supported hardware, setup time, or expected speed. It therefore cannot establish whether a particular laptop will run MockMate well. Check the project’s current setup instructions and your system’s compatibility before relying on it; the available description is not a hardware guide.

The article says answers never leave the laptop. That is the author’s stated design claim, not an independently verified privacy guarantee: the source does not include a data-flow audit, threat model, or dependency configuration. If the answers contain sensitive information, verify how the app and its dependencies handle data before using it.

Who it may suit

MockMate may be useful for a friend who wants structured practice in the listed cloud and analytics topics and is comfortable following a local software setup. Its score, feedback, sample answers, and saved progress are practice aids; the project description does not establish that they predict interview outcomes or replace feedback from a qualified interviewer.

The source also does not establish license terms for the project or its dependencies, so it is not enough to advise on redistribution. For personal use, consult the project’s own current documentation and licensing information.
