upmd turns fenced code blocks in a Markdown file into runnable tasks. You can run a single named block, work through tasks in a terminal UI, or execute a dependency-aware workflow from a CLI or CI job. It is useful when you want operational instructions and the commands that carry them out to live together in one document.
How upmd treats Markdown as a workflow
In upmd, a fenced code block can be a task rather than just an example. Add a name attribute to address a block directly, and use deps to declare which tasks must run first. The README’s example builds a workflow with build, then lint and test depending on it, followed by verify depending on both. See the upmd README for the project’s syntax and examples.
Dependencies determine staging: tasks separated by | share a stage, while commas begin a later stage. A failure skips later stages. With --all, unrelated tasks can continue despite a failure, but the overall command still exits non-zero. This is useful when independent checks should finish even if one branch fails.

Use the task name that appears in the Markdown file; the command shown here is an example, not a guarantee that every installed version accepts identical flags.
Explore tasks in a terminal UI
The project documents a terminal interface for navigating and searching blocks, running selected tasks, inspecting full output, and sending input to a running task. This mode suits documents where you want to inspect the commands and their output while working through them.

Execution context, supported languages, and state
upmd says tasks run in a real pseudo-terminal, which is intended to support interactive prompts, colors, editors, and pagers. That differs from treating every block as a simple non-interactive command; whether a particular program behaves as expected still depends on its own requirements and your environment.
The README lists built-in runners for these languages and shells:

When upmd is a good fit
upmd is worth considering when a Markdown document should function as both explanation and an executable operational workflow. Its named tasks and dependency stages are especially relevant when a procedure has prerequisites or independent checks, while the terminal UI is useful for running blocks interactively. For automation, the CI mode and non-zero failure behavior provide a documented path to run workflows from a job.
Before adopting it, check whether your workflow depends on interactive terminal behavior, cross-task shell state, or one of the experimental language state-capture features. The project documents these capabilities, but the available official material does not provide independent performance, reliability, or comparison data against other Markdown task tools.
