Short answer: The RTX 5080 is typically 9–12% faster than the RTX 4080 SUPER in conventional gaming averages, with the largest measured advantage at 4K. It also brings Blackwell architecture, GDDR7 memory, newer ray-tracing and Tensor Cores, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. In exchange, its board-power rating rises from 320W to 360W. Because both cards launched at $999 and have 16GB of memory, the RTX 4080 SUPER remains the better value when you can buy it substantially cheaper; the RTX 5080 makes more sense for a new build or for buyers who specifically want its newer neural-rendering features.
RTX 5080 vs RTX 4080 SUPER at a glance
The two cards occupy the same original price tier but are not equivalent upgrades. The RTX 5080 is a newer-generation replacement with a modest conventional frame-rate lead and a larger feature change. The RTX 4080 SUPER is an older Ada Lovelace card whose performance remains close enough that a discounted model can be the rational purchase.

At 1440p
The 19-game geometric mean is 104.0 FPS for the RTX 5080 versus 95.7 FPS for the RTX 4080 SUPER. That is an 8.7% advantage. At this level, the difference is visible in benchmarks but often difficult to notice while playing unless the faster card moves a title across a refresh-rate threshold or prevents dips below a target frame rate.

1440p can also expose CPU limits. If your processor is already limiting either card, replacing the GPU will not produce the full average shown above. Competitive games running at low settings are particularly likely to become CPU-limited, making both cards excessive for many 1080p systems.
At 4K
At 3840×2160, the same test set records 65.5 FPS for the RTX 5080 and 58.5 FPS for the RTX 4080 SUPER, a 12.0% lead. The larger gap occurs because 4K puts more pressure on GPU shaders, memory throughput, and rendering features, reducing the chance that the CPU hides the architectural difference.
The average still does not tell the whole story. SpecPicks reports a 4K gap of only 2.2% in Black Myth: Wukong with upscaling, but as much as 20.0% in God of War Ragnarök at native 4K. Game engines, settings, patches, and whether a test uses native rendering or an upscaler can change the result substantially.
What the averages do not prove
NVIDIA’s January 15, 2025 launch material says the RTX 5080 is “up to twice the speed” of the RTX 4080 in games with Blackwell and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. That is an official feature-enabled claim against the RTX 4080, not a universal result against the RTX 4080 SUPER. It should not be read as a two-times raster-performance advantage.
GamersNexus measured a 7–10% uplift from the RTX 5080 over the RTX 4080 in the lower end of its tested results and identified an original $1,000 MSRP and January 30, 2025 release. The closest directly comparable RTX 4080 SUPER figures in the cited material are the ComputerBase results above, which show a conventional advantage in the high-single-digit to low-double-digit range.

Raster, ray tracing, and frame-generation results are different things
Conventional raster rendering
Raster averages are the clearest way to compare the cards as rendering hardware. In the 19-game data, the RTX 5080 leads by 8.7% at 1440p and 12.0% at 4K. Use those numbers when deciding whether a higher purchase price is justified by ordinary game performance.
Ray tracing
The supplied comparative results do not establish one single ray-traced FPS average for both cards. Ray-tracing performance varies with the effect level, resolution, denoising, upscaling, and frame generation. The RTX 5080’s fourth-generation RT Cores are newer than the RTX 4080 SUPER’s Ada RT hardware, but a specific percentage should not be inferred without matching tests.

A result using native 4K is not directly comparable with one using DLSS Super Resolution, and a displayed FPS number using generated frames is not the same as the number of frames rendered traditionally.
DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation
The RTX 5080 supports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, while RTX 40-series comparisons use the earlier generation features and Frame Generation. Multi Frame Generation can increase the displayed frame rate by inserting more AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. That can make motion appear smoother, but generated frames do not equal the same number of natively rendered frames and do not remove the input-latency or CPU constraints of the underlying game.
For a meaningful comparison, report whether DLSS is off, using Super Resolution only, using Frame Generation, or using Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s largest performance claims depend on the feature-enabled configuration; independent conventional tests show a much smaller uplift.

Architecture and memory: what changes in practice?
Blackwell versus Ada Lovelace
The RTX 5080 moves to NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture. It adds fifth-generation Tensor Cores and fourth-generation RT Cores, alongside the newer neural-rendering stack used by DLSS 4. The RTX 4080 SUPER uses Ada Lovelace and its mature DLSS 3-era platform.

These are platform differences rather than a guarantee that every game will run 12% faster. A title that does not use the newer neural features mainly benefits from the 5080’s conventional GPU and memory improvements. A title that supports the relevant DLSS features may show a much larger displayed-FPS change, but that number must be identified as generated-frame performance.
GDDR7 versus GDDR6X
Both cards have 16GB of VRAM, so the RTX 5080 does not provide a capacity upgrade. Its memory is GDDR7, while the RTX 4080 SUPER uses GDDR6X. The newer memory provides a higher-bandwidth platform, which helps the 5080 at demanding resolutions, but the cited material does not establish a single bandwidth figure that applies to every board design.
Because capacity is identical, neither card is automatically better for a workload that is limited by VRAM quantity. Texture settings, mods, professional applications, and future games can still exceed 16GB; switching between these two models does not solve that capacity issue.
Power use, thermals, and the power-supply question
Board-power difference
The RTX 5080 carries a 360W TDP or board-power rating, compared with 320W for the RTX 4080 SUPER. The difference is 40W. TDP is not a measurement of total power at the wall: actual consumption depends on the board partner’s design, the selected power limit, workload, cooling, processor, storage, fans, and other components.

Sustained inference workloads can run below the rated board figure, according to SpecPicks, while short gaming bursts and factory-overclocked cards can behave differently. Treat 360W and 320W as planning values for the graphics card, not as whole-system measurements.
Estimating PSU capacity
SpecPicks suggests planning around 1.5 times the higher board draw. Applying that rule to the RTX 5080 gives roughly 540W before adding the CPU and the rest of the system. That arithmetic is a floor for planning, not a universal recommended PSU wattage; a high-power processor, several drives, overclocking, or transient spikes requires additional margin.
- Check the exact board-partner specification for the card you intend to buy, including its stated recommended PSU.
- Add the processor’s maximum package power and the known draw of drives, pumps, fans, and USB-powered devices.
- Leave headroom rather than sizing the supply to the GPU’s TDP alone.
- Verify that the supply provides the required modern 16-pin GPU connector, or use only the adapter and cable combination approved for that supply and card.
- After installation, monitor GPU power, temperature, clock behavior, and stability under a sustained game or rendering workload.
You may need a new PSU when an existing unit lacks the required connector, has insufficient capacity after the CPU and peripherals are counted, is old or degraded, or uses an adapter arrangement that the manufacturer does not support. A 40W increase alone does not prove that every RTX 4080 SUPER system needs replacement.

Launch pricing
Both models launched at a $999 MSRP. The RTX 5080 launched on January 30, 2025, while NVIDIA announced the product on January 15. The RTX 4080 SUPER’s launch MSRP was also $999. Equal launch pricing does not mean equal current pricing: remaining RTX 4080 SUPER stock, retailer discounts, regional taxes, and board designs determine the price you actually pay.
How to judge a street-price gap
Use the measured 8.7% 1440p and 12.0% 4K conventional uplift as the performance baseline. If the RTX 5080 costs only a little more, the newer architecture, GDDR7, and DLSS 4 support may justify choosing it. If the RTX 4080 SUPER is materially cheaper, its near-flagship performance and identical 16GB capacity make it the stronger value.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not assign the full value of NVIDIA’s “up to twice the speed” statement to every title. That claim requires supported DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation conditions and is not a normal raster comparison.
Which card should you buy?
Choose the RTX 5080 for a new high-end build when:
- You want the newest Blackwell platform rather than an end-of-generation Ada model.
- Your target is demanding 4K gaming and a roughly 12% conventional uplift is worth the price difference.
- You intend to use games that support DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and understand the difference between generated and rendered frames.
- You value the newer Tensor and RT Core generations and higher-bandwidth GDDR7 memory, even though capacity remains 16GB.
- Your case airflow and PSU can accommodate a 360W graphics-card design.
Choose the RTX 4080 SUPER when:
- You can buy it substantially below the RTX 5080’s current price.
- You already own one and are considering an upgrade based only on ordinary raster FPS.
- You play at 1440p where the average advantage is about 8.7% and your CPU may limit either card.
- You do not need DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and prefer the mature Ada platform.
- Your existing system is already correctly powered and cooled for a 320W card.
Keep either card if you already own it
An RTX 4080 SUPER owner should not expect a transformative upgrade from the RTX 5080 in conventional games. The measured difference is meaningful at 4K but still modest relative to the cost of replacing a working high-end card. Upgrade when you need a specific DLSS 4 feature, require additional platform headroom, or can sell the existing card and purchase the 5080 at a clearly favorable net cost.
Resolution and system-matching advice
1080p
At 1080p, both GPUs can be overkill unless you use very high refresh rates, demanding ray tracing, or workloads other than gaming. CPU limits become more common, so benchmark the games and settings you actually use before paying for the 5080’s additional hardware.
1440p
1440p is where the RTX 5080’s average lead is easiest to describe but not always easiest to feel: 104.0 versus 95.7 FPS in the 19-game mean. Check minimums and frame-time consistency, not only the average, if your monitor has a fixed refresh target.
4K
4K exposes the larger 12.0% average advantage and makes the newer card’s memory subsystem and rendering features more relevant. Native 4K, upscaled 4K, ray-traced 4K, and frame-generated 4K are separate test categories; choose the card using the category that matches your settings.
How to compare reviews without being misled
- Confirm that both cards use the same game version, graphics preset, resolution, and driver conditions.
- Separate native raster results from ray-traced results.
- Record the upscaler setting: off, Super Resolution, or another mode.
- Record whether Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation is enabled.
- Check whether the processor is limiting 1080p or low-setting results.
- Compare board power and temperatures from the same type of workload; never substitute TDP for measured wall power.
- Use the actual retailer price in your region, including taxes and shipping, instead of the original $999 MSRP.
This process prevents a feature-enabled displayed-FPS result from being mistaken for a raw rendering advantage and prevents a single game’s unusually large or small gap from standing in for the whole generation.
Bottom-line buying decision
For a new purchase, the RTX 5080 is the technically superior card: it is about 9–12% faster in the best directly comparable conventional averages, uses newer Blackwell hardware and GDDR7, and supports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. It also costs more on the street when supply or demand separates it from the original $999 MSRP and carries a 40W higher board-power rating.

The RTX 4080 SUPER is the sensible value choice whenever its price is materially lower, especially for 1440p gaming or for an owner whose current card already delivers the required performance. The decision is therefore less about a dramatic generational leap than about the price premium you place on a modest raster uplift and the 5080’s newer feature set.
