Short answer: The RTX 5070 is modestly faster in the independent 4K comparison available here and adds NVIDIA’s newer Multi Frame Generation feature. The RTX 4070 Super can still be the better buy when its actual price is substantially lower and it delivers the frame rates you need. Because results vary by game, settings, DLSS mode, board design and local pricing, there is no universal winner.

The practical answer for most buyers

Choose the RTX 5070 when you want the newer Blackwell generation, expect to use supported Multi Frame Generation games, and can buy a suitable card at a price close to—or only modestly above—a comparable RTX 4070 Super. Choose the RTX 4070 Super when a genuine discount makes it meaningfully cheaper, your games already run well on it, or you prefer to avoid paying for features you will not use.

That recommendation is deliberately conditional. The independent evidence available for this comparison is not a complete, matched 1080p/1440p/4K test suite covering rasterization, ray tracing, every DLSS mode and every board model. A result measured in one review is useful evidence, not a guarantee for your particular games.

What the available performance evidence says

Evidence RTX 5070 result or characteristic How to interpret it
TechSpot 4K comparison, 2025 6% ahead of the RTX 4070 Super in its tested 4K results A review-specific average under that test suite; it is not a universal lead at every resolution, game or image-quality setting.
Tom’s Hardware best-gaming-GPU roundup, October 2026 103.8 FPS at 1080p, 74.0 FPS at 1440p and 37.6 FPS at 4K Roundup results, not guaranteed frame rates. The games, settings, drivers and test system used by that roundup determine the numbers.
Tom’s Hardware price snapshot, October 2026 $659 median street price versus a $549 MSRP A dated US snapshot, not a current offer and not a matched RTX 4070 Super price.
PC Gamer price watch, October 8, 2026 One 12 GB RTX 5070 listing at $779 A single retailer listing that may be stale; it should not be treated as the card’s normal or current price.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 family specifications GDDR6X memory Family-level information. Check the exact RTX 4070 Super board for its complete specification.

The 6% 4K advantage is the clearest direct head-to-head result in the supplied material. It supports calling the RTX 5070 modestly faster in that test, not declaring it faster in every workload. The two Tom’s Hardware figures are useful context for the 5070’s tested scaling from 1080p through 4K, but they do not form a direct RTX 4070 Super comparison.

Generation and feature differences

Blackwell versus Ada Lovelace

NVIDIA places the RTX 5070 in its Blackwell family and the RTX 4070 Super in the RTX 40-series family. That generational distinction matters mainly because feature support and implementation can differ, not because a newer name automatically guarantees better value.

The official family pages identify GDDR7 for the RTX 5070 and GDDR6X for the RTX 4070 family. Memory type alone does not determine game performance. Capacity, memory traffic, cache behavior, the game engine, texture settings and resolution all affect whether a difference is visible. Use the specification sheet for the exact add-in board rather than assuming that every model has identical cooling, power delivery or physical dimensions.

DLSS, ray reconstruction and generated frames

NVIDIA’s own 1440p, maximum-settings presentation enables DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction for both generations. In that presentation, RTX 40-series cards use Frame Generation, while RTX 50-series cards use Multi Frame Generation in 4X mode. This is a feature demonstration rather than a native-rendering benchmark.

Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output; Ray Reconstruction changes how supported ray-traced effects are reconstructed; Frame Generation inserts AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation can generate multiple frames for each conventionally rendered frame in supported titles. A displayed frame rate that includes generated frames is not the same measurement as the number of fully rendered frames produced by the GPU.

When reading a chart or review, record whether these options are enabled, which DLSS mode is selected, whether ray tracing is active and whether the result counts generated frames. Comparing a native RTX 4070 Super result with a 5070 result using 4X Multi Frame Generation would answer a feature question, not a like-for-like rendering question.

How the cards fit different resolutions

1080p gaming

At 1080p, the graphics card may not be the only limit. A fast processor, game engine or frame-rate cap can reduce the visible difference between two GPUs. The Tom’s Hardware roundup recorded 103.8 FPS for the RTX 5070 in its 1080p test conditions, but that figure belongs to the roundup’s particular games, settings, drivers and test platform.

If your target is a high-refresh 1080p display, compare the frame-time consistency and the minimum or one-percent-low results where a review provides them, not just an average. Also check whether your CPU can sustain the target rate. Paying more for the 5070 may bring little practical benefit if the processor or game engine is already limiting performance.

1440p gaming

1440p is a common target for this class of card because it places more work on the GPU while retaining a sharper image than 1080p. NVIDIA’s feature comparison uses 1440p maximum settings, with Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction enabled on both generations. That setup is useful for showing supported features, but it should not be described as native 1440p performance.

The Tom’s Hardware roundup measured 74.0 FPS for the RTX 5070 at 1440p under its own test conditions. For a purchase decision, seek a review that uses the games you actually play and note whether its 74.0-FPS-style result includes upscaling, ray tracing or generated frames. The RTX 4070 Super may be preferable at this resolution if its lower street price leaves room in your budget for more storage, memory or a better monitor.

4K gaming

4K produces the strongest direct evidence in favor of the RTX 5070: TechSpot’s tested results put it 6% ahead of the RTX 4070 Super. The difference is meaningful but modest. It can disappear in a particular title, change with ray tracing or DLSS, and be overwhelmed by a price gap.

Tom’s Hardware recorded 37.6 FPS for the RTX 5070 at 4K in its roundup. Treat that as a workload-specific observation. At 4K, identify whether the game is using native rendering, Super Resolution, ray tracing and frame generation. A card that averages an acceptable rate with upscaling may have a different image-quality trade-off from one producing a lower native-rendered rate.

Rasterization, ray tracing and upscaling are separate questions

Native rasterization

For a conventional comparison, disable frame generation and use the same resolution and graphics preset on both cards. Keep the game version, driver branch, background applications and frame-rate cap consistent. This isolates the number of frames conventionally rendered by the GPU and is the most straightforward way to compare raw raster performance.

Ray-traced workloads

Ray tracing can change the balance between cards and can make an otherwise small difference more visible or less relevant, depending on the title. Record the exact ray-tracing preset and individual options. Do not combine a ray-tracing result with a non-ray-traced result and label the combined figure as a general performance lead.

DLSS and image quality

DLSS settings alter both performance and the rendered image. “DLSS on” is incomplete information: state the selected Super Resolution mode and whether Ray Reconstruction is enabled. Compare screenshots or motion in the same scene when image quality matters, because an average FPS number cannot describe reconstruction artifacts, fine-detail stability or ghosting.

Memory: what is established and what is not

The surfaced TechSpot review describes the RTX 5070 as a 12 GB GPU. NVIDIA’s family information distinguishes GDDR7 on the RTX 5070 from GDDR6X on the RTX 4070 family. The material here does not establish a universal verdict that 12 GB is either sufficient or insufficient.

VRAM pressure depends on the game, resolution, texture quality, ray-tracing options, mod usage and the amount of detail visible at once. If a game reports texture-memory warnings or performance improves sharply after lowering textures, that is evidence for your workload; it is not proof that every future game will behave the same way. Check the exact RTX 4070 Super model’s capacity and memory specification before comparing it with a particular 5070 board.

Price and value change faster than the GPU names

The October 2026 Tom’s Hardware roundup placed the RTX 5070 at a $659 median street price against a $549 MSRP. PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 price watch showed one 12 GB listing at $779. Those figures demonstrate why a buyer should check several current US listings rather than rely on a headline price. They are snapshots from different publications and dates, not a single authoritative market price.

No comparable, same-condition RTX 4070 Super price is established in the supplied material. Do not infer its value from the 5070’s MSRP or from a retailer listing for a different board. Compare cards with similar cooler quality, warranty terms, return policy and condition. A heavily discounted previous-generation card can be the better value even when the newer card is faster.

A simple value calculation

Use the price you can actually pay and the performance result relevant to your games. If the 5070 costs 10% more but produces only a small improvement in your settings, the 4070 Super may offer better value. If the prices are close and you will use supported Multi Frame Generation titles, the 5070’s newer feature set can justify choosing it. This is a decision rule, not a claim about a fixed market percentage.

Check the exact board before ordering

“RTX 5070” and “RTX 4070 Super” describe GPU classes, not one physical product. Manufacturers sell boards with different heatsinks, fan layouts, lengths, slot widths, connectors and factory settings. The available sources do not settle those requirements for every model.

  • Measure the case clearance for the card’s full length, including any front radiator or drive cage.
  • Confirm the occupied slot width and leave room for adjacent expansion cards.
  • Check the board’s specified power connector and the cable arrangement supplied with your power supply.
  • Read the manufacturer’s recommended PSU capacity for that exact model; do not transfer guidance from another 5070 or 4070 Super board.
  • Verify monitor outputs, included adapters, warranty coverage and return terms.
  • Confirm that your motherboard, case airflow and operating-system drivers support the installation.

These checks matter more than a small theoretical performance difference if the card cannot fit, power safely or run quietly in your system.

A purchase process that avoids common mistakes

  1. List your real target. Write down the games you play, resolution, refresh rate, ray-tracing preference and whether you are willing to use DLSS or generated frames.
  2. Choose a comparison mode. For raw performance, use native rendering with frame generation disabled. For a feature comparison, document Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation separately.
  3. Find matched reviews. Prefer a review that tests both cards on the same games, driver version, processor, memory, resolution and graphics preset. Treat a single 4K average as directional evidence.
  4. Record image-quality settings. Note the exact DLSS mode, ray-tracing options, texture preset and any frame cap. Do not compare an upscaled result with a native result without labeling the difference.
  5. Check several live prices. Compare the exact board model, condition, shipping, tax, return policy and warranty. Keep the date and region with your notes because prices and availability move.
  6. Validate physical compatibility. Use the board manufacturer’s dimensions, connector diagram and PSU guidance, then compare them with your case and existing cables.
  7. Buy based on the total trade-off. Select the 5070 when its price and supported features fit your priorities; select the 4070 Super when its discount outweighs the modest performance gap for your games.

If you can test both cards, use this protocol

  1. Install the same game build and graphics driver conditions for each card.
  2. Use the same processor, system memory, storage, monitor, resolution and graphics preset.
  3. Run a repeatable route or built-in benchmark for several passes after shader compilation has completed.
  4. Start with native rendering and frame generation off.
  5. Repeat with the same DLSS Super Resolution mode, then with ray tracing enabled at the same preset.
  6. Run Frame Generation on the RTX 4070 Super and Multi Frame Generation on the RTX 5070 only as separate feature tests; label generated-frame results clearly.
  7. Record average FPS and frame-time behavior, plus image-quality observations in the same scene.

This procedure will not make one card universally superior, but it will tell you which trade-off suits your games and display.

Common comparison mistakes

Treating a review average as a law

A 6% lead in one 4K review is a useful measurement from that review’s workload. It is not an industry-wide statistic and does not predict every title, resolution or driver update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing feature modes

Enabling 4X Multi Frame Generation on one card while measuring the other with Frame Generation off answers different questions. Keep native, upscaled and generated-frame results in separate rows.

Using MSRP as today’s price

An MSRP is a reference point, not proof that a card is in stock at that amount. Retailer listings can be promotional, region-specific or stale. Compare current, like-for-like listings.

Ignoring the board model

Two cards with the same GPU name can have different physical and electrical requirements. Confirm dimensions, slots, connectors and PSU guidance before checkout.

Assuming memory type settles the decision

GDDR7 versus GDDR6X is a generation-level distinction, not a complete performance verdict. Game workload and capacity requirements still decide whether memory affects your experience.
