Expect a modest, workload-dependent improvement from an RTX 5060 laptop—not a guaranteed 20%, 30%, or 2× native-rendering gain. The RTX 5060 uses newer Blackwell architecture, GDDR7 memory and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, while the RTX 4060 uses Ada Lovelace, GDDR6 and DLSS 3-era features. In one controlled Asus TUF Gaming A14 comparison, the RTX 5060 won three of four listed tests but lost the 1440p Cyberpunk 2077 ray-tracing test. The laptop’s power limit, cooling, processor, screen resolution and game settings can matter as much as the GPU name.
The short answer: faster, but not uniformly faster
If two laptops are otherwise comparable, the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU is generally the better performer and the more future-facing choice. Its newer architecture, faster GDDR7 memory and support for DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation give it capabilities the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU does not have. However, those improvements do not produce one fixed frame-rate percentage across every game.
A direct comparison of two Asus TUF Gaming A14 configurations illustrates the point. The RTX 5060 version was faster in both tested Red Dead Redemption 2 runs and in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p. The RTX 4060 version was slightly faster in Cyberpunk at 1440p with ray tracing set to ultra. These are results from specific laptop configurations, not a guarantee for every machine carrying the same GPU label.
For a purchase decision, compare the complete laptop: sustained GPU wattage, cooling, CPU, memory, display resolution and price. A high-power RTX 4060 can approach or exceed a low-power RTX 5060 in some workloads, while a well-cooled RTX 5060 can pull further ahead in newer games that support its features.

RTX 5060 Laptop and RTX 4060 Laptop specifications
NVIDIA’s official comparison lists both laptop GPUs in 8 GB configurations, but the memory technology and graphics architecture differ. The RTX 5060 is a Blackwell-generation part with 3,328 CUDA cores and GDDR7. The RTX 4060 is based on Ada Lovelace, has 3,072 CUDA cores and uses GDDR6. NVIDIA lists DLSS 4 support, including Multi Frame Generation, for the RTX 5060 and DLSS 3-era support for the RTX 4060.
| Specification or feature | RTX 5060 Laptop GPU | RTX 4060 Laptop GPU | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell | Ada Lovelace | A newer generation can add efficiency and features, but architecture names alone do not establish a fixed FPS increase. |
| CUDA cores | 3,328 | 3,072 | The 5060 has more shader resources, but core count is not a direct gaming-performance multiplier. |
| Standard memory configuration | 8 GB GDDR7 | 8 GB GDDR6 | GDDR7 provides newer memory technology; both GPUs still have the same listed capacity. |
| Upscaling and frame generation | DLSS 4, including Multi Frame Generation | DLSS 3-era features | Benefits depend on game support, image-quality preferences and the laptop’s baseline frame rate. |
See NVIDIA’s official GeForce laptop comparison for the listed specifications. The equal 8 GB capacity is important: GDDR7 does not remove the possibility that a demanding game can become memory-limited at high textures, ray tracing or higher resolutions.
What the direct game tests show
Tom’s Guide tested RTX 5060 and RTX 4060 versions of the Asus TUF Gaming A14. The results below should be read as measurements of those complete laptops, including their power settings, cooling systems, processors and software configurations.
| Game and settings | RTX 5060 laptop | RTX 4060 laptop | Difference in this test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p, ray tracing ultra | 32.03 FPS | 29.45 FPS | 5060 ahead by 2.58 FPS, approximately 8.8% from the 4060 result |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1440p, ray tracing ultra | 13.73 FPS | 14.97 FPS | 4060 ahead by 1.24 FPS, approximately 8.3% from the 4060 result |
| Red Dead Redemption 2, 1080p, medium | 69.21 FPS | 60.15 FPS | 5060 ahead by 9.06 FPS, approximately 15.1% from the 4060 result |
| Red Dead Redemption 2, 1440p, medium | 42.32 FPS | 36.38 FPS | 5060 ahead by 5.94 FPS, approximately 16.3% from the 4060 result |
These percentages are simple calculations from the published frame rates; they are not an average rating for all RTX 5060 and RTX 4060 laptops. The important pattern is the mixed result. The newer GPU did not automatically win every resolution and workload, and the absolute frame rates in the 1440p ray-tracing test were low on both systems.
The complete comparison is available in Tom’s Guide’s RTX 5060 laptops versus RTX 4060 coverage. The article discussed a $150 difference between the reviewed options. That figure is the price context of that comparison, not a current universal market price.
Why one laptop can be much faster than another with the same GPU
Laptop GPU names describe a family of chips, not one fixed performance level. Manufacturers can configure the same GPU at different power limits and pair it with very different cooling hardware.
GPU power limit
Notebookcheck’s RTX 5060 Laptop database includes systems reported at 55 W and 115 W, among other configurations. A higher sustained power limit can allow more clock speed, provided the cooling system can remove the additional heat. A thin laptop running an RTX 5060 at a low limit may therefore trail a larger RTX 4060 laptop configured for higher sustained power.

Check the listing or review for the GPU’s total graphics power, maximum graphics power and whether a dynamic boost range is used. Do not compare a wattage from one manufacturer’s marketing page with a different manufacturer’s testing mode without checking how each value was measured.
Cooling and sustained clocks
Short benchmark runs can look similar while longer gaming sessions diverge as temperatures rise. Reviews that report sustained performance, fan mode and temperatures are more useful than a peak clock figure. A laptop that reaches its thermal limit may reduce GPU clocks, especially when the CPU and GPU share a compact cooling system.
Processor and memory
CPU-heavy games, high-refresh competitive titles and open-world simulation can be limited by the processor rather than the GPU. Compare the exact CPU model, memory capacity and memory-channel configuration. Two laptops with the same RTX 5060 can produce different results if one has a faster processor, dual-channel memory and a more aggressive performance mode.
Display resolution and output mode
A 1080p panel places less rendering demand on the GPU than a 1440p panel. Some laptops also route the internal display through integrated graphics unless a hardware multiplexer or dedicated-GPU mode is enabled. When comparing reviews, confirm that the same display resolution, refresh mode and graphics mode were used.

Native rendering versus DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation
DLSS can change the apparent performance gap, but generated frames must be kept separate from frames rendered natively by the GPU.
What the RTX 5060 adds
The RTX 5060 supports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. In supported games, the feature uses AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. It can raise the displayed frame rate and make a high-refresh screen feel smoother, but it does not mean the GPU is rendering every displayed frame from scratch.

How to interpret NVIDIA’s “double” claim
NVIDIA states that, with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation enabled, the GeForce RTX 5060 offers double the performance of the previous-generation RTX 4060 in games using that feature. This is a manufacturer claim conditioned on specific games and settings, not an independent universal benchmark and not a promise of twice the native-rendered FPS. The wording and feature context appear in NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation announcement.

When generated frames help
- The game explicitly supports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation.
- The base rendered frame rate is already high enough for acceptable responsiveness.
- You value smoother motion on a high-refresh display more than the lowest possible latency.
- You are willing to evaluate image quality and motion artifacts on a game-by-game basis.
When to compare native or ordinary upscaled results
- The game has no DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation support.
- You are comparing GPU horsepower for rendering quality, ray tracing or heavy texture settings.
- You play latency-sensitive competitive games where generated frames may not improve input response in the same way they improve the frame counter.
- You want a result that can be compared consistently across laptops and review suites.
Ask reviews to show whether a result is native, DLSS-upscaled, frame-generated or a combination. A 120 FPS counter produced with generated frames and a 60 FPS native result are not interchangeable measures of rendering capability.
How much faster should you expect in common use?
The available direct test does not support one universal percentage. It does support a practical expectation: the RTX 5060 can be moderately faster in many rasterized or mixed workloads when laptop configurations are comparable, but the margin can shrink, disappear or reverse in a particular game and resolution.
1080p gaming
At 1080p, the GPU may have enough headroom that CPU speed, memory configuration and game-engine limits influence the result. In the A14 comparison, the RTX 5060 led Cyberpunk at 1080p ray-tracing ultra by about 8.8% and led Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p medium by about 15.1%. Those figures show the scale observed in those tests, not a buying guarantee.
1440p gaming
At 1440p, the additional pixel workload can expose memory, cooling and ray-tracing limits. The RTX 5060 led Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p medium by about 16.3%, yet trailed the RTX 4060 in Cyberpunk at 1440p ray-tracing ultra by about 8.3%. Both Cyberpunk results were below 15 FPS in that test, indicating that neither configuration delivered a comfortable experience at those settings without reducing the workload or using an upscaling mode.

Ray tracing
Ray tracing is particularly sensitive to game engine, resolution, quality preset and upscaling mode. Do not infer ray-tracing performance from CUDA-core count or memory type alone. Look for the exact game and settings you intend to use, ideally on the same laptop chassis or on systems with closely matched power limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is an RTX 5060 laptop worth paying more for?
The answer depends on the price gap and on whether you will use its newer features. The RTX 5060 is easier to justify when the two laptops have similar CPUs, displays, memory and build quality and the premium is modest. It is less compelling when the RTX 5060 model is a thin, low-power design while the RTX 4060 alternative has substantially better cooling or a faster processor.

Choose the RTX 5060 when
- You want DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation for supported games.
- You plan to keep the laptop for several years and prefer the newer architecture and memory technology.
- Independent testing shows a similar or higher sustained GPU power limit than the RTX 4060 model.
- The price difference is small enough that the newer features and likely performance headroom matter more than adding memory or storage to the older model.
Choose an RTX 4060 laptop when
- It is significantly cheaper and your games do not support DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation.
- The RTX 4060 machine has better cooling, a stronger CPU or a more suitable 1080p display.
- Independent tests show that the specific RTX 4060 configuration matches or exceeds the RTX 5060 system in your target games.
- You can use the savings for a larger SSD, more system memory or a better display that will improve everyday use.
Be cautious about either GPU when
- The listing does not state the GPU power limit or performance mode.
- The laptop has only 8 GB of system memory, soldered memory with no upgrade path or a display resolution that exceeds the GPU’s practical target.
- The review compares different chassis, CPUs and cooling systems but presents the result as a GPU-only difference.
A buyer’s checklist for comparing two listings
- Identify the exact GPU configuration. Record the GPU model, stated graphics power, boost range and whether the laptop has a dedicated-GPU or hybrid graphics mode.
- Match the processor. Compare the exact CPU model and its power limits. A CPU difference can affect minimum FPS and frame-time consistency.
- Check memory and storage. Prefer adequate dual-channel system memory and confirm whether upgrades are possible. Verify SSD capacity and the number of available slots.
- Match the display to your target. Compare resolution, refresh rate, response characteristics and whether the panel is driven directly by the discrete GPU.
- Find game-specific tests. Prioritize reviews using your games, resolution and settings. Treat mixed-laptop comparisons as context, not controlled GPU evidence.
- Separate feature gains from rendering gains. Note whether DLSS, frame generation, ray tracing or other quality settings were enabled.
- Compare sustained behavior. Look for long-run FPS, temperatures, fan noise and performance-mode information rather than a single short benchmark.
- Evaluate total value. Include the price difference, warranty, battery expectations, weight, ports and upgradeability—not just the GPU badge.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the model number is the whole story
“RTX 5060” and “RTX 4060” identify GPU families, but laptop implementations vary. Always record power limits and the exact chassis before comparing results.
Repeating a desktop comparison for laptops
Laptop GPUs have different power envelopes and thermal constraints from desktop cards. Desktop benchmark charts cannot be transferred directly to a laptop purchase decision.

Generated frames can make motion look smoother, but they should be reported separately from conventionally rendered frames. Check the game’s support and the base FPS.
Ignoring resolution
A result at 1080p medium does not predict a result at 1440p ray-tracing ultra. Compare like with like, and expect heavier settings to magnify differences in cooling, memory and ray-tracing workload.
Using one review as a universal ranking
The A14 results are valuable because the same general laptop family was tested with both GPUs, but they still represent two specific configurations. A separate Tom’s Guide comparison of an MSI Stealth A16 with an RTX 5060 and an Asus TUF A14 with an RTX 4060 adds context but changes the chassis and full-system configuration; it should not be treated as a controlled GPU-only test. See that additional comparison with this limitation in mind.
Practical settings guidance
For a 1080p display
Start with the game’s high preset, then adjust ray tracing and shadows based on frame-time consistency. Use ordinary DLSS upscaling when it improves performance without unacceptable image loss. Enable Multi Frame Generation only after confirming that the underlying rendered frame rate feels responsive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 1440p display
Expect to tune settings more carefully. Lower ray-tracing quality, volumetric effects and textures when memory usage or frame pacing is poor. A stable 60 FPS at sensible settings is usually a better target than an unstable headline frame rate produced by an extreme preset.
For competitive games
Prioritize low latency, a fast panel and consistent frame times. The RTX 4060 may already be sufficient at 1080p, while the RTX 5060’s newer frame-generation features may be less important than CPU performance and display behavior.
Bottom line
The RTX 5060 Laptop GPU is the stronger long-term feature choice and often the faster option, but the expected uplift is typically a variable, workload-specific advantage rather than a guaranteed headline percentage. In the published A14 comparison it won three of four listed tests, with gains ranging from a small Cyberpunk lead to a mid-teens Red Dead Redemption 2 lead, while the RTX 4060 won the 1440p Cyberpunk ray-tracing run. Compare exact laptop power, cooling, CPU, screen and price, and keep DLSS 4 generated-frame claims separate from native rendering.
