An “RTC/BIOS fix” is not one universal repair. It usually means addressing a real-time clock (RTC) or BIOS/CMOS issue—often a computer that loses its date and time, displays an RTC warning, or resets setup settings. The right next step depends on the exact message and computer model: a weak system battery is one possibility, while resetting CMOS is a separate, model-specific procedure.
What RTC/BIOS means
The real-time clock (RTC) keeps track of the computer’s date and time while the machine is off. It is supported by a motherboard battery. BIOS setup information is stored in CMOS memory, which can also hold the date, time, passwords, and configuration parameters. Because these functions overlap, people may use “RTC,” “CMOS,” and “BIOS” loosely when describing a startup warning or reset. Dell explains the RTC’s role, while ASUS describes what CMOS clearing removes.
Messages vary by manufacturer and model. Examples include “CMOS Date/Time Not Set,” “RTC Voltage Low,” or “Real-Time Clock Power Loss”; none of those phrases alone proves which component has failed. NEC notes that a depleted system-information battery can be one cause of certain RTC or CMOS errors.
What to check before trying a fix
Record the exact screen message and computer make and model. Note whether the clock resets after shutdown, after the computer is unplugged, or on every startup, and whether other BIOS settings are also lost. These clues help you choose the correct manufacturer instructions; they do not by themselves identify a failed part.

- If only the displayed time is wrong, set the clock in the operating system and check whether it stays correct through a restart. Repeated loss of time may point to an RTC power or hardware issue.
- If the computer also loses setup settings or reports a CMOS/RTC error, consult its official support page or service manual before clearing CMOS or opening the case.
- Check whether the manual identifies a replaceable system battery, its exact type, and the required service procedure. Do not assume every device uses a CR2032 or allows user replacement.
Choose the reset method specified for your model
“Reset RTC” and “clear CMOS” are manufacturer-specific operations, not interchangeable instructions for every computer. The method may be a dedicated button, jumper or pins, battery removal, or a manufacturer-defined power-button sequence. Use only the instructions for the exact computer or motherboard.

Before clearing CMOS, consider what you may need to restore. Clearing it can reset the date and time, BIOS password, and setup parameters. Depending on what you had customized, you may need to re-enter settings such as boot order or Secure Boot. Dell describes possible defaults and settings changes; ASUS summarizes the CMOS contents as “the date, time, BIOS password and BIOS setup parameters” in its support FAQ.

When a battery replacement may help
A weak or depleted system battery can cause date/time loss, but replace one only if the exact device’s documentation identifies a replaceable battery and specifies the correct type. Check the model, battery type, polarity, and service procedure before buying or installing a replacement. A CR2032 is not a universal PC battery specification.

What to do if the warning returns
If the clock or settings reset again after you followed the model’s documented procedure—or after installing a correctly specified replacement battery—stop repeating generic reset steps. The symptoms alone do not establish whether the cause is the battery, firmware, or a motherboard fault. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or seek repair support for the exact model; the available model-independent guidance cannot identify a board-level fault.
