Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want to reread dialogue and use manual saves to test consequential decisions. Choose Detroit: Become Human if you prefer an explicit flowchart and chapter-replay structure that exposes alternate endings. Neither game provides a universal, instant “undo” button for every dialogue choice. A dialogue log only lets you inspect earlier lines; actual recovery normally means loading a save or replaying a section.

Dialogue log, rewind, reload and replay are different features

RPG discussions often use “rewind” as a catch-all term, but four systems behave differently. Knowing which one a game actually provides prevents a costly mistake after an important conversation.

Dialogue history

A dialogue history, or dialogue log, records lines that have already appeared. You can reread a conversation while it is in progress, which is useful when a character gives several names, conditions or clues in quick succession. Reading the log does not change the branch you selected and does not restore an earlier state.

True rewind or choice undo

A true undo command would roll back the last decision from inside the conversation, usually without leaving the scene or loading a file. The material documented for these two games does not establish such a universal command. Do not assume that a “back” prompt, dialogue history panel or highlighted previous answer can reverse consequences.

Save and reload

Save-based recovery means creating a save before a risky conversation, making the choice, then loading that earlier save if the result is not what you wanted. It can restore a wider game state than a dialogue log, but it depends on having a usable save from the right moment. A later autosave can replace an older checkpoint, and a manual save made after the decision may preserve the unwanted outcome.

Chapter, scene or flowchart replay

Replay starts a chapter or another defined story segment again. It is designed for seeing a different branch rather than for instantly cancelling one line. Replay can be more transparent than save hunting because the game shows where the story diverges, but it may require repeating scenes before reaching the decision.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Larian explicitly documents an in-conversation dialogue-history view. Save and reload is the practical method. No dedicated one-click choice-undo command is documented. Branching choices and consequences continue through a persistent campaign. A community-maintained options reference describes an Autosave toggle after long rests and important points. Official patch notes also show continuing maintenance of save, reload and quicksave/autosave behavior. Players who want to reread lines and experiment with outcomes through saves.
Detroit: Become Human Official material emphasizes flowcharts and branching outcomes rather than a dialogue-log feature. Replay the relevant chapter or branch to discover another conclusion; an instant undo for every decision is not promised. Highly visible chapter/story branching with flowcharts that expose alternate paths. An authoritative autosave timing schedule is not stated in the cited official material. Players who want a visible map of how decisions reshape a narrative.

Baldur’s Gate 3: the stronger choice for rereading and save-based experimentation

What the dialogue history does

Larian’s Community Update #22 specifically calls out that the game lets players “look back at a dialogue history while you’re in conversation.” That solves the most common rereading problem: missing a line while deciding between responses. You can inspect what has been said, then continue from the current point.

The history is a reference tool, not a rollback tool. Once you select an answer, it can trigger a conversation branch, a reaction or a later consequence. Looking at earlier text does not select a different answer retroactively.

How recovery works in practice

For a consequential conversation, the flexible safety net is a save made before the choice. If the result is undesirable, load that save and take another route. Larian’s official patch notes include fixes involving reloading saves during dialogue and the handling of quicksaves and autosaves, which shows that save-based recovery is an actively maintained part of the game’s behavior rather than a purely theoretical workaround.

This approach is especially useful in a persistent campaign. You are not limited to a single chapter conclusion: decisions can interact with companions, quests and later scenes. The trade-off is management. You must recognize a risky moment, keep a pre-choice save, and avoid loading the wrong file.

Autosave information and its limits

A community-maintained options reference documents an Autosave toggle associated with long rests and important points. That is useful operational guidance: enabling the setting can provide checkpoints around major progress. It is not an independently tested guarantee that every dialogue option, every combat result or every consequence will receive its own checkpoint. The documented triggers also do not define how many autosaves are retained or how long a particular checkpoint remains available.

For decisions you cannot afford to lose, treat autosave as a supplement to a deliberate manual save. The safest pattern is a manual save immediately before the conversation, followed by a separate save after a satisfactory outcome.

A practical BG3 routine

  1. Pause before a high-stakes conversation. If the dialogue can alter a companion relationship, quest or access to a location, make a named manual save before selecting an answer.
  2. Use the dialogue-history view when you lose a detail. Reread the preceding lines instead of guessing at a response.
  3. Commit to the choice and observe the result. The history helps comprehension; it does not preview every downstream effect.
  4. Reload the pre-choice save if necessary. Select the earlier file rather than a newer autosave created after the consequence.
  5. Keep a post-choice save when you are satisfied. This gives you a forward checkpoint while preserving the option to revisit the decision.

Where BG3 falls short

  • There is no documented universal button that reverses any dialogue decision in place.
  • A dialogue log cannot restore a lost state or erase a consequence.
  • Autosave trigger information is operational rather than a reliability guarantee, and it does not promise a checkpoint for every conversation line.
  • Save/reload can return you to an earlier state, but only if the needed save still exists.

Detroit: Become Human: the stronger choice for visible branch discovery

Flowcharts are the central review tool

Quantic Dream describes the game as one in which “Every choice you make affects the outcome of the game, with one of the most intricately branching narratives ever created.” Its official presentation centers on chapter flowcharts and alternate outcomes rather than an in-conversation dialogue log. That makes the branching structure visible: after a chapter, you can see that choices opened some nodes and left others undiscovered.

The official page also says, “No playthrough will be exactly the same: replay again and again to discover a totally different conclusion.” Replay is therefore part of the design, not merely an emergency recovery technique. You are expected to revisit chapters, make a different decision and follow the resulting path.

What replay can and cannot do

Chapter replay lets you investigate a different branch without treating the whole story as a single opaque save file. It does not amount to an instant undo in the middle of a conversation. You must restart the relevant story segment and reach the decision again, then watch how the flowchart changes.

The flowchart is valuable when your question is “What would happen if I had chosen the other option?” It shows the narrative topology more clearly than a collection of manually named saves. It is less convenient when your question is “Can I go back one line and continue from there?” The documented feature set does not promise that kind of fine-grained rewind.

Autosave expectations

No authoritative autosave schedule is stated in the cited official material. You should therefore avoid assuming that a particular dialogue choice has a recoverable checkpoint, that every scene is saved at the same point, or that an older state can always be restored. The reliable, documented safety net for exploring alternatives is chapter replay and the resulting flowchart, not a published autosave timetable.

A practical Detroit routine

  1. Finish the first pass naturally. The branching system is designed to record the path you actually took.
  2. Inspect the chapter flowchart. Use it to identify an unresolved node or a decision that produced an unwanted result.
  3. Replay the relevant chapter. Start far enough before the decision to allow the branch to be reached normally.
  4. Choose a different response or action. Follow the new path rather than expecting the old scene to be overwritten by a single undo command.
  5. Compare the newly revealed outcome. The flowchart makes the newly discovered branch visible and helps you select the next chapter to revisit.

Which recovery model matches your play style?

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when rereading is the priority

BG3 is the better fit if you frequently miss spoken or written details and want to inspect them without leaving the conversation. It also suits players who enjoy testing consequences in a persistent campaign and are willing to maintain manual saves. The combination of a documented dialogue-history view and save/reload flexibility covers both comprehension and experimentation.

Choose Detroit: Become Human when branch visibility is the priority

Detroit is the better fit if your main goal is to see how a decision changes the story and to pursue alternate conclusions deliberately. Its flowchart and chapter-replay structure turn the narrative into a map of discovered and undiscovered routes. You trade fine-grained recovery for a more explicit replay model.

Choose neither on the assumption of a universal undo button

If you require a guaranteed one-click reversal of every dialogue answer, neither documented feature set meets that requirement. BG3 relies on saves for recovery; Detroit relies on replaying branches. A dialogue history, where available, answers “What was said?” rather than “Can I cancel what I chose?”

How to judge autosave reliability without being misled by the label

“Autosave” is not a complete specification. Compare the trigger, the timing and the recovery scope.

  • Trigger: Is a checkpoint associated with a long rest, an important point, a chapter boundary or another event?
  • Timing: Does it occur before the risky decision, after it, or at an unspecified point?
  • Retention: How many earlier checkpoints remain available? A schedule alone does not answer this.
  • Scope: Does loading the checkpoint restore the whole campaign state, a chapter, or only the latest scene?
  • Authority: Is the information published by the developer, or is it a community-maintained reference that should be treated as guidance?

On the evidence available here, BG3 has useful community-documented triggers and official evidence that save/reload behavior receives maintenance. Detroit has an official replay model but no stated authoritative autosave schedule. That difference is why “reliable autosaves” should not be treated as a simple yes-or-no game feature.

Common mistakes and safer habits

Mistake: treating a dialogue log as an undo

Reading a previous line can clarify context, but it cannot reverse the selected answer. If the outcome matters, create a save before the conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: relying on the newest autosave

A checkpoint created after a consequence may preserve the very state you wanted to avoid. Keep a separate manual save before a high-stakes decision, especially in BG3 where save/reload is the practical recovery method.

Mistake: expecting Detroit’s flowchart to skip directly to one sentence

The flowchart reveals branches, while chapter replay takes you back through the relevant segment. Plan to replay the chapter far enough before the decision to reach the alternate node.

Mistake: assuming an undocumented schedule

Do not infer that every conversation is autosaved at the same moment. For Detroit, no authoritative timing schedule is stated; for BG3, the published trigger detail comes from a community-maintained reference and should be treated as guidance rather than a guarantee.

Bottom line

For rereading dialogue and trying different consequences with the least friction, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the practical recommendation: it has an explicitly documented conversation history, and manual save/reload gives you a flexible recovery path. For a story built around seeing the shape of every branch, Detroit: Become Human is the better recommendation: its flowcharts and chapter replay make alternate conclusions visible. In both games, protect important decisions with the recovery model they actually provide—saves in BG3, replay in Detroit—not with the expectation of a universal instant undo.
