Some role-playing games keep their challenge alive by making enemies and encounters scale with your progress. You may gain levels, better equipment and new abilities, yet foes can rise with you, appear in tougher variants, arrive in larger groups or impose stricter combat rules. The result is not that your character stops improving; rather, the game continually adjusts the opposition so older areas and late campaigns remain dangerous.
What “getting stronger makes the game harder” actually means
Enemy scaling is broader than simply giving every monster more health. A game can scale several different parts of an encounter:
- Statistics: enemy level, damage, health, armor or resistance rises with the player.
- Abilities and affixes: enemies gain new attacks, modifiers or behavioral rules.
- Encounter composition: tougher variants replace ordinary enemies, or more enemies appear together.
- Pacing and pressure: waves become denser, timers become tighter or hazards intensify during a mission.
- Rewards: loot may improve alongside danger—or fail to do so, making progression feel harsher.
Scaling can happen continuously, when you enter an area, or at explicit difficulty steps. The important question is whether new builds, knowledge and tools still create a meaningful advantage after the opposition changes.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion — direct level scaling
Oblivion is the clearest canonical example of level scaling. Its documented system makes enemies stronger as the player levels, while loot also becomes more effective. The design goal was to preserve a steady, moderate challenge throughout the game instead of allowing early areas to become permanently trivial.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The system also demonstrates the main risk. Skills can increase involuntarily through ordinary play, raising the character’s level faster than intended. If enemy strength follows that level while the player’s build has not gained equivalent combat effectiveness, encounters can become disproportionately difficult. In other words, scaling can preserve tension but expose weaknesses in how a character was developed.
Echoes of Aincrad — rising enemy levels and unenhanced drops
Echoes of Aincrad combines rising enemy levels with weapons that do not arrive enhanced. Bandai Namco’s official guide states: “However, because dropped weapons are unenhanced, progression will become increasingly difficult as enemy levels rise.” That is a particularly clear case of the player’s numerical progress failing to translate into an equally large increase in practical power.

On the demanding setting, the guide says players must build appropriately for each quest level and use mechanics such as items, dodging and guarding. Success therefore depends on preparation and execution, not only on accumulating levels. Better decisions can offset the pressure, but ignoring quest-level requirements makes later progress steadily more difficult.

New World — affixes and combat rules instead of simple stat inflation
New World shows how scaling can change what enemies do. Official release notes describe elite and champion enemies receiving one to three affixes that alter their attacks and characteristics according to difficulty and level. These modifiers can force a different response from the player rather than merely extending the time required to defeat an enemy.

The same notes state that enemies at least ten levels above the player are not staggered by the player. That rule changes the value of familiar tactics: attacks that normally interrupt an enemy no longer provide the same safety margin against a sufficiently higher-level opponent. The difficulty increase is therefore partly mechanical and behavioral.
ARK — an uneven power gap
In ARK, higher difficulty changes the power of available creatures and tames. The environment can become stronger faster than the player, widening the gap between a developing survivor and the threats around them. However, the scaling is not uniform: some threats, including certain bosses, do not increase significantly.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This unevenness matters when judging whether the game gets harder as you progress. A player may face increasingly dangerous ordinary creatures while a particular boss remains comparatively fixed. The result is a shifting difficulty curve rather than a single multiplier applied to every opponent.

Not every creature scales. Some remain unaffected, which prevents the experience from becoming a uniform increase in enemy durability. Because composition and pacing change, players may need to prioritize targets, move earlier or manage resources differently even when individual enemy statistics have not simply doubled.

| Game | Primary scaling method | When or where it appears | Reward relationship | What remains fixed or uneven |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oblivion | Enemy levels, statistics and loot effectiveness | Tracks character level across the world | Loot becomes more effective as enemies strengthen | Skill-driven leveling can create an unintended difficulty spike |
| Echoes of Aincrad | Enemy-level growth combined with unenhanced weapon drops | Quest progression and demanding difficulty | Dropped weapons are unenhanced | Build quality, guarding, dodging and item use remain decisive |
| New World | Elite and champion affixes; anti-stagger rule at a level gap | Difficulty and enemy level | Specific reward scaling is not stated | Combat behavior changes rather than only health and damage |
| ARK | Creature and tame power | Higher difficulty settings | Power gap can widen as difficulty rises | Some threats and certain bosses do not scale significantly |
| Deep Rock Galactic | Enemy count, wave points, veteran chance and timed pressure | Mission difficulty and, for Point Extraction, elapsed time | Specific reward scaling is not stated | Some creatures do not scale at all |
Why designers use scaling—and why players dislike it
Scaling keeps a long campaign from making its opening regions irrelevant. It can let players choose routes more freely, preserve suspense when revisiting familiar locations and prevent a single level threshold from trivializing the rest of the game. It also gives designers room to support different play speeds: a player who explores extensively does not necessarily outlevel every future encounter.
The trade-off is psychological. Traditional RPG progression promises that numbers and equipment will make previously dangerous situations easier. If enemy growth tracks those gains too closely, the player may feel that leveling only maintains the status quo. The problem becomes sharper when scaling is opaque, when rewards do not improve with danger, or when automatic skill increases produce a level the build cannot support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGood scaling leaves room for mastery. A stronger build should clear encounters faster, survive mistakes more often or unlock tactics that were previously impossible, even if the game introduces stronger opposition. Systems that add affixes, enemy combinations or time pressure can preserve that advantage better than systems that only multiply health.
How to approach these games
- Check the level relationship before committing to a fight. A large level gap may disable familiar mechanics, as with the anti-stagger rule described for New World.
- Build for the current quest or mission tier. In Echoes of Aincrad, unenhanced drops mean that equipment choices and defensive mechanics matter as enemy levels rise.
- Watch encounter composition, not just enemy health. In Deep Rock Galactic, additional enemies, veteran variants and wave pressure can determine survival.
- Identify what does not scale. Fixed creatures, bosses or rewards create opportunities to plan around the uneven parts of a system, as in ARK.
- Treat automatic leveling cautiously. In Oblivion, gaining levels through skills without a combat-ready build can make the next scaling step much harder.
The practical takeaway
“Getting stronger makes the game harder” usually means that enemy or encounter growth follows character progression; it does not mean the player receives no power. Oblivion uses direct level scaling, Echoes of Aincrad pairs rising enemy levels with unenhanced drops, New World changes enemy abilities and combat rules, ARK creates an uneven creature power gap, and Deep Rock Galactic increases density, variant chances and pacing pressure. Across all five, the fairest systems are those in which better builds and better play still produce a visible advantage.
