Some RPGs are more fun when you can get into the story before you have to master the system. That doesn’t make you an idiot. It means you’d rather spend your attention on characters, exploration, or the next dice roll than on memorizing a dense ruleset.

The title is a joke about friction, not intelligence. A game’s difficulty depends partly on the person playing it and partly on the barriers the game creates. The right amount of complexity is therefore personal: less can make it easier to begin, while more can give experienced players room to experiment.

Why less friction can make an RPG more fun

“The level of difficulty that a player experiences isn’t defined by the game,” says Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108. A system that feels intuitive to one player may overwhelm another, depending on what each person already knows and which obstacles the game puts in the way.

In an RPG, friction can come from many places: rules to memorize, several systems to track at once, unclear explanations, or decisions that arrive before you understand their consequences. If that effort gets between you and the parts you enjoy, wanting a simpler path is reasonable—not a verdict on your ability.

  • TRAVEL THROUGH A MAGICAL LAND: The generously sized board depicts the land of Talisman, 3 regions of enchanted locations. The board changes as players layer on Adventure cards with more places to encounter

Simple controls, fewer rules, and accessibility are related, but they are not interchangeable. A short rulebook can still be confusing; a complex game can still explain itself well and offer useful options. What matters is how the game teaches you and which demands it asks you to manage.

Digital RPGs: look for the obstacle you want to change

Difficulty is not one single dial. Microsoft’s guidance identifies areas such as combat, puzzles, memory, survival meters, and progression as possible sources of challenge. A setting that reduces combat pressure will not necessarily make puzzles easier or remove the need to manage resources.

When a game offers separate options, adjust the part that is blocking your enjoyment rather than assuming you must lower every challenge. If you want to focus on the story but dislike demanding fights, a combat setting may help. If you enjoy tactical battles but get stuck on puzzles, look for a puzzle option instead. The available controls vary by game; there is no universal menu path or set of difficulty labels.

Changing difficulty does not automatically remove challenge. It can shift effort away from a barrier that feels tedious and preserve the parts you want to engage with. If the game offers only a single difficulty setting, consider whether its other options—such as hints or assistance—address the specific obstacle you have.

Tabletop RPGs: the rulebook is part of the game

At a table, there may be no setting that quietly reduces rules overhead. Learning depends more on how the rulebook is written and organized, how a facilitator introduces the system, and how many rules the group needs to hold in mind during play.

A 2025 paper by C. Casimiro, Michael Heron, and Carla Sousa frames rulebook accessibility as a question of cognitive load: the effort a reader must spend understanding material and using it in play. If a new player struggles, that difficulty may reflect what the rules expect them to know or keep track of—not a personal shortcoming.

  • SOLVE FANTASTICAL PUZZLES: Don’t split the party. Work together to decipher puzzles, from wordplay problems to multi-card visual riddles. Solve them to unlock new items, locations, and clues
  • DYNAMIC GAMEBOARD: Players move their figures around the board exploring Neverwinter. The board builds and changes, revealing mysterious places and clues as players solve puzzles that unlock locations

The authors’ recommendations are a conceptual contribution, and they say they still need validation with diverse players in real settings. The paper does not establish that a particular game or book is beginner-friendly. When choosing a rules-light tabletop RPG book, or learning from one you already own, look for clear explanations, well-organized rules, and examples that show how play works. A facilitator who introduces rules as they become relevant can also reduce the amount everyone has to learn upfront.

Simple enough to start, deep enough to explore

Less complexity is a tradeoff, not a universal upgrade. In “The Grand Experiment” (2020), Wizards of the Coast designer Mark Rosewater describes the aim as “finding the right middle ground where the game is simple enough for new players to learn the gameplay and complex enough for ample exploration by the experienced players.” The challenge for a designer is to make learning manageable without removing the depth that players value.

  • THE ADULT VERSION OF CLUE YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR: Lie to your friends, get away with murder! The Clue Conspiracy game is a secret role strategy game of shifting suspicions—with a party vibe! Ages 14+. For 4-10 players
  • AN ISLAND SETTING, A NEW VICTIM: You're invited to the tropical Black Adder Resort, where a guest (maybe even you!) is trying to murder its manager, Mr. Coral. Deadly traps are spread throughout the resort grounds—and someone is armed
  • PLAY ON SECRET TEAMS: Players play as Clue characters and take on secret roles on opposing teams: Friends vs. the Conspiracy. Friends try to keep Mr. Coral alive, while Conspiracy members secretly try to set up his murder
  • WHO CAN YOU TRUST?: Lie, bluff, sabotage! In this mystery game, it's all about mind games as players conspire, gather clues, share info (or not), and call each other out to stop the other side
  • MULTIPLE WAYS TO WIN: The Conspiracy wins by pulling off the murder Plot at a specific location or secretly sabotaging and setting off traps. The Friends win by disarming all the traps, or if that fails, solving the WHO, WHERE, and WHAT of the secret Plot

That balance is personal, too. You might want fewer rules to memorize but still enjoy building a character over time. You might prefer straightforward combat but love choices with lasting story consequences. “Easy to learn” does not have to mean “nothing to master,” and “rules-light” does not guarantee a clear or welcoming experience.

Figure out which complexity you want less of

Before dismissing a game as too complicated—or looking for a simpler one—pinpoint what is demanding your attention. These questions can help:

  • Learning effort: Are you spending too long understanding the basic rules before play gets going?
  • Tracking: Are many resources, statuses, or interacting systems hard to keep in mind?
  • Decision load: Do you face too many consequential choices at once, or do you want more options to explore?
  • Challenge type: Is combat the problem, or is it puzzles, memory, survival pressure, or progression?
  • Desired depth: Which kinds of mastery, experimentation, or character development do you still enjoy?

Your answers can guide the next step: use a game’s specific difficulty options, ask a tabletop group to teach rules gradually, or choose a system whose learning demands better match the kind of play you want. The goal isn’t to prove you can handle every mechanic. It’s to spend your attention on the parts of an RPG that make you want to keep playing.
