Party approval, loyalty quests, and romance are related but different systems. Approval is the ongoing reaction to what you say and do; a loyalty or personal quest is a character-specific test with possible story or gameplay rewards; romance adds optional intimacy gates on top of relationship progress. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the clearest example of a visible, reactive approval model, Mass Effect shows how loyalty missions can unlock mechanical benefits, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard makes romance a broad early option followed by a commitment choice.

The short answer: which companion system is best?

There is no universal winner because each system solves a different design problem. Choose a game with explicit approval when you want immediate feedback and party banter that reacts to everyday decisions. Choose a loyalty-quest-heavy game when you want each companion’s personal crisis to become a substantial mission with consequences. Choose a romance-focused design when you want optional relationships to add dialogue, gifts, and exclusive scenes rather than merely change combat statistics.

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the most transparent combination: companions react to dialogue, quests, combat choices, and faction decisions; approval can alter dialogue, persuasion difficulty, personal-quest outcomes, romance access, and whether a companion remains in the party. Mass Effect is the useful comparison for loyalty missions because scholarly analysis of the series identifies loyalty quests as a route from relationship progress to hidden ability unlocks. Dragon Age: The Veilguard emphasizes romance breadth and a later commitment lock: Electronic Arts’ 2026 guide states that all seven companions can be romantic partners, while the player can pursue several initially before committing to one.

Three systems that are often confused

Party approval or affinity

Approval is a running relationship signal. The game records whether a companion tends to agree with your choices, and that state influences future conversations or gates. A visible meter is only one implementation. Some role-playing games show numbers, some use labels such as friendly or loyal, and others reveal affinity only through changed dialogue, quest availability, or party behavior.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, approval changes through conversations, quests, combat decisions, and faction choices. The BG3 Wiki’s 2026 reference lists typical event changes of ±1 for a small reaction, ±5 for a medium event, and ±10 for a large event, with a maximum approval value of 100. Those figures apply to Baldur’s Gate 3, not to RPGs generally.

Loyalty or personal quests

A loyalty quest is a companion-centered mission built around a concrete problem from that character’s history, values, or obligations. It is not simply another point on an approval meter: the quest asks you to act when the companion’s interests are at stake. Bethesda’s support guidance describes a unique personal quest as a way to establish a deeper bond. In the Mass Effect model, the quest also has mechanical weight; scholarly analysis describes loyalty missions as converting relationship progress into hidden ability unlocks.

Romance options

Romance normally sits on top of affinity rather than replacing it. A game may require a minimum relationship state, a particular conversation, completion of a personal quest, or a commitment decision. Romance can add dialogue and intimate scenes, reveal more of a companion’s perspective, and alter later quest context. Electronic Arts’ 2026 Veilguard guide describes romance as a path built through flirtatious quips, siding with a companion, joining their quests, and buying gifts.

How approval systems work in practice

Baldur’s Gate 3: an explicit, reactive model

Baldur’s Gate 3 gives the player unusually direct cause and effect. A dialogue answer, a decision during a quest, a combat action, or support for a faction can move a companion’s approval. The accumulated state then affects more than camp conversation.

  • Dialogue: approval can open, close, or alter companion conversations and personal-quest exchanges.
  • Persuasion: relationship state can affect persuasion difficulty, so a companion who trusts you may be easier to convince.
  • Personal quests: approval can change how a companion’s quest resolves and which outcomes are available.
  • Romance: companion-specific approval thresholds help determine when a romance can start or continue.
  • Party stability: sufficiently poor relationships can contribute to a companion leaving the party.

Because the scale has a stated maximum of 100 and events commonly move it by ±1, ±5, or ±10, a single disagreement rarely defines the entire relationship. Large decisions can, however, produce a meaningful swing, and several choices that conflict with a companion’s values can accumulate.

Larian described its goal in a 2020 community update as offering “authentic, reactive relationships from the moment you meet, to whatever eventuality.” That design explains why approval is not merely a romance score: it is a party-management signal that can affect ordinary adventuring as well as optional intimacy.

Bethesda’s broader affinity pattern

Bethesda’s support guidance presents affinity as a set of actions rather than one universal meter. The guidance recommends completing quests with the companion active, finishing a unique personal quest when one exists, speaking with the companion regularly, using the Paramour aid item, or equipping the Leadership Social skill.

This list shows why title and edition matter. The guidance identifies ways to build affinity, but it does not establish one identical numerical scale or romance rule for every Bethesda game. Treat the exact companion perks, labels, and romance gates as title-specific rather than transferring them from one game to another.

Why loyalty quests feel different from approval points

A relationship test with a concrete problem

Approval can change because of dozens of small moments. A loyalty quest concentrates the relationship into a defined dilemma: a debt, an old enemy, a family obligation, a political cause, or a personal belief that conflicts with the party’s goals. The companion is no longer reacting to a generic heroic or selfish choice; the decision is about them.

Narrative stakes and mechanical stakes

Personal quests can reveal backstory and change later dialogue even when they do not grant a visible reward. The Mass Effect design is notable because loyalty missions can also unlock hidden abilities. Completing the mission therefore has two outcomes: the companion becomes more fully characterized, and the party may gain a combat capability that would not otherwise be available.

Do not assume every game uses that structure. A personal quest may deepen a bond without unlocking an ability, or it may influence an ending without changing the character sheet. The reliable comparison is the role of the quest: it converts a general relationship signal into a focused decision with consequences.

How romance is layered onto companion relationships

Common gates

Romance systems usually combine several conditions instead of checking approval alone:

  • A minimum approval or affinity state.
  • A flirtatious or otherwise explicit dialogue choice.
  • Progress in the companion’s personal quest.
  • Presence on particular missions or at a specific story point.
  • A commitment conversation that ends other romance paths.

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses companion-specific approval thresholds for starting or continuing romances, so high approval with one character does not automatically make every romance available. The exact threshold and dialogue sequence are character-specific.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: broad access, then commitment

Electronic Arts’ 2026 romance guide says all seven companions are possible romantic partners. The guide identifies flirtatious quips, siding with a companion, accompanying them on quests, and purchasing gifts as ways to build the relationship. Players can pursue multiple companions initially, but the story eventually requires a commitment to one.

That structure differs from a system that asks you to choose one romance at the start. It lets you explore compatibility while the relationships develop, then makes exclusivity a deliberate story decision. The seven-companion rule belongs to The Veilguard; it should not be generalized to every Dragon Age installment.

Can you disagree with a companion and keep them loyal?

Usually, yes, if the disagreement is isolated and the game evaluates the whole relationship rather than one line of dialogue. In a system such as Baldur’s Gate 3, a small disapproval event may be only −1, while a major decision can be −5 or −10. You can offset an unpopular choice with later support, favorable quest decisions, and time spent adventuring together.

There are limits. Repeatedly opposing a companion’s core values can lower approval enough to close romance dialogue, change personal-quest outcomes, or trigger a departure in games that support party exits. A companion may also object to a single high-stakes decision more strongly than to routine disagreements. The practical rule is to distinguish a recoverable difference of opinion from a choice that violates the character’s central goal.

When disagreement is strategically useful

Disagreement can produce information. A companion’s objection identifies a value conflict, and the resulting conversation may reveal what future choices will matter. You do not need to select every option that earns approval; doing so can flatten the role-playing premise. Instead, decide which relationships and quest outcomes matter to your character, then accept smaller losses when they fit the story you are playing.

Choosing the right system for your play style

If you want visible feedback

Prefer an explicit approval model. You can connect a choice to a reaction and plan around thresholds for dialogue, persuasion, romance, or party retention. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest example in this comparison because its approval events and maximum value are documented and its effects extend across party life.

If you want character-focused missions

Prioritize games with substantial loyalty or personal quests. The key question is not how many companion missions exist, but whether each mission presents a problem that belongs specifically to that character and changes what happens afterward.

If you want romance variety

Check three details before committing to a game: who is romanceable, whether multiple romances can begin, and when exclusivity is enforced. The Veilguard combines broad access—seven possible partners according to Electronic Arts—with a later commitment choice. Other games may restrict romance by character, protagonist identity, timing, or quest order.

If you prefer role-playing without meters

Look for affinity communicated through conversation, gifts, quest availability, or party behavior. A hidden or label-based system can feel more natural, but it gives you less numerical certainty. Bethesda’s guidance illustrates this broader approach by listing several affinity-building actions without presenting one universal scale for every title.

A practical companion-management checklist

  1. Read the reaction. After a major dialogue or quest choice, note which companions support or challenge it.
  2. Keep key companions active. If affinity depends on shared quests, bring the relevant character when you expect a decision tied to their history.
  3. Advance personal quests. Treat companion missions as relationship tests, not optional errands, especially when they may affect abilities or later outcomes.
  4. Use direct conversation. Speak with companions regularly; some systems make conversation itself part of affinity growth.
  5. Separate romance from friendship. Do not assume approval automatically means romance. Look for an explicit flirtation or commitment choice.
  6. Record irreversible decisions. Before a major faction or companion quest choice, make a manual save if the game allows it.
  7. Accept controlled disagreement. Preserve your character concept while avoiding a long sequence of choices that attack one companion’s core values.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every game has a visible score

Some systems expose a number; others use categories, relationship labels, or changed scenes. If the interface does not show a meter, judge progress by new dialogue, quest invitations, gifts, and party reactions rather than searching for a universal percentage.

Expecting one approval rule to apply across a series

Even within a franchise, romance gates, companion availability, and personal-quest rewards can change between installments. The Veilguard rule that all seven companions are romanceable is specific to that game’s 2026 guide, not a statement about the entire Dragon Age series. Bethesda’s affinity advice likewise describes a model, not a guarantee for every title.

Treating romance as the only reward

Approval can alter persuasion difficulty, personal-quest outcomes, and party retention even when no romance is involved. Loyalty quests can reveal backstory or unlock abilities. A companion system is doing more work than its romance scenes alone suggest.

Chasing approval at the expense of the protagonist

Maximizing every relationship can turn choices into bookkeeping. The strongest systems leave room for principled disagreement, then make the consequences legible enough for you to decide whether a relationship, quest outcome, or romance is worth changing course.

What to verify before starting a romance

  • Which companions are eligible in the specific game and edition.
  • Whether approval or affinity has a threshold, and whether the game displays it.
  • Which personal quests must be completed first.
  • Whether gifts, flirtation, or mission participation are required inputs.
  • When a commitment decision becomes irreversible.
  • What happens if approval falls later: altered scenes, a romance lockout, or party departure.

These checks prevent the most common disappointment: reaching a high relationship state but missing a required conversation or quest flag. They also clarify what “best companion system” means for you—transparent reactivity, consequential personal missions, or flexible romance progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Approval is the ongoing signal, loyalty quests are the focused test, and romance is the optional layer that turns relationship progress into intimacy and exclusive content. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best fit for players who value visible, party-wide reactions; Mass Effect demonstrates why loyalty missions matter when they unlock abilities; and Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the clearest example here of broad romance access followed by a commitment choice. You can disagree with companions and remain loyal in systems that weigh the full relationship, but repeated conflicts with a character’s core values can still close dialogue, romance, quest outcomes, or party membership.
