RPG companion approval is usually a hidden or visible relationship value tracked separately for each companion. Your dialogue, quest decisions, gifts, romance choices and other actions move that relationship according to the companion’s personality. Morality is the belief system those reactions express, while loyalty is a game-specific trust or commitment state that can unlock content or determine whether a companion stays. Party banter is authored dialogue released when relationship, travel and story conditions are met.
There is no universal approval formula or loyalty threshold. The useful way to read any game is to check five things: whether scores are visible, what the score applies to, which actions change it, how disagreement works, and what consequences follow.
What a companion approval system actually tracks
Approval is normally a relationship, not a morality meter
In most party-based RPGs, approval belongs to a particular companion. A decision that delights one character can irritate another because each person evaluates the same event through a different history, culture or goal. The result is a relationship state between the player character and that companion, rather than one universal measure of whether the player is behaving well.

GetApprovalRating reads a rating, while ChangeApprovalRating changes the value between the character who owns the rating (typically the companion) and the character being rated (typically the player). The direction matters: a companion’s opinion of you is not automatically the same as your opinion of that companion, and it is not a party-wide score.

Why there is no single RPG formula
Each game chooses its own event weights, thresholds, labels and consequences. One title may show a numerical bar; another may communicate approval only through dialogue. Some systems change the value after a conversation, while others also react to quest outcomes, gifts, travel, combat decisions or romance scenes. A guide that gives one “correct” approval formula for all RPGs is therefore misleading.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | What it changes for the player |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Does the game show a bar, a label or only dialogue cues? | You may be able to plan around a score, or you may need to infer reactions from behavior. |
| Scope | Is the value per companion, per faction or global? | A decision can affect one relationship, a group or the whole setting. |
| Triggers | Which actions move it? | Dialogue, quest outcomes, gifts, travel, combat and romance can be separate inputs. |
| Disagreement model | Can companions dislike a choice while remaining friends? | The system may support believable conflict instead of forcing universal approval. |
| Consequences | What does the state unlock or block? | Effects can include banter, romance, personal quests, combat support, betrayal or departure. |
Approval, morality and loyalty are different systems
Companion approval
Approval answers “How does this companion currently feel about my character?” It can rise and fall repeatedly. A companion might approve of your compassion in one quest, disapprove of a later compromise, then recover after a conversation or a gift that fits their personality.
Morality and ethical choice
Morality is the value framework behind a reaction: a companion may prize mercy, order, freedom, survival, faith or personal honor. Some RPGs also add a global ethical or reputation layer that summarizes the player’s conduct for factions or the wider world. That global layer is not the same as every companion’s opinion. Bethesda’s support guidance describes the broad pattern: moral and ethical choices can affect relationships with allies and can sometimes create lasting consequences, without claiming that every game uses a numeric morality scale.

Loyalty or bond
Loyalty is a game-specific trust or commitment outcome. It may be derived from approval, tracked separately, or represented through a sequence of personal quests. A loyal companion can unlock a final personal scene, a special ability, romance content or a commitment to remain with the party. A high approval rating does not automatically mean that the game has a separate loyalty variable.

How player choices change companion relationships
Dialogue and quest outcomes
Conversation choices are the most legible trigger because they let the game attach a reaction directly to a line. Quest outcomes can have larger effects: sparing an enemy, supporting one faction, taking a reward or breaking a promise may express the values a companion cares about. The same outcome can produce opposite reactions in different companions.
Gifts are personality tests, not universal bribes
The Dragon Age: Origins review presented at GDC describes gifts that raise loyalty or approval when they suit a companion. The important qualification is “when they fit.” A gift system is authored around character preferences, so handing every item to the same person is not a reliable strategy. Treat gifts as signals about what the companion values, and expect an unsuitable present to have little effect or a negative one when the game supports that reaction.
Romance choices can be a separate gate
EA’s official Veilguard romance guide states that how the player interacts with a companion determines romance access, and that romance offers deeper connections and additional dialogue. This demonstrates a common design distinction: a relationship or bond state can gate romance without being identical to a general morality meter. Flirting, commitment and personal boundaries may therefore be evaluated by dedicated conditions in addition to ordinary approval.

A strong system permits disagreement while preserving a believable relationship. A companion can object to one decision, argue in camp and still support the player later if the broader relationship remains intact. Games that treat every negative reaction as a permanent break reduce companions to approval dispensers; games that let reactions accumulate can portray changing, imperfect friendships.

What happens when approval gets very high or very low
Content can open gradually
Approval and bond states commonly unlock additional dialogue, personal scenes and romance. These rewards are not merely cosmetic: they reveal a companion’s history, clarify their motives and can change how later choices are understood. Because the gates are authored, the same approval value may unlock different content for different characters.
Low approval can become a permanent departure
The GDC review of Dragon Age: Origins reports that if a companion’s approval falls too low and cannot be repaired, “they will leave the party for the rest of the game.” This is a consequential design choice, not a universal RPG rule. Other games may use a warning conversation, a temporary absence, a betrayal scene or no departure at all. Do not assume a numeric threshold from one title applies to another.
Consequences may be social or mechanical
Possible results include altered combat support, a refusal to follow a plan, a personal quest, a romance opportunity, a betrayal or permanent loss of the companion. The game’s interface may never announce which consequence is approaching. Watch for changes in dialogue tone, camp conversations and quest availability rather than waiting for a single pop-up.

How party banter is triggered
Banter is authored reactivity
Party banter is not simply random chatter. Writers create exchanges for specific companion combinations, locations, story states and relationship conditions. The system then releases those exchanges when their prerequisites are satisfied. Banter can build world knowledge, expose conflict and make party composition feel meaningful.

Story and relationship progress unlocks more scenes
BioWare’s developer explanation for Dragon Age: Inquisition says additional banter can be unlocked by “talking to your party members, playing through their personal plots, and advancing the main story.” This places banter in the same progression loop as companion approval: use the party, pursue personal content and move the main plot forward to open more authored reactions.
Why a conversation may not appear immediately
If two companions are silent, check the conditions the game makes visible before assuming the system is broken:
- Confirm that both companions are currently in the active party if the exchange requires that pairing.
- Speak with companions in their personal conversation locations and complete available personal-plot steps.
- Advance the main story when new narrative chapters are required.
- Travel through areas where party dialogue is enabled; a banter scene may be tied to movement rather than standing in a hub.
- Allow the current conversation to finish before changing zones or replacing a companion.
These checks do not guarantee a scene, because each game can impose additional conditions, but they target the documented unlock pattern instead of treating banter as a purely random event.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReading an approval system when the score is hidden
Use reactions as evidence
When no bar or number is shown, treat repeated dialogue cues as your interface. A companion who comments positively on a type of decision, volunteers personal information or offers new conversation topics is giving stronger evidence than a single neutral line. Keep notes by companion if you are pursuing a particular relationship, since one character’s reaction does not predict another’s.

Separate immediate approval from long-term trust
An angry response to one decision does not prove that loyalty is lost. Conversely, a friendly conversation does not prove that a companion will remain available during a later crisis. Look for explicit commitment scenes, personal-quest outcomes or warnings about leaving before treating a relationship as secure.

| Game or source | Documented mechanic | What the example demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Age: Origins, GDC review | Player actions change approval; suitable gifts can raise loyalty or approval; very low unrepaired approval can make a companion leave permanently. | Approval can be reactive, personality-specific and consequential. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian modding reference | GetApprovalRating reads a rating, and ChangeApprovalRating changes the value between an owning character and a rated character. |
The relationship is directional and character-specific rather than one party-wide number. |
| Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare developer explanation | Additional banter is unlocked by party conversations, personal plots and main-story advancement. | Banter is tied to continued party use and narrative progression. |
| Veilguard, EA romance guide | Interactions determine romance access; romance adds deeper connections and dialogue. | Relationship states can gate narrative content without being a global morality meter. |

A practical playbook for players
- Choose the relationship you are prioritizing. Decide whether you want a companion’s personal story, romance, combat support or simply a stable party. Different goals can require different choices.
- Learn the companion’s values through conversation. Ask about their history and motives before making a major decision. Their answers reveal the beliefs likely to drive approval reactions.
- Keep the relevant companion present. If a game evaluates party reactions, an absent companion cannot respond to the event or contribute banter. Rotate deliberately when pursuing multiple personal plots.
- Use gifts selectively. Give items that clearly fit the character rather than distributing valuables at random. Dragon Age: Origins specifically documents personality-sensitive gift effects.
- Advance personal plots and the main story. These steps can unlock relationship scenes and additional banter, as documented for Dragon Age: Inquisition.
- Save before irreversible decisions when the game permits it. This is especially useful in systems where a very low approval state can cause a permanent departure. Do not assume every game offers a repair path.
- Watch for explicit warnings. A confrontation, ultimatum or departure notice is more reliable than guessing from a single approval cue.
Design and modding implications
Model relationships as directed edges
A robust data model stores an owner, a target and a value, rather than one “party approval” field. The directional structure described in Larian’s documentation supports different opinions in each direction and allows the same companion to approve of one ally while distrusting another.
Keep event inputs auditable
Designers can attach relationship changes to named events such as a dialogue choice, quest outcome, gift category or romance decision. Recording the event that caused a change makes debugging and player-facing explanation easier, especially when several companions react differently to one scene.
Separate relationship values from content gates
A numeric or labeled relationship can feed multiple gates, but the gates should express distinct narrative intentions. Romance access, a personal quest, a banter exchange and a departure need not share one threshold. This separation prevents a single accidental choice from controlling every form of companion content.
Write disagreement branches
Companions feel more credible when the system supports objection, negotiation and recovery as well as approval. A disagreement branch can alter the next conversation without ending the relationship, while a later commitment branch can determine whether trust survives a crisis.
Quick Recap
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Approval is the same as morality.” Approval is a character’s reaction; morality describes the values behind that reaction or a separate global reputation layer.
- “Loyalty always means a visible score.” Loyalty may be a hidden state, a quest outcome or a narrative label.
- “A high approval number guarantees romance.” Romance can use dedicated interaction and content gates, as the Veilguard guidance illustrates.
- “Banter is entirely random.” Authored banter can depend on party composition, conversations, personal plots and main-story progress.
- “One game’s threshold works everywhere.” The Dragon Age: Origins departure rule is a documented example, not an RPG-wide standard.
- “Every companion must agree with the protagonist.” Meaningful systems allow disagreement while preserving relationships and consequences.
