The fastest reliable fix for an RPCS3 crash, freeze, or rendering error is not a universal setting. First check the exact game, title ID, region, and current compatibility notes; then test one reversible, per-game change at a time. Vulkan support and graphics drivers matter when the symptom points to the renderer, but a known compatibility limitation may not be fixable on your computer.
Start with the exact game entry, not a global tweak
RPCS3 compatibility is title-specific. Two games can behave differently on the same computer, and different releases or regions of what appears to be the same game can have different test notes. Before changing settings, open the current RPCS3 Compatibility List and search for the exact title and release you are running. Record the title ID and region shown by your copy.
The list uses several status labels. They describe the tested state of that particular game, not a promise that every build, operating system, driver, or configuration will behave identically. Its test data changes frequently, so treat the live entry as the current reference rather than an old screenshot or forum post.
| Status | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|
| Playable | The game can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches in the tested conditions. A crash in a Playable entry is worth investigating as a local configuration, build, driver, or data problem, although the label is not a guarantee for every system. |
| Ingame | The game runs, but it may not be finishable, may contain serious glitches, or may perform too poorly. A freeze or visual fault can be part of the documented limitation rather than something a general setting will cure. |
| Intro | The tested software reaches an introduction but has not demonstrated normal gameplay. Do not infer that later levels will work. |
| Loadable | The title loads but does not reach a usable gameplay state in the tested report. |
| Nothing | The tested title does not produce a meaningful playable result. |
If the entry already describes the same crash, lock-up, missing effect, corrupted geometry, or unfinishable section, use that information to set expectations. Troubleshooting can sometimes improve a local symptom, but it cannot turn every Ingame, Intro, Loadable, or Nothing result into a Playable one.

Capture enough detail to make the failure diagnosable
“RPCS3 crashes” is not enough information to identify a cause. Write down the following before experimenting:
- Exact game name, title ID, region, and release or update you installed.
- RPCS3 build or version and the operating system.
- GPU model, whether the computer has more than one GPU, and the installed graphics-driver version.
- The renderer selected in RPCS3 when the failure occurs.
- The precise action that triggers the problem: boot, loading a save, entering a particular area, opening a menu, changing resolution, or playing a video sequence.
- Whether the issue affects one title or several titles.
- Any relevant message in the RPCS3 log, including the point at which the last successful frame or action occurred.
Keep a short test record with the original setting, the single change you made, the scene you retested, and the result. This prevents two changes from being mistaken for one fix and gives you a clean way to undo an unsuccessful experiment.
Use the compatibility notes to choose the right diagnostic path
The symptom’s scope is an important clue. A fault limited to one game should initially be treated as a title-specific compatibility or configuration issue. A fault that appears in many unrelated games, or prevents Vulkan from appearing at all, points more strongly toward renderer support, driver state, or a broader installation problem.

| One game crashes or freezes at a repeatable scene | Check that game’s compatibility entry, then test a custom configuration for that title. | One title | High: restore the saved value or remove the custom configuration. |
| One game has missing textures, flicker, incorrect lighting, or broken geometry | Check the entry for known renderer notes; verify Vulkan availability and drivers if the evidence points there. | Usually one title, with a possible system-wide driver cause | High for configuration; driver changes require more care. |
| Several games show similar rendering faults | Check GPU detection, renderer selection, and current drivers before changing individual game options. | System-wide | Moderate; document the previous driver and settings. |
| Vulkan is absent from the renderer choices | Confirm that the GPU supports Vulkan and update the relevant drivers. | System-wide | Moderate. |
| The compatibility entry lists an Ingame, Intro, Loadable, or Nothing result matching your failure | Read the limitation as a possible expected compatibility boundary instead of repeatedly applying unrelated tweaks. | Title or release | Not applicable. |
Create a custom configuration for the affected game
RPCS3’s FAQ advises most users to use the graphical interface. It documents a per-game custom configuration so that an experiment does not silently change every title. Use this workflow when the compatibility entry, a reproducible test, or a renderer-specific symptom gives you a reason to try a setting.
- In the RPCS3 game list, right-click the affected game.
- Select Create Custom Configuration.
- Open the game’s custom configuration through the location described in the RPCS3 FAQ. The file uses the title-specific name
config_GAMEID.yml, whereGAMEIDis replaced by the game’s identifier. - Before changing anything, record the current value or make a copy of the original configuration.
- Change one relevant option only. Do not alter several CPU, GPU, or debugging options at once.
- Launch the same game build and reproduce the same scene or action.
- Keep the change only if it improves the original failure without introducing a worse problem. Otherwise restore the previous value and test a different, evidence-based option.
The configuration reference catalogs many CPU and GPU controls, including options that are non-default in some game configurations. That catalog shows how varied title requirements can be; it does not establish a universal “best” value. A setting that helps one game can reduce performance, break another rendering path, or hide the real cause when applied globally.
Why one change at a time matters
Suppose a game freezes when entering one level. If you simultaneously change the renderer, resolution scale, shader settings, and CPU options, a later successful launch cannot tell you which change mattered. It also becomes difficult to report the result or undo only the harmful part. A controlled sequence—same build, same save, same scene, one altered value—turns a vague crash into a reproducible comparison.

Check Vulkan support and graphics drivers when the symptom fits
Vulkan may not appear as an available renderer when the GPU does not support it. The RPCS3 FAQ recommends checking GPU support and updating graphics drivers when Vulkan is unavailable or when a graphics problem appears related to the renderer. This is a conditional check, not proof that every glitch is a driver fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDesktop and single-GPU systems
- Identify the GPU model used by RPCS3, not merely the integrated adapter listed by the operating system.
- Confirm that model supports Vulkan.
- Install the current driver supplied for that GPU from its manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart the computer if the installer requests it, then reopen RPCS3 and check whether the renderer choices or original symptom changed.
Laptops with hybrid graphics
A laptop can contain both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, or an integrated GPU alongside a discrete adapter. The RPCS3 FAQ specifically warns that both GPU drivers may need updating in this situation. Updating only the adapter that appears to be rendering the game can leave the other device’s driver in a state that still causes detection or presentation problems.
- Identify both GPUs in the system.
- Update the driver for each relevant adapter using the manufacturers’ official packages.
- Reboot and verify which adapter RPCS3 is using.
- Retest the same scene before changing game-specific settings.
If ordinary driver updating does not help
The FAQ describes driver cleanup as a further troubleshooting step when other measures fail. Follow the official instructions and their stated precautions rather than using an arbitrary third-party cleanup utility or deleting driver files manually. Driver removal can affect display output and recovery options, so it should not be the first response to a single-game crash.
Diagnose crashes by when they happen
Crash during boot or immediately after selecting the game
- Confirm that the compatibility entry matches the exact title ID and region.
- Check whether the entry describes the same boot limitation.
- Verify that the game’s custom configuration has not inherited an experimental value from an earlier attempt.
- Restore the original per-game values and retest before trying another isolated change.
If the title is listed as Loadable, Nothing, or an Ingame result that never reaches normal play, repeated global setting changes are unlikely to overcome that documented boundary.
Crash while loading a save or entering one area
- Use the same save and route for every test so the trigger remains comparable.
- Check the compatibility notes for a level-specific or progression-specific limitation.
- Test a clean per-game configuration, changing only an option that is relevant to the documented symptom.
- Compare another save or earlier checkpoint only as a diagnostic: if one save fails while another works, the save or game state may be part of the problem.
Do not label a successful boot as a complete fix if the crash still occurs at the original scene.

Crash after changing resolution, renderer, or display mode
Revert the last display-related change in the custom configuration and retest the original renderer. If the problem persists across several games, move the investigation to GPU support and driver state rather than continuing to edit one title’s file.

Diagnose freezes without confusing them with slow compilation
A freeze is a sustained lack of progress, but the apparent pause can occur at different points: shader compilation, a loading transition, a particular effect, or a complete emulator stall. Note whether audio continues, whether the window redraws, and whether the same scene eventually advances. These observations help distinguish a repeatable compatibility limit from a transient delay without assuming a cause that has not been established.
Repeatable freeze in one title
Check the title’s compatibility status and notes first. Then apply the per-game, one-change workflow. Keep the test scene identical. If the same freeze remains after restoring defaults and trying only documented or symptom-relevant options, record the exact trigger for a focused compatibility report rather than accumulating random tweaks.
Freeze across multiple titles
Check whether the renderer is available and whether the GPU drivers are current. A system-wide pattern is a better reason to inspect Vulkan support and driver state than a failure isolated to one release.
Diagnose graphics glitches by their scope and trigger
Missing textures, black surfaces, flicker, or incorrect lighting
Search the exact compatibility entry for renderer notes and test whether the fault occurs only in one game. If the entry identifies a known limitation, treat it as compatibility information. If several games show similar artifacts, verify Vulkan support and drivers before making title-specific edits.
Corrupted geometry or effects after an update
Record the RPCS3 build and game update, then compare the behavior with the current compatibility notes for that release. Keep the configuration title-specific. Do not assume that a configuration value from an older build remains appropriate after an emulator or game update.
Artifacts that appear only after changing a setting
Undo the last change and retest the same scene. If the artifact disappears, retain the original value and document the result. A reversible rollback is more useful than layering another setting over a change that already caused a regression.

Reset experiments safely
- Close the game and RPCS3 before editing or replacing a configuration.
- Restore the value you recorded before the experiment, or remove the custom configuration if you need to return to the normal profile.
- Launch the same title and reproduce the same trigger.
- Only after confirming the baseline should you begin a new single-variable test.
A clean baseline is especially important after trying advice copied from a different game. RPCS3’s configuration reference contains many options, but the presence of an option is not evidence that it belongs in your title’s profile.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When reinstalling or buying hardware is not the answer
The available official troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal hardware purchase, cooling accessory, controller, or generic repair tool for this group of symptoms. A new GPU is justified only after a case-specific diagnosis shows that the current hardware lacks required graphics support or cannot meet the game’s needs. Likewise, cooling changes should follow evidence of an actual thermal problem, not a single unexplained freeze.
Reinstalling RPCS3 or repeatedly deleting configuration files can erase useful evidence without addressing a compatibility limitation. Preserve the title ID, build, driver version, trigger, and log details before taking disruptive steps.
What not to do
- Do not apply one global setting to every game because it helped an unrelated title.
- Do not force debug options or hidden configuration values without a specific, sourced reason.
- Do not treat an Ingame status as proof that your computer is misconfigured; it can mean serious glitches, insufficient performance, or an unfinishable game.
- Do not assume a graphics artifact is a driver problem when it occurs only in one known-limited release.
- Do not change several settings between tests.
- Do not use third-party driver tools as an initial response when the official driver path has not been checked.
- Do not report a fix without naming the exact game release, RPCS3 build, renderer, and setting that changed the result.
A compact decision checklist
- Identify: record the game, title ID, region, RPCS3 build, operating system, GPU, driver, renderer, trigger, and log message.
- Verify: read the current Compatibility List entry for that exact release and interpret its status.
- Classify: decide whether the problem affects one title, one release, or multiple games.
- Isolate: create a custom configuration by right-clicking the game and selecting Create Custom Configuration.
- Test: change one relevant option, keep the same scene, and record the result.
- Renderer-check: if Vulkan is missing or the pattern is system-wide, verify GPU support and update all relevant drivers, including both GPUs on a hybrid-graphics laptop.
- Rollback: restore the original value after an unsuccessful or regressive test.
- Stop: if the compatibility entry documents the same limitation, treat it as a likely title boundary rather than an endless configuration hunt.
How to decide whether you have found a real fix
A useful fix changes the original failure under the same conditions and does not merely move the problem to another scene. Confirm it by launching the same game build, using the same renderer and save, repeating the original trigger, and playing beyond the point that previously failed. Then test at least one nearby scene or action for regressions. Keep the successful value in the game’s custom configuration, not as a blanket global change, unless separate evidence shows that the underlying problem is genuinely system-wide.
If the result cannot be reproduced, describe it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed fix. RPCS3’s official material supports game-specific diagnosis, Vulkan and driver checks where relevant, and careful use of custom configurations; it does not support one setting that universally resolves crashes, freezes, or graphics glitches.
