A USB port on a router can share files, serve media, connect a printer, provide cellular internet on supported models, or store voicemail on certain modem routers. Which jobs are available depends on the exact router model, hardware revision, firmware, and region—one port does not guarantee all five features.

What the USB port on your router can do

Router USB ports are for compatible peripherals, not a universal add-on feature. TP-Link’s documentation, for example, says a supported modem router can use the port for USB storage or a 3G/4G modem; other functions depend on the particular product. Check the documentation for your exact model before buying a drive, modem, or other device.

1. Share files across your home network

With storage sharing enabled, a compatible flash drive or hard drive connected to the router can make files available to computers on the home network. This can be convenient for moving documents or accessing shared files without plugging the drive into each computer.

Sharing settings matter. In TP-Link’s instructions for certain ISP-customized routers, all clients can access all folders by default. Where the router offers them, set credentials and limit access to the folders or users that need it. Do not enable access from the internet unless you understand the exposure and have a specific need.

2. Serve music, photos, and video to compatible devices

Some routers include a media-server feature that indexes selected files on connected storage and makes them available to compatible players on the local network. ASUS documents a Media Server setup for supported routers, while a model-specific TP-Link guide describes local media use. A media server is not a universal streaming service: the router and playback device must support the relevant feature and file formats.

Storage sharing and media serving are separate capabilities. A router may let computers browse drive folders without offering a media server, or support media serving only in particular modes.

3. Share a USB printer

Some routers can make a USB printer available to networked devices. STRONG lists printer service for its 5G AIRHOME 1050; that is a model-specific example, not a feature to assume on another router. Check whether your router supports printer sharing and whether your computers need a vendor utility or a particular connection method.

4. Use a supported USB cellular modem for internet access

Certain modem-router models can connect to a compatible USB 3G/4G modem and use its cellular connection when another access method is unavailable. Support depends on the router, modem, carrier, SIM, and local service; verify compatibility across all of them before relying on this as a backup connection.

5. Store voicemail on certain modem routers

TP-Link describes USB storage for voicemail on certain VoIP DSL modem routers. This is a specialized use tied to supported models and services, not a general router feature.

Check the router and USB device before connecting

Start with the router’s product page or user guide for the exact model and hardware version. Firmware and regional variants can differ, so a feature listed for a related model may not apply to yours.

  • For media: check that the router provides a media-server feature and that the player supports it and the files’ formats.
  • For a printer: confirm printer service support and any required client software or setup method.
  • For cellular internet: check the exact modem and carrier compatibility, SIM requirements, and local coverage.
  • For security: review who can access shared folders and whether sharing is limited to the home network or exposed remotely.

Limits vary by product family. For the modem-router group listed in TP-Link’s Singapore support article, supported hard-drive formats include FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT, and the stated maximum is 4 TB per partition. These are not universal router limits. ASUS likewise directs owners to its router-specific storage compatibility list and notes that formatting erases the drive’s data.

Set up storage sharing safely

  1. Check compatibility first. Find your exact router model and hardware version in its support documentation. Confirm the drive format, capacity, partition, and power requirements.
  2. Protect existing files. Do not format a drive until you have copied off anything you need; formatting erases its contents.
  3. Connect the drive. Plug it into the router’s USB port. If the drive requires external power, connect its power supply as well.
  4. Enable the feature you need. In the router’s administration interface, look for storage sharing, file sharing, or media-server settings. Names and paths differ by model; use that model’s guide rather than assuming a standard menu.
  5. Set access controls. Review default permissions, create credentials or narrower shares if available, and avoid enabling remote FTP access casually.
  6. Test from a client device. Confirm that the intended computer or player can see only the shared folders or media it should access.
  7. Eject before unplugging. Use the router’s safe-removal control, if provided, before disconnecting the drive to reduce the risk of data damage.

Router-attached storage is not a backup by itself

A drive shared through a router can make files easier to reach, but it remains one copy of those files on one connected drive. Keep a separate backup copy of important material rather than treating router sharing as a backup system.
