Sometimes you can tell the difference between an expensive and a cheap router—but only when its extra speed, coverage, ports or capacity match your internet plan, devices and home. For everyday browsing and streaming in a small home, a budget router may feel just as good. A premium model is more likely to matter with multi-gigabit internet, heavy local transfers, many active devices or challenging coverage.

What a higher price can—and cannot—buy

More expensive routers may offer higher peak speeds, additional Wi-Fi bands, faster Ethernet ports, more capacity for demanding workloads or more options for extending coverage. Those features are not automatic proof of better performance: a premium router can be faster at a task your household does not need, and a cheaper model can be sufficient for your actual use.

There is no established typical percentage by which expensive routers outperform cheap ones. Compare measured throughput, range and latency under load for the models and conditions that matter to you, rather than treating price, antenna count or a Wi-Fi generation label as a performance result. RTINGS describes its router testing dimensions and methodology.

Will a new router make your internet faster?

Your broadband plan sets the ceiling for internet speed. A better router can improve the wireless link between a device and the router when that link is the bottleneck, but it cannot make an internet connection exceed the speed supplied by your ISP. If your current router already handles the plan and reaches the rooms you use, a pricier replacement may not produce a noticeable improvement.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

For example, RTINGS identifies the TP-Link Archer AX55 as a budget option for plans under 1 Gbps in its general router guide and notes that a faster router cannot exceed the plan’s speed. That is a time-sensitive recommendation from one testing publisher, not a universal endorsement; check the current guide and test results before choosing a specific model. RTINGS’ router guide and explanation of router and internet speed limits provide its context.

How to compare routers fairly

Compare models against the same household needs and testing conditions. A headline maximum rate is not a substitute for results at the distance, band and workload you care about.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Throughput by distance and band: Look for measured results at both close range and farther rooms. A strong result beside the router does not establish what a distant device will receive.
  • Range and coverage: Check performance across distances and consider whether a mesh system is needed for multiple rooms or floors. A very fast single router is not necessarily the answer to dead zones.
  • Latency under load: For gaming and video calls, look for tests that measure lag while other devices are using the network. A “gaming” label alone does not demonstrate a latency advantage.
  • WAN and LAN ports: Match port speeds to your broadband service and any multi-gigabit wired equipment. Faster ports are useful only when connected devices and service can use them.
  • Wi-Fi bands and generation: Check whether your phones, computers and other clients support the features being advertised. A router cannot deliver a band or capability to a device that does not support it.
  • Price versus comparable performance: Ask whether a less expensive model delivers similar speed and range for your use. RTINGS’ current guides note that some higher-priced options perform similarly to cheaper alternatives. See its comparison guide.

What certification tells you

A Wi-Fi Alliance certificate can document capabilities listed for a specific model, but it does not guarantee a particular speed in your home. For example, the Alliance record for the Askey SBE1V1K, certified January 3, 2025, lists Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7, capabilities across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz spectra, and security and interoperability entries. Those are certification-record facts, not a household performance comparison. View the Wi-Fi Alliance certificate record.

When paying more is more likely to matter

  • You have multi-gigabit broadband: A router and ports capable of handling that service can avoid a router-side bottleneck, provided your devices can also use the faster connection.
  • You transfer large files over your local network: Faster Wi-Fi or wired links may help when the computers or storage devices involved support them.
  • Many devices are active at once: Higher-capacity equipment may be useful under sustained busy conditions; check testing under load rather than assuming a premium price guarantees better results.
  • Your home has coverage problems: Compare range performance and consider mesh as a separate coverage approach if one access point cannot reach the areas you need.

When a cheaper router may be enough

A budget model can be a sensible choice for ordinary browsing and streaming in a small home, especially when the internet plan is below gigabit speeds and the household’s devices do not need premium features. RTINGS’ 2026 Wi-Fi 7 comparison discusses a budget recommendation and distinguishes ordinary gigabit ports from multi-gigabit wired needs—an example of why an omitted feature matters only if you need it. Wirecutter’s 2026 guide describes testing speed, range and multitasking latency and names the Wi-Fi 7-compatible TP-Link Archer BE230 as a strong combination of price, features and performance among the routers it tested. Its pick is time-sensitive and reflects that guide’s testing, not a guarantee it is the best choice for every household. See Wirecutter’s router guide.

Check these details before buying

  1. Find your plan speed. Check your ISP account or bill, and note whether the service is gigabit or multi-gigabit.
  2. Identify the actual bottleneck. Compare a wired speed test near the router with Wi-Fi results in the rooms where performance disappoints. If wired performance is already slow, the ISP connection may be the limiting factor.
  3. Check client support. Verify the Wi-Fi generations, bands and wired capabilities of the devices you expect to benefit.
  4. Map coverage needs. Note dead zones, distance, floors and obstacles. Decide whether range from one router is enough or whether mesh coverage is worth evaluating.
  5. Match ports and workload. List any multi-gigabit wired devices and consider whether your household needs low latency under simultaneous use.
  6. Compare independent results. Use testing for speed, range and latency under similar conditions; do not compare a theoretical router maximum with a speed test performed on a different plan, device, band, distance or layout.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Assuming more antennas mean more useful coverage.
  • Assuming a higher price guarantees lower latency or better Wi-Fi in every room.
  • Comparing maximum advertised rates with tests made using different devices, service plans, bands or distances.
  • Replacing the router when the slow connection is actually caused by the ISP plan or a client device.
