A router is a networking device or computer system that connects networks and forwards data packets toward their destinations. It checks destination addressing and uses routing information to decide where each packet should go next. The home device called a “Wi-Fi router” usually combines that routing role with wireless access and Ethernet connections.

What does a router do?

A router receives and sends data across computer networks. Cisco describes the device this way in its router definition. Its central job is to move packets from one network toward another, based on the destination information in each packet and the routes available to it.

Think of a router as a mail-sorting hub: destination information helps it choose the next direction. Unlike a human sorting mail, however, a router uses network addresses and routing rules, not street names. It normally chooses a next step rather than knowing the complete end-to-end path a packet will take.

How does a router decide where data goes?

  1. A device creates a request. For example, a laptop requests information from a destination outside its local network.
  2. The laptop sends the packet to its router. The packet includes destination network information.
  3. The router checks the destination and routing information. It selects an appropriate next step for forwarding the packet.
  4. Other routers continue forwarding it. Routers on the larger route make their own forwarding decisions until the packet reaches its destination network.

The exact forwarding process depends on the network’s configuration and scale. Cisco’s overview of how routers work explains the introductory principle: routers examine destination IP information and consult routing information to choose where packets go next.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Router vs. modem: what is the difference?

A modem connects equipment at a home or business to internet service from an internet service provider (ISP). A router directs traffic between networks and gives devices on a local network a way to share connectivity. The roles are different even when they are housed in the same box.

Some homes use separate modem and router devices; others have a single gateway that combines modem, router, switch, and wireless access point functions. The number of boxes does not determine which networking jobs are being performed.

Is a Wi-Fi router the same as a router?

Not exactly. A router is defined by its job of forwarding traffic between networks. A wireless router also provides Wi-Fi access so devices can connect to the local network without an Ethernet cable. Routers can be wired, wireless, or implemented as software rather than as a standalone home appliance. Cisco explains the Wi-Fi role in its guide to a wireless router.

Wi-Fi and internet service are also distinct. Wi-Fi connects a device to the local network; internet access depends on the router’s upstream connection and the ISP’s service. A device can therefore connect to Wi-Fi even when the internet connection is unavailable.

How is a router different from a switch?

At a high level, routers forward traffic between IP networks, while switches commonly connect devices within a local network. A home gateway may include switching alongside routing and Wi-Fi functions, so these roles are not always represented by separate devices.
