For most mixed-floor homes, the Roomba Max 775 Combo is the better value at the prices iRobot displayed on October 13, 2026. It costs $799.99 on the US product page, uses a self-washing PowerSpin roller with a cover that shields it from detected carpet, and includes heated roller cleaning and drying. The Roomba Combo 10 Max costs $1,399.99, but its retracting mop pad, lower 3.4-inch profile, camera recognition, Dirt Detective room prioritization and SmartScrub may justify the premium for the right home.
This is a feature-and-price recommendation based on iRobot’s published specifications and claims, not an independent head-to-head test. Prices, availability and promotions can change, so verify the live checkout total and measure the lowest furniture clearance before buying.
At a glance: the important differences
Both robots vacuum and mop, empty debris into a dock and automate much of their maintenance. Their central design choice is different: the Max 775 Combo scrubs with a rotating roller that it washes, scrapes and dries, while the Combo 10 Max carries a flat mop pad that retracts onto the robot when it needs to avoid wet carpet.

Mopping and carpet protection
How the Max 775 Combo’s roller works
The Max 775 Combo uses iRobot’s PowerSpin roller mop. iRobot says the roller washes and refreshes itself during cleaning with 167°F (75°C) heated water and built-in scraping, intended to reduce the spread of dirty water and grime. The listed roller scrubbing speed is 200 RPM. The dock handles washing and drying, and the system dispenses StayClean concentrate.
When the robot detects carpet, iRobot says a protective cover lifts and shields the roller. That is a different approach from simply raising a flat pad: the roller remains part of the cleaning assembly, while the cover is intended to keep a wet surface away from the carpet. The effectiveness of that seal in every carpet type or edge transition is not established by an independent test, so homes with valuable or highly absorbent rugs should still use conservative carpet settings and observe the first cleaning cycle.
How the Combo 10 Max’s retracting pad works
The Combo 10 Max uses an Auto-Retract Mopping System. iRobot states that the pad lifts onto the top of the robot to prevent wet-carpet messes. This gives the 10 Max a visible physical separation between the wet pad and the floor whenever it is vacuuming carpet. The robot also offers SmartScrub, which moves the pad back and forth rather than only traveling in a straight pass; iRobot describes this as “2x deeper scrubbing.”

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA retracting pad may appeal to households with large carpeted areas, many thresholds or a strong preference for keeping the mop physically away from carpet. It does not remove the need to set up rooms and boundaries thoughtfully: the robot still has to recognize the transition and execute the retraction correctly. iRobot’s statement is a product claim, not a guarantee for every rug height, fringe style or floor transition.
Which mopping design suits which floor plan?
- Choose the 775’s roller approach if you want active roller washing, heated water and a covered mop mechanism at a lower purchase price.
- Choose the 10 Max’s retracting pad if the physical lifting action is more important to you than roller washing and you value SmartScrub.
- For mixed flooring with delicate rugs, measure rug pile and transition heights and supervise the first few runs. Neither product page supplies a universal clearance or rug-compatibility guarantee.
Dock automation and day-to-day maintenance
Max 775 Combo dock routine
iRobot describes the 775 dock as washing the PowerSpin roller with heated water, scraping residue, drying the roller, emptying collected debris and dispensing StayClean solution. The listing advertises up to three months of hands-free operation. “Up to” is important: the actual interval depends on dirt load, mopping frequency, household size, water use and how often the dock needs attention.
Because the roller is washed in the dock, owners should expect a water-management routine rather than a completely maintenance-free appliance. Keep the clean-water reservoir filled, empty or replace the dirty-water container as directed, and inspect the roller and dock area if an odor, incomplete drying or reduced water flow appears. The product information does not specify a universal cleaning interval for each component.

Combo 10 Max AutoWash dock routine
The Combo 10 Max’s AutoWash dock is described as emptying debris, refilling water, washing and drying the mop pad and running a dock self-cleaning cycle. The pad-washing design means the consumable is cleaned in place rather than being manually removed after every run. As with the 775, the advertised automation still requires the owner to supply water, remove waste and check the dock periodically.
The 10 Max page does not provide a comparable “three months” hands-free figure in the specifications supplied here. Do not treat the absence of a stated interval as evidence that it needs less or more attention than the 775.
What arrives in each box
| Model | Listed included spares |
|---|---|
| Max 775 Combo | Extra carbon AutoEmpty bag, filter, side brushes and a StayClean sample |
| Combo 10 Max | Extra filter, edge-sweeping brush, dirt-disposal bag and microfiber mopping pad |
These box contents indicate the consumables each model expects, but they do not prove that parts are interchangeable. Confirm the exact model number before ordering filters, bags, brushes, pads or cleaning solution.
Navigation, recognition and cleaning controls
Max 775 Combo capabilities
The Max 775 Combo listing highlights PrecisionVision AI and ClearView Pro LiDAR. iRobot also advertises “4X more power-lifting suction” and “10x better” dried-spill removal. Those multipliers are manufacturer comparisons; the product page’s linked footnote defines the suction baseline, and the dried-spill statement is not a direct 775-versus-10-Max result.
LiDAR and camera-based recognition can help a robot understand room geometry and avoid objects, but the supplied product information does not provide a standardized obstacle-avoidance rate, cleaning score or runtime test. Treat the capabilities as design features rather than guaranteed outcomes in every lighting, clutter or flooring condition.

Combo 10 Max capabilities
The Combo 10 Max page specifically describes camera recognition, Dirt Detective and SmartScrub. Dirt Detective is intended to prioritize rooms based on detected dirt, while camera recognition supports object identification. iRobot advertises dirt recognition up to eight times more often and the previously noted two-times-deeper SmartScrub claim.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Those features may be valuable if you want the robot to decide which rooms deserve attention first. They are less important if you prefer fixed schedules, manually selected rooms or a simple vacuum-and-mop routine. The page does not provide an independently measured accuracy rate for Dirt Detective or recognition frequency.
How to interpret the performance multipliers
Do not use “4X,” “10x,” “2x” or “up to 8x” as if they were results from a shared laboratory benchmark. iRobot presents them as product claims, and the comparisons use different baselines and conditions. There is no controlled independent comparison of these exact two models in the available material, so suction or stain-removal multipliers should not decide the purchase by themselves.
Size, furniture clearance and battery capacity
Physical dimensions
| Measurement | Max 775 Combo | Combo 10 Max |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 14.7 inches | 13.3 inches |
| Width | 14.4 inches | 13.3 inches |
| Height | 4.1 inches | 3.4 inches |
The 10 Max is 0.7 inch shorter in listed height, which may let it pass under furniture that blocks the 775. Its smaller listed footprint may also help around tight furniture, although turning space and dock placement still matter. A dimension on a product page is not a guarantee that the robot will navigate a particular leg, overhang or threshold.
Measure the lowest obstruction, not the advertised average
- Find the lowest point under each sofa, bed, cabinet and media console the robot should clean beneath.
- Measure from the floor to that obstruction with a rigid ruler or tape measure.
- Compare the measurement with the robot’s listed height, leaving practical margin for uneven floors and any part that protrudes above the main chassis.
- Check the route to the dock as well as the cleaning area; a robot that fits under furniture but cannot reach its dock reliably will still require intervention.
Do not infer clearance from battery capacity, suction claims or the robot’s overall footprint. The only listed heights here are 4.1 inches for the 775 and 3.4 inches for the 10 Max.
Battery figures are not runtime figures
iRobot lists a 6,000 mAh LFP battery for the Max 775 Combo and a 4,200 mAh LFP battery for the Combo 10 Max. Those capacities are not a matched runtime test. Actual coverage can vary with suction level, mop use, floor type, navigation behavior, room temperature and whether the robot returns to charge and resumes. The supplied pages do not establish which model completes a larger area per charge.

When the 775 is the stronger value
The 775 is the practical value choice when you want automated vacuuming and mopping without paying for the 10 Max’s additional recognition and retracting-pad features. Its lower displayed price still includes a self-washing roller, heated cleaning and a protective carpet cover. If those functions meet your needs, the remaining $600 can cover replacement consumables or simply remain in your budget.

The 10 Max earns consideration when its lower profile solves a real furniture-clearance problem, when you strongly prefer a mop pad that retracts onto the robot, or when Dirt Detective and SmartScrub fit the way you manage cleaning. Paying more for features you will not use does not create better value; paying more to solve a specific clearance or carpet-handling requirement can.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model fits your home?
Mixed hard floors and carpet
Start with the Max 775 Combo if the home has a typical mix of hard flooring and carpet and you want the lower displayed price. Its roller cover is designed to shield the wet roller when carpet is detected, and the dock’s heated wash-and-dry routine reduces manual mop handling. Move to the 10 Max if you prefer the pad’s physical retraction or need the lower 3.4-inch profile.
Carpet-heavy homes
If the robot will spend most of its time on carpet, the key question is how much mopping you will actually do. The 10 Max’s retracting pad may be attractive because iRobot explicitly describes it lifting onto the robot. The 775 can also protect carpet with its cover, but it remains a roller-based design. Neither page supplies independent long-term carpet-sealing results, so inspect your rugs and supervise early runs.
Mostly hard-floor homes
On mostly hard floors, the mopping mechanism and dock routine become more important than carpet protection. The 775’s heated 75°C roller washing and scraping may appeal if you expect frequent wet cleaning. The 10 Max’s SmartScrub and pad-washing dock may appeal if you want a familiar flat-pad motion and room-prioritization features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLow furniture and tight layouts
Favor the 10 Max when a measured 3.4-inch clearance is the difference between cleaning under beds and leaving those areas untouched. Do not buy from the nominal number alone: measure the lowest obstruction and account for uneven floors, furniture lips and the path back to the dock.

Owners who want the least routine handling
Both docks automate major tasks. The 775 has an explicit claim of up to three months of hands-free operation, while the 10 Max lists debris emptying, water refilling, pad washing and drying, and dock self-cleaning. Neither is maintenance-free. Choose based on which consumable and washing system you are more willing to inspect and replenish.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure clearance. Record the lowest height under every piece of furniture you expect the robot to clean. The 10 Max is listed at 3.4 inches tall; the 775 is 4.1 inches.
- Map your floor mix. Note hard floors, low-pile rugs, high-pile rugs, thresholds and fringe. Decide whether a roller cover or a retracting pad better matches those transitions.
- Choose your maintenance style. Pick the 775 for heated roller washing, scraping and StayClean dispensing, or the 10 Max for pad washing, drying and the dock self-cleaning cycle.
- Decide whether smart prioritization matters. Dirt Detective and camera recognition are 10 Max features highlighted by iRobot; the 775 emphasizes PrecisionVision AI and ClearView Pro LiDAR.
- Compare the live total. Recheck price, shipping, tax, promotions, stock and included accessories. The October 13, 2026 displayed prices may no longer apply.
- Verify replacement parts. Match filters, bags, brushes, pads and cleaning solution to the exact model. The included spares are model-specific examples, not proof of cross-compatibility.
- Plan the dock location. Leave a stable, accessible area for water filling, waste removal and routine inspection. A dock hidden behind furniture undermines the convenience of either system.
What is and is not established by the published specifications
The official pages establish the listed dimensions, battery capacities, dock functions, mopping mechanisms, included spares and the prices shown at the time they were viewed. They also document iRobot’s advertised multipliers and recognition features.
They do not establish a controlled, independent score comparing pickup, edge cleaning, navigation errors, carpet dryness, dried-stain removal, noise, battery runtime or long-term reliability between these exact models. Battery capacity cannot substitute for runtime testing, and a vendor’s “times better” statement cannot substitute for a shared benchmark. Use the claims to understand each design, then make the decision from your floor plan, clearance measurements, maintenance preferences and current price.

Final recommendation
Buy the Roomba Max 775 Combo for the stronger value in a mixed-floor home: it is listed at $799.99, provides a self-washing heated roller, shields that roller when carpet is detected and advertises extensive dock automation. Buy the Roomba Combo 10 Max at its higher price when its 3.4-inch height, retracting mop pad, SmartScrub or Dirt Detective features solve a specific problem that the 775 cannot.
Whichever model you select, confirm the live price, measure furniture clearance and verify consumable compatibility before placing the order.
