The Roomba Max 775 Combo combines ClearView Pro LiDAR, PrecisionVision AI, a PowerSpin roller mop and an AutoWash dock. It can save up to five floor maps, run four vacuuming and mopping patterns, keep its roller clean with heated washing and drying, and refill itself with the manufacturer’s approved concentrate. Those automations reduce daily handling, but they do not eliminate routine tank, brush, contact and filter care.
What the Roomba Max 775 can map and recognize
ClearView Pro LiDAR and PrecisionVision AI work together to scan rooms, build maps and identify common obstacles. iRobot says the Roomba Home app can store up to five maps, automatically name rooms and help the robot route around cords, shoes, furniture and pet messes. The five-map limit is useful for a multilevel home, but it is not the same as simultaneous access to five homes: maps represent the floors or spaces you teach the robot and should be managed in the app.
iRobot also states that a mapping run takes nine minutes. That is a manufacturer-stated target, not an independently verified guarantee. A crowded floor, closed doors, reflective surfaces or a dock that is moved after mapping can change the time and the quality of the resulting map.

- Put the AutoWash dock in its permanent location, connect it to power and charge the robot.
- Clear loose cables, clothing and small objects that could block the first scan. Open the doors you want included and keep people and pets from repeatedly interrupting the run.
- In the Roomba Home app, start the mapping or map-creation run. Keep the robot free to leave the dock and return to it without lifting it.
- When the run finishes, review the room boundaries and names in the app. Correct a room split or name before assigning routines.
- For another floor, carry the charged robot to that level without moving the dock map’s physical location in the home. Start the app’s mapping process for the new level and save it as an additional map.
App labels can change with software updates, so use the mapping option shown in your current Roomba Home version rather than relying on an old screenshot. If a floor is repeatedly misidentified, run the scan again with doors fully open and the main walking paths unobstructed.

Vacuuming and mopping modes
The Max 775 offers four manufacturer-listed choices. Select the mode that matches the floor condition instead of assuming every run uses both functions.
| Mode | What the robot does | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuum only | Collects dry debris without wet mopping. | Daily dust, crumbs or carpet cleaning. |
| Mop only | Uses the roller mop for wet floor cleaning. | Hard floors that need a dedicated wash. |
| Vacuum and mop together | Vacuuming and roller mopping occur in one run. | Routine hard-floor maintenance when debris and light soil are present. |
| Vacuum first, then mop | Completes the dry pass before beginning the wet pass. | Floors where removing loose grit first can reduce wet smearing. |
iRobot describes the PowerSpin roller mop as turning at 200 RPM. SmartScrub adds back-and-forth movement and downward pressure, while the roller extends toward edges. These are design specifications and feature descriptions from iRobot, not a guarantee that every stain will be removed in one cycle.
Will mopping wet the carpets?
For vacuum-and-mop and mop cleaning modes, iRobot says the robot automatically avoids carpets and uses a protective roller cover. That combination is intended to keep the wet roller from contacting carpet fibers. Mark carpeted rooms correctly in the app and keep thresholds clear so the robot can recognize the transition. If you need to clean a mixed room, use vacuum-only mode for the carpeted area or create a room-specific routine rather than relying on an uncertain boundary.

A Tom’s Guide review published October 9, 2026, reported that the roller cover protected carpets during the reviewer’s testing and reduced the need to handle the mop. The same reviewer found slight residue after testing soy sauce, mayonnaise and mud, and observed side brushes scattering some debris away from the robot. Those are observations from one test setup, not population-level performance data; heavy or sticky spills may still require a manual spot clean.
How the AutoWash dock works
The AutoWash dock handles several post-run jobs. It empties collected debris, washes the roller, heat-dries it, mixes StayClean Mopping Concentrate with clean water, refills the robot and runs a dock self-cleaning cycle after roller washing. iRobot lists a heated wash temperature of 167°F (75°C) and heated drying at 122°F (50°C).
| Dock function | Practical result | Owner action still required |
|---|---|---|
| Debris auto-emptying | Transfers the robot’s collected dirt to the dock. | Empty or replace the dock’s debris container when the app or indicator shows it is full. |
| Roller washing | Flushes the roller after mopping. | Inspect the roller and wash area for hair or lodged material. |
| Heat drying | Dries the roller at the stated 122°F/50°C setting. | Keep the dock area ventilated and check for standing water or unusual odor. |
| Concentrate mixing and refill | Combines StayClean concentrate with clean water and sends the mixture to the robot. | Keep the clean-water tank filled and use only the approved solution guidance for your model and region. |
| Dock self-cleaning | Runs after roller washing to remove leftover debris. | Rinse the dock tanks and wipe accessible surfaces as part of routine care. |
iRobot markets the system as providing up to three months of hands-free cleaning. Read that as reduced intervention for ordinary routines, not as a promise that the owner can ignore tanks, debris, filters or brushes for three months. Household size, pets, spill frequency and cleaning schedule all affect how soon service is needed.
Cleaning solution: what belongs in the tank
The dock is designed to mix iRobot’s StayClean Mopping Concentrate with clean water. iRobot support identifies StayClean concentrate for Combo robots and warns that unapproved liquids can cause foaming, corrosion or malfunction. A product marketed generally for hard floors is not automatically safe for this robot’s pump, seals or roller system.

- Do not add bleach, vinegar, essential oils, dish detergent or another floor cleaner unless current iRobot instructions specifically approve it.
- Never mix two cleaning products in the tank.
- If you accidentally add an unapproved solution, stop the cleaning cycle, empty the tank according to the manual and follow iRobot’s current support procedure before operating the dock again.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a complete compatibility table for every third-party cleaner or every regional Max 775 variant. When a local label conflicts with a current iRobot instruction, follow the model-specific iRobot guidance and contact support for clarification.
Maintenance you still perform by hand
Automation reduces frequency, but the owner remains responsible for basic inspection. iRobot’s maintenance guidance calls for wiping the robot bin, rinsing the dock water tanks, cleaning charging contacts and brushes, and replacing the filter every three to six months.
After a wet-cleaning cycle
- Check that the robot returned fully to the dock and that the clean- and dirty-water tanks are seated.
- Look at the roller and its cover for hair, threads or sticky residue.
- Wipe visible grime from the charging contacts on both robot and dock with a dry or manufacturer-approved method.
- Empty or rinse the relevant tank when the dock indicates it is full or dirty; do not leave stagnant water indefinitely.
Weekly or as-needed checks
- Remove hair and wrapped fibers from the main brush and side brushes.
- Wipe the robot’s bin and inspect the inlet for compacted debris.
- Rinse dock tanks with clean water and let removable parts dry as directed in the manual.
- Inspect the roller cover, wheels and edge area if the robot leaves a strip of dirt or begins making unusual noise.
Filter interval
iRobot specifies filter replacement every three to six months. A home with pets, renovation dust or frequent vacuuming may reach the shorter end of that range. A clogged filter can reduce airflow and make the robot appear weaker even when the brush is clear. Use the manual’s cleaning method for the filter; do not reinstall a washable component while it is damp.

Troubleshooting common problems
The map is incomplete or rooms are wrong
Return the robot to its dock, open blocked doors, remove temporary obstacles and run mapping again. Avoid moving the dock between runs. Review room boundaries in the app before scheduling a mop routine, because a bad boundary can send a wet roller onto a surface you meant to exclude.
The carpet is damp after a mop run
Stop the job and inspect the map’s carpet designations, roller cover and threshold. Confirm that the selected mode is one of the modes that avoids carpet. If the cover is damaged, the carpet zone is misclassified or the robot repeatedly crosses the same threshold, use vacuum-only mode for that area and contact iRobot support.
The dock will not wash or refill
Check power, tank seating, water level and debris around the washing area. Clean the charging contacts and inspect the roller for a blockage. Do not substitute a household cleaner to force a cycle; foaming or corrosion can create a second fault.
Cleaning leaves streaks or residue
Inspect the roller for soil buildup, verify the correct concentrate and dilution, and run the dock’s wash cycle. Sticky spills may need a preliminary manual wipe. The single Tom’s Guide test that found slight residue after condiment and mud samples is a reminder that dock automation does not make every stain a one-pass job.
Debris appears outside the cleaning path
Check the side brushes for bending or wrapped hair and reduce the amount of loose debris in a single run. Tom’s Guide reported side-brush scattering in its test; if scattering persists after brush cleaning or replacement, document the surface and debris type for support rather than assuming the behavior is universal.
Who should choose the Max 775?
The Max 775 is best suited to homes that want one robot for dry pickup and wet floor care, have several levels that benefit from stored maps, and value a dock that washes and dries the roller. It is less suitable for anyone expecting zero maintenance, universal third-party cleaning fluids or guaranteed removal of dried, sticky spills without intervention.
