If your Roomba 105 Vac is leaving crumbs, pet hair or dusty edges behind, change four things first: the rooms it cleans, suction level, number of passes and schedule. Use Spot Clean for a small spill and keep-out zones for places the robot should not enter. These controls are available in the iRobot app for the 105 Vac. The Roomba 105 product name is ambiguous, however: iRobot also sells a 105 Combo with mopping controls. The instructions below are for the vacuum-only 105 Vac unless a section is explicitly labeled Combo.

Start by identifying your Roomba 105 model

Check the model name in the app, on the robot or on its packaging. The Roomba 105 Vac is a dry vacuum. Its relevant cleaning choices are room selection, suction power, pass count, Spot Clean, schedules and keep-out zones. The Roomba 105 Combo adds a mop and therefore has controls that do not belong on the Vac.

Control or behavior 105 Vac 105 Combo
Room targeting, schedules and custom cleans Available Available
Selectable suction levels Four levels advertised by iRobot Available for vacuum cleaning; exact app options can vary
Multiple vacuum passes Available Available
Mop-only or combined vacuum-and-mop modes Not applicable Available
Liquid adjustment and automatic carpet detection while mopping Not applicable Combo-specific
Keep-out zones Available for areas the robot should avoid Available
No-mop zones Not applicable Used for mopping jobs

Do not look for a no-mop-zone setting on a 105 Vac. A keep-out zone tells the robot to avoid an area entirely; a Combo no-mop zone allows a mopping robot to enter while preventing mopping in a particular area.

Change the settings in the order that affects results most

Open the current iRobot app and select the Roomba 105. App labels and screen layouts can change, so use the setting names shown for your robot rather than relying on an old menu path. A typical custom-clean workflow is:

  1. Choose a room, group of rooms or custom area instead of starting a whole-home run.
  2. Set suction power for the selected job.
  3. Choose one or more passes where the app offers a pass-count control.
  4. Review the map and keep-out zones before starting.
  5. Save the job as a schedule if you want it to repeat.

Changing these options per job is usually more effective than selecting the most aggressive setting everywhere. A kitchen after dinner, a hallway used by pets and a lightly used guest room do not create the same cleaning load.

Use suction level to match the mess

iRobot advertises four suction levels for the 105 Vac. The higher settings are intended for heavier debris, embedded grit and areas that collect hair; a lower setting can be adequate for light dust in a quiet, lightly used room.

When to raise suction

  • Use a higher level in entryways where outdoor grit is tracked indoors.
  • Increase suction in rooms with visible crumbs, fine litter or pet hair.
  • Pair higher suction with an extra pass when debris is ground into rugs or concentrated along traffic lanes.

When to leave suction at a lower level

  • Use the standard or Normal routine for ordinary daily dust when the floor is already maintained.
  • Choose a lower level when noise matters, such as during a call or while someone is sleeping.
  • Use less intensive cleaning on rooms that are rarely occupied to avoid spending battery and time unnecessarily.

iRobot’s general Roomba guidance notes that more suction can be louder and may reduce available runtime. That is general guidance, not a 105-specific laboratory measurement, so treat it as a trade-off rather than a guaranteed percentage change. If the app displays a Normal routine, use it as your baseline and escalate only the rooms that need more work.

Increase pass count in high-traffic areas

The 105 Vac supports multiple vacuum passes. One pass is a sensible default for routine cleaning. Additional passes are useful where dirt is concentrated, but running extra passes through every room can make a job take longer and consume more battery.

A practical pass strategy

Situation Suggested starting point Reason
Daily maintenance in most rooms One pass Removes normal dust without extending the job unnecessarily.
Entryway, kitchen or pet route Two passes, then reassess These areas commonly receive repeated debris.
Visible spill or one small dirty patch Spot Clean A whole-home run is disproportionate to a localized mess.
Persistent debris after two passes Inspect the brush path and filter before adding more passes A blockage or loaded filter can limit pickup regardless of settings.

Use extra passes on a selected room or custom area rather than applying them globally. If an area still looks dirty after repeated runs, maintenance is the next step; repeatedly increasing passes will not repair a blocked air path.

Use Spot Clean for a localized mess

Spot Clean is designed for a small, defined area such as cereal beside a table, soil near a plant or litter by a tray. iRobot says the 105 Vac repeatedly cleans one area for up to five minutes. Start Spot Clean soon after the spill, remove objects that could obstruct the robot and supervise the first use if the area is unfamiliar.

Spot Clean is not a substitute for a scheduled room clean. It concentrates effort on one location, while a room or custom-area job is better when dust is distributed across the floor.

Examples of useful room jobs

  • After cooking: run the kitchen and the route to the dining area, with higher suction or an extra pass if crumbs are visible.
  • After outdoor activity: select the entryway and adjacent hall rather than the whole home.
  • Pet-heavy day: target the rooms where the pet spends time and use a stronger setting there.
  • Quiet hours: clean only low-traffic rooms at a lower setting, then schedule louder, stronger cleaning for an appropriate time.

Room names and map boundaries depend on the map saved in your app. If a room is split incorrectly, edit the map before relying on schedules; otherwise the robot may clean too much or omit part of the intended area.

Create a schedule that fits the household

Scheduling turns the settings into a routine. Set a cadence that matches how quickly your floors become dirty rather than choosing a universal interval. Homes with pets, children or frequent outdoor traffic may need more frequent targeted jobs; a lightly used home may need fewer.

  1. Open the Roomba 105’s scheduling control in the app.
  2. Choose the days and start time when floors are clear and the robot can leave its dock.
  3. Select the rooms or custom clean area for that job.
  4. Set suction and pass count for the selected areas.
  5. Save the schedule and check the first run for map accuracy, obstacles and adequate docking access.

Do not schedule the strongest setting for every run by default. A lighter daily routine plus occasional intensive cleaning can be more practical than repeated whole-home deep runs, especially when noise or runtime is a concern.

Add keep-out zones for places the robot should avoid

Use app keep-out zones around spaces where the robot should not travel: a floor-level cable cluster, a pet-feeding area, fragile objects, a step that is not reliably mapped or a room being used for storage. iRobot describes keep-out zones as areas the robot should avoid.

Keep-out-zone checklist

  • Draw the zone on the saved map with enough margin that the robot cannot brush the boundary.
  • Keep the zone rectangular and simple where possible; complicated outlines are harder to verify.
  • Run a short test in a nearby room and confirm the robot respects the boundary.
  • Review zones after moving furniture or remapping the home.

A keep-out zone blocks access; it is not a lower-suction or no-mop setting. The 105 Vac has no mopping operation, so do not apply Combo no-mop instructions to it.

What to do when stronger settings do not improve pickup

Settings cannot compensate for a dirty brush path, loaded filter or obstruction in the vacuum channel. iRobot’s support guidance recommends inspecting and cleaning the brushes and the vacuum path when debris pickup remains poor.

Maintenance troubleshooting sequence

  1. Stop the robot and turn it over on a clear surface.
  2. Inspect the main brush area for hair, threads and compacted debris; remove buildup according to the Roomba 105 owner’s guide.
  3. Check the side brush and its housing for wrapped fibers.
  4. Remove and inspect the filter. Clean or replace it only as the owner’s guide permits; do not reinstall a wet filter.
  5. Inspect the intake and vacuum path for a blockage.
  6. Empty the bin or confirm that the AutoEmpty dock is transferring debris correctly, if your package includes that dock.
  7. Run a small test job at the previous suction and pass settings before making further changes.

If pickup improves after cleaning, keep the normal setting and shorten the maintenance interval. If it does not, consult the model-specific owner’s guide or iRobot support rather than assuming that maximum suction is always better.

For a Combo, a no-mop zone prevents mopping in a mapped area, while a general keep-out zone prevents the robot from entering. The 105 Vac has neither a water tank nor a mopping mode, so adding Combo instructions to a Vac setup can lead you to search for controls that do not exist.

Recommended starting profiles

Profile Rooms or area Suction Passes Use case
Daily maintenance Most occupied rooms Standard or Normal One Routine dust and crumbs.
Traffic-zone clean Entryway, kitchen, pet route Higher than daily baseline Two Visible grit, hair or recurring debris.
Quiet clean Lightly used rooms Lower setting if available One Cleaning while people are home.
Spot response One small area Use the app’s Spot Clean behavior Repeated cleaning for up to five minutes Fresh, localized spills.

These are starting profiles, not guarantees. Floor type, furniture, debris load and map accuracy determine whether a setting works in your home.

Quick troubleshooting decisions

It misses an entire room

Check whether the room was selected or skipped, then inspect the map and doorway boundary. Correct the map or create a custom clean before raising suction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cleans but leaves fine dust

Inspect the filter, brush area and vacuum path first. After maintenance, try a higher suction level or a second pass only in the affected room.

It is too loud

Lower suction for routine rooms and reserve the higher setting for traffic zones. General iRobot guidance associates stronger suction with more noise, but does not provide a 105-specific decibel figure.

The robot runs out of time before finishing

Reduce whole-home pass count, target rooms instead of the full map and reserve intensive settings for dirty areas. Also check that the brush path is clear; resistance from wrapped hair can waste cleaning time.

It enters a place it should avoid

Verify that the keep-out zone is saved on the current map and large enough to cover the approach. Remap or redraw it after furniture changes.
