Living far apart does not make a relationship a scam. The risk rises when distance is used to avoid reasonable verification or an in-person meeting, while the person also pushes secrecy, moves you off a dating platform quickly, gives inconsistent identity details, or asks for money, account access, images, or investments. Treat any financial request from an online love interest you have not met as a stop signal: do not send funds, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payment-app payments, or investment money.
What separates legitimate long-distance dating from a romance scam?
A genuine long-distance relationship can begin online and remain geographically separated for practical reasons. Partners may have demanding jobs, immigration or travel limitations, health concerns, family responsibilities, or financial constraints. Distance is therefore a circumstance, not proof of fraud.
A romance scam is a confidence fraud. The scammer creates or borrows an identity, builds emotional trust, and then exploits that trust for money, access to financial accounts, personal information, or compromising images. A polished profile, attractive photographs, a convincing job history, and intense conversations do not authenticate the person behind the account.
The safest distinction is behavioral. Consider the whole pattern rather than trying to diagnose a person from one clue:

None of these dimensions proves that someone is genuine or fraudulent on its own. Together they help you decide whether to slow down, verify independently, or end contact.
How romance scammers build trust
Official consumer and law-enforcement guidance describes a recurring sequence:
- Initial contact: A person approaches through a dating service, social network, game, or another online community.
- Rapid intimacy: They mirror your interests, provide constant attention, and describe a future together before you have met.
- Separation: They encourage private communication away from the original platform, where safety tools and moderation are weaker.
- Distance or unavailability: They claim to be working abroad, stationed far away, traveling, or otherwise unable to meet.
- The crisis or opportunity: A medical bill, travel cost, legal problem, family emergency, blocked account, or supposedly profitable investment appears.
- Escalation: After one payment, they invent another urgent need, ask for larger sums, seek your account credentials, or ask you to move money for them.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also warns about supposed investment help, including pitches involving digital assets, foreign exchange, or precious metals. A romantic partner who wants to manage your investments or direct you to a trading platform is asking for a financial decision, not demonstrating love.

A request for money is the clearest red flag
Do not send money to an online romantic interest you have not met in person. The explanation may sound compassionate or time-sensitive, but the payment method is often designed to be difficult to reverse. Common requests include:

- Airfare, visas, hotel costs, customs fees, or other travel expenses
- Emergency medical treatment, hospital bills, or help after an accident
- Rent, debt, legal fees, or a supposedly frozen bank account
- Gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment-app transfers
- Access to your bank account, payment account, identity documents, or one-time security codes
- Investment deposits, “loans,” or an instruction to receive and forward money
The FBI’s plain-language advice from Special Agent Christine Beining is: “If you don’t know them, don’t send money.” Treat the request as unsafe even if the person has supplied photographs, made video calls, or knows many personal details. A real person can still be dishonest, compromised, or using a stolen identity.
Repeated excuses for not meeting or video chatting
Being unable to meet once is normal. Persistent refusal is different, especially when it continues for months and coincides with a request for money. The FBI advises caution when someone repeatedly cancels, will not use a live video call, or always has a new explanation for why a meeting cannot happen. This is precautionary guidance, not a universal deadline that proves a relationship is fraudulent.
Pressure to leave the platform and keep secrets
Scammers may push you to encrypted or private messaging immediately, ask you not to tell friends, or describe everyone who questions the relationship as jealous or unsupportive. Isolation removes the outside perspectives that often expose inconsistencies. A legitimate partner should tolerate a normal level of privacy and allow you to discuss a new relationship with people you trust.

Inconsistent identity details
Watch for contradictions in a person’s age, work location, military or professional history, family situation, time zone, or travel schedule. One typo is not evidence; a pattern of changing answers, evasive explanations, and mismatched photographs is more significant. Compare what the person says over time instead of relying on a single conversation.

Requests for intimate images or sensitive information
A person who asks for sexual images, identity documents, passwords, banking details, or authentication codes is creating additional risk. Intimate images can be used for blackmail, while account information can enable identity theft or unauthorized transfers. You can decline without explaining or negotiating.
Investment coaching from a romantic contact
Romance-linked investment fraud often starts with a promise to teach you a supposedly simple strategy. The person may show fabricated profits, direct you to a platform, or insist that you act quickly. Do not transfer funds, install software at their direction, or allow remote access to your device. Independent financial advice should never depend on maintaining a secret relationship.
How to check a profile without pretending you can prove it is real
Verification can uncover reused images and contradictions, but no online check certifies a person’s identity. A clean search result is not proof that a profile is authentic, and a person may be real while misrepresenting their intentions.

Do this before blocking the account.
- Run a reverse-image search: Search the profile photograph and distinctive images. Reuse under another name, stock-photo results, or a biography that belongs to someone else is a warning sign. Private or newly uploaded images may not produce a result.
- Search the claimed occupation: The FTC suggests searching a person’s stated job or profession together with the word “scammer.” Treat results as leads to investigate, not automatic proof.
- Ask consistent questions over time: Request ordinary details about locations, schedules, work, and family. Compare answers rather than conducting an interrogation.
- Use live, contextual verification: A live video call can reduce some uncertainty, but it cannot establish good intentions. Do not let one successful call override a money request or other risk signals.
- Consult someone you trust: Show the messages to a friend or relative who is not emotionally invested. Scammers often object when an outside person is included.
- Verify independently: If the person names an employer, charity, investment service, or travel problem, locate the organization through an independent search and contact it using its published channel. Do not use a link or telephone number supplied by the romantic contact.
What you should never do for an online love interest
- Send cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payment-app transfers, or investment funds.
- Receive money into your account and forward it elsewhere. That can make you a money mule and expose you to criminal or banking consequences.
- Share passwords, one-time codes, bank details, identity documents, or remote access to a device.
- Borrow from friends, take out a loan, sell assets, or conceal a payment from family to meet an online partner’s demand.
- Click unfamiliar payment, investment, or account-verification links sent in a private message.
- Send intimate images when you cannot independently establish who will receive them.
Set a simple boundary early: “I do not send money or share financial access with someone I have not met.” The reaction is informative. Respect for the boundary lowers concern; anger, guilt, threats, or a new emergency raises it.

What to do if you suspect a romance scam
1. Stop the financial and emotional escalation
Do not argue about whether the person is a scammer. Stop responding, do not send another “final” payment, and do not click further links. Block the account after preserving evidence. If you feel threatened or are being blackmailed, prioritize physical safety and contact local emergency or victim-support services.
2. Report the account and the fraud
Use the dating or social platform’s reporting function and attach the relevant evidence. In the United States, report fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Internet-crime complaints can be filed with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. These U.S. channels do not replace local police, a bank’s fraud department, or authorities in another country.
3. Contact the payment provider immediately
Call the bank, card issuer, wire service, cryptocurrency exchange, or payment app using a number from its official website or statement. Explain that the transaction involved suspected fraud and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled, or investigated. Recovery is time-sensitive and is never guaranteed. Do not pay a second company that promises to recover your money for an upfront fee; that is a common follow-on fraud.

Change passwords that may have been exposed, beginning with email, banking, and payment accounts. Turn on multifactor authentication, review recent logins and transactions, and notify the financial institution about unauthorized activity. If you shared identity documents, ask the relevant issuing or financial agencies what protective steps apply in your jurisdiction.

5. Tell a trusted person
Scammers rely on embarrassment and secrecy. Telling someone promptly can prevent another payment, help preserve evidence, and give you support while accounts and reports are handled.
How common are romance-scam losses?
FTC consumer reporting shows the scale of the problem in the United States. An FTC consumer alert published in February 2024 reported that consumers lost more than $1 billion in 2023 to romance scammers. An earlier FTC report published in February 2022 recorded $547 million sent in 2021. These are agency-reported losses for the stated years, not a count of every incident, and they should not be treated as worldwide totals or directly combined as a trend line.
The FBI describes the underlying conduct plainly: “Behind the veil of romance, it’s a criminal enterprise like any other.” The emotional story is a tactic; the financial transfer is the objective.
A practical decision rule
You do not need courtroom-level proof to protect yourself. If an online romantic contact combines distance with repeated avoidance of verification, pressure to isolate, inconsistent identity details, and any request for money or access, pause the relationship and report it. If the person accepts your boundaries, answers reasonable questions, supports independent verification, keeps trusted people involved, and never asks you to fund or move money, the risk pattern is lower—but continue ordinary online safety until you have met and verified the person in real life.
