If you mean Roman-numeral page numbers, Google Docs does not document an automatic Roman-numeral numbering style in its current help. The practical workaround is to type numerals into footers yourself, which means they will not update automatically when pages change. If you mean Roman-numeral section headings, use heading styles instead.
First, choose what you want to number

How to add Roman-numeral page labels manually
- Switch the document to Pages format. On a computer, go to File > Page setup, select Pages, and confirm. Page numbers, headers, and footers are unavailable in Pageless format. See Google’s instructions for headers, footers, and page numbers.
- Insert section breaks where the footer content should change. Use Insert > Break, then choose Section break (next page) or Section break (continuous), as appropriate. Section breaks let you separate parts of the document; see Google’s page-break and margin instructions.
- Set the section footer. Click the footer in the section and, if its content should differ from the preceding section, turn off Link to previous. Google’s header and footer guidance covers section-specific controls.
- Type the Roman numeral into the footer. Enter the label you want on each relevant page, such as
i,ii, oriii. Repeat or edit the footer text as needed for the pages in that section. - Check the labels after editing the document. Because the numerals are typed text, they will not renumber themselves when you add, remove, or rearrange pages. Review them after pagination changes.
Use ordinary page numbers when automatic numbering matters
For standard numeric page numbers, use Insert > Page elements > Page number. Choose More options to adjust alignment or apply numbering to a section. Google’s official instructions document these page-number controls. They do not establish an automatic Roman-numeral style.
If you meant Roman-numeral headings
Type the Roman numeral as part of each heading, then apply the appropriate heading style so the titles appear in the document outline and can be used in a table of contents. To view the outline, choose View > Show outline. For a table of contents, use Google’s instructions for titles, headings, and tables of contents. These tools structure section titles; they do not convert page numbers.

Fix common problems
- Page-number or footer controls are missing: Check that the document uses Pages format rather than Pageless.
- A footer repeats in a section where it should differ: Check the section break and whether Link to previous is enabled.
- Your Roman numerals no longer match the pages: Since they are manual footer text, update and verify them after adding or removing content.
A Google Docs Product Expert volunteer, Jo S. Diamond, wrote in a community answer dated October 20, 2022, that Docs did not support Roman-numeral page numbers and recommended typing them manually. That is community guidance, not a statement from Google’s current help page; Google’s current documented controls cover page and section numbering without specifying a Roman-numeral style.
