Roman bookshops existed by the late Republic, in Cicero’s lifetime, more than 2,000 years ago. They sold Greek and Latin books, and a customer could sometimes ask a bookseller to make a copy. But these were not modern bookstores: texts were copied by hand, private exchange continued alongside retail, and the surviving evidence is fragmentary.

When did Roman bookshops appear?

The earliest evidence for bookshops in Rome dates to Cicero’s period in the late Republic. Literary references and inscriptions preserve names of booksellers, including the Sosii, Secundus and Atrectus, and associate shops with locations such as the Argiletum. The evidence also points to bookshops beyond Rome, including at Lugdunum. In the second century CE, the Vicus Sandaliarius is described as a concentration of bookshops. DaLiB’s overview of Roman bookshops surveys these locations and sellers.

The record is scattered rather than a complete census. Classics professor Peter White estimated that there were “probably between 50 and 75” allusions involving bookshops; this is an approximate count of references, not a tally of shops, booksellers or customers. The University of Chicago Magazine’s 2008 interview with White emphasizes how limited the surviving evidence is.

What could a customer buy?

Roman shops could offer Greek and Latin texts, both works by authors and established writings. The formats included bookrolls and, in some cases, codices. The Oxford Academic chapter “Bookshops in the Literary Culture of Rome” discusses this range of books and formats.

A shop might have copies ready for sale, but it could also be involved in producing copies. A bookseller might acquire a text, receive one from an author, or copy it from a private collection. These are documented routes by which works could reach a shop; they should not be mistaken for one standard operating model followed by every bookseller.

Could a bookseller make a copy on request?

Yes. The evidence indicates that a customer could ask a bookseller to produce a copy, rather than choose only from books already on hand. White described the distinction this way: “you can go to a bookshop and ask the question that you can’t ask at Powell’s: ‘Can you make me a copy?’” His point was that before printing, a text had to be recreated by someone copying it onto fresh papyrus. The interview discusses this made-to-order aspect of the trade.

Commercial bookselling existed alongside private copying and circulation among friends and patrons. Buying from a shop was one way to obtain a text, not the only way.

Why did handwritten copies contain errors?

Every manuscript copy was made by hand, so a text could change as it was reproduced. Ancient writers complained about poor-quality copies and unreliable copyists. Copies could be checked and corrected, but checking did not guarantee that every error would be found; Johnston’s survey describes correction as a separate process for copies. The DaLiB overview also notes that authors sought dependable production and that buyers could consult grammarians about a book’s quality. These concerns show that reliability mattered, not that every Roman book was inaccurate.

This differed from print-based book production: a Roman bookseller could supply a particular handwritten copy, but there was no mechanically identical print run behind each copy. Readers and authors therefore had reason to care about who made a manuscript and how carefully it was checked. For an account of the trade and its quality concerns, see DaLiB’s overview and Johnston’s historical survey, The Private Life of the Romans, chapter X.

What can the evidence tell us—and what can’t it?

Ancient references and inscriptions establish that Roman bookshops, named booksellers and commercial copying existed. They also show a book trade with varied stock and more than one way for texts to circulate. They do not provide a complete picture of shop inventories, customer numbers, or the exact practices of every bookseller. The surviving allusions are too few and intermittent to treat Roman bookselling as a fully documented counterpart to a modern bookstore industry.
