Choose a long-term-support (LTS) release if you want a supported software baseline and a documented window for planning maintenance. Choose a rolling release if newer packages arriving continuously matter more than minimizing ongoing update work. Neither model guarantees trouble-free updates: the right choice depends on your time, support requirements, hardware needs and ability to recover from problems.
What the two update models mean
Rolling release and LTS describe different parts of a Linux distribution’s policy. A rolling release describes how software versions arrive: rather than moving from one numbered major release to another on a fixed schedule, users keep one installation current through ongoing upgrades. LTS describes a support commitment for a particular release. It is possible to compare these models usefully, but they are not exact opposites: one is chiefly about software delivery, the other about how long a release is maintained.
That distinction prevents a common category error. A distribution can use discrete releases without offering a long support period, as Ubuntu’s interim releases do. Conversely, a rolling project can have detailed maintenance guidance without promising a numbered-release end date. Compare the actual policy, package scope and update procedure instead of treating a label as a complete guarantee.

Rolling release: one installation, ongoing upgrades
In a rolling distribution such as Arch Linux, users maintain an installation by applying regular, complete system upgrades. New packages are made available as they are ready; this does not mean every package changes at the same time. The appeal is access to newer software without waiting for a separate major distribution release. The trade-off is that staying current is part of the maintenance routine, and changes can sometimes need attention.

Arch’s documentation describes the user as responsible for maintaining the rolling system. Its guidance recommends performing full upgrades regularly so users receive current bug fixes and security updates and avoid accumulating a large set of changes that may later require manual intervention. In practical terms, that means updating the system as a whole rather than selecting a few packages while leaving the rest at older versions. Arch states that partial upgrades are unsupported.
A rolling model also does not imply that every update is unstable or that all packages move in lockstep. Packages are released when ready according to the project’s packaging and testing process. The relevant question is whether you can follow that process, read update notices and investigate an occasional configuration or dependency change.
LTS: a release with a longer support window
An LTS distribution release gives users a defined version to maintain for a stated period, subject to the distribution’s scope and support terms. Packages can receive security maintenance while the larger release baseline remains in place. That can make maintenance windows easier to plan, but it does not mean that every package is covered for the same length of time, that security updates are optional, or that the installation never needs a release upgrade.
The baseline can be valuable when an application, classroom, office or service needs a predictable environment. You can schedule a future release transition instead of treating every upstream package change as an immediate system-wide decision. However, “five years” or another headline duration must be matched to the exact release, component and support tier. A package outside the stated scope may follow different maintenance terms.
Fixed releases that are not LTS
A fixed-release distribution publishes major releases at intervals. Some releases have a longer support period than others. Ubuntu’s interim releases are an example of a shorter-supported option aimed at users who want newer kernels, languages and toolchains than its LTS baseline offers. They are neither rolling releases nor the long-support choice: the shorter support period means users must plan release upgrades more often.
Ubuntu publishes releases every six months. Every fourth release, in April every two years, is an LTS release. Interim releases receive nine months of support, so they can provide a newer discrete baseline without committing you to continuous upgrades. The trade-off is a much tighter upgrade calendar: skipping a transition can leave less time to test and move before support ends.
How the models compare
| Decision | Rolling release | Fixed release or LTS |
|---|---|---|
| How software arrives | New versions can arrive continuously; users should expect regular full system upgrades. | Major releases are discrete. Package changes occur within a release, while moving to a later major release is a separate transition. |
| Support horizon | Do not assume a numbered-release-style end date. Check the project’s own maintenance policy; Arch’s reviewed guidance describes rolling maintenance rather than a fixed LTS term. | Depends on distribution, release, package component and support tier. Ubuntu states five years of standard security maintenance for LTS packages in main. Debian documents a five-year release lifecycle: three years of full support followed by two years of LTS. |
| Ongoing work | Update regularly, follow project guidance and be prepared to handle occasional package or configuration changes. | Install security updates and plan eventual release upgrades, but a supported release can provide a longer-lived baseline between major transitions. |
| Newer software | Often a better fit when current packages are a priority, subject to the distribution’s packaging and update process. | An LTS baseline favors a longer support runway. A shorter fixed-release cadence, such as Ubuntu interim releases, is another option for newer software. |
| Operational risk | Updates may require intervention; testing first is prudent when downtime is costly. This is not evidence that every rolling update breaks. | Fewer major transitions may be needed during a support window, but no release label guarantees zero bugs or compatibility with every application. |
Think of the table as a workload comparison, not a stability ranking. A developer who needs a current compiler may accept frequent package movement, while a service owner may value a change window that can be rehearsed months in advance. Both users still need security updates, backups and a recovery plan.

What the support figures actually cover
Support numbers are useful only when read with their qualifications. The distribution, release, package component and support tier determine what a headline duration means. A five-year figure should not be treated as a promise that every application installed on a system will receive updates for five years.
| Distribution and release type | Published cadence or lifecycle | Scope to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu LTS | Ubuntu publishes releases every six months; every fourth release, in April every two years, is an LTS release. LTS packages in main receive five years of standard security maintenance. |
The five-year standard commitment cited here applies to packages in main. Coverage for universe and maintenance beyond the standard period involve separate Ubuntu Pro / Expanded Security Maintenance terms. Check the exact release and package coverage. |
| Ubuntu interim | Nine months of support. | Choose it only if you are prepared to move to later releases on a shorter timetable than an LTS user. Ubuntu says security updates generally do not introduce new functionality, reflecting its aim to preserve backward compatibility. |
| Debian release lifecycle | Five years total: three years of full support followed by two years of LTS. | Exact dates and status depend on the particular release. Consult Debian’s release index for the version you plan to use. |
| Arch Linux rolling model | The reviewed Arch guidance does not state a numbered-release LTS support term. | Its model is continued maintenance of one installation with regular full upgrades. Do not infer a fixed end date or a guarantee of identical package lifetimes from the rolling label. |
Ubuntu’s security-maintenance wording also matters: security updates generally do not introduce new functionality because the project seeks to preserve backward compatibility. That does not freeze every behavior forever, but it explains why an LTS baseline can be easier to operate than a stream intended to deliver the latest feature versions.
Debian’s five-year figure is a lifecycle summary, divided into three years of full support and two years of LTS. The exact calendar dates vary by release, so check the release index for the version you intend to deploy rather than copying a date from another Debian release.
Choose based on what “stable” means to you
People use “stable” to mean different things: a familiar interface, few changes, dependable security maintenance, compatibility with a particular application, a long support period or little hands-on work. Those are not interchangeable outcomes. Decide which one matters most before choosing a distribution model.

- You need a supported release to remain in place for several years.
- You have limited time to investigate frequent software changes.
- You need to schedule release transitions around work, classes or other commitments.
- Your applications and hardware work with the release baseline you are choosing.
Before installing, verify the support end date and which packages are covered for the exact release. If your requirement is specifically that a certain application receive security maintenance, check that application’s package component and support terms rather than relying on the distribution’s headline LTS duration.
LTS is also a sensible default for a machine maintained by someone who is not available every day. A longer window gives you time to stage updates, document the configuration and coordinate an eventual upgrade. It does not excuse postponing security updates indefinitely: the system remains safer and more supportable when applicable fixes are installed during the supported period.
Choose rolling when newer packages justify regular attention
- Access to current packages is more important to you than minimizing maintenance.
- You can apply regular full upgrades and follow distribution announcements.
- You are willing to troubleshoot a package or configuration change occasionally.
- You can test updates or recover the system if an update conflicts with your setup.
Arch’s guidance recommends regular full upgrades and warns that partial upgrades are unsupported. That distinction matters: do not treat a rolling installation as a collection of packages to update selectively without regard to the rest of the system. The project also recommends testing updates on a non-critical duplicate system when the installation is production-critical or downtime is unacceptable. That is a risk-control measure, not a prediction that an update will fail.

For a personal workstation, “regularly” still needs a meaning you can sustain. If you leave a rolling installation untouched for long periods, you may face more simultaneous changes when you return. A documented update routine, a way to read project notices and a tested recovery path are part of the model’s practical cost in time, even when the software itself is free.
Choose a shorter fixed-release cadence as a middle path
If an LTS baseline feels too old but continuous upgrades sound like too much responsibility, consider whether a fixed release with a shorter support term fits better. Ubuntu interim releases provide one example: they are supported for nine months and target users seeking newer kernels, languages and toolchains. This trades a longer maintenance window for more frequent release upgrades. It is not a way to get both the newest packages continuously and an LTS-length support period.
The middle path works only if the upgrade calendar fits your life. A nine-month support period can require an upgrade roughly twice a year as new releases arrive. Treat each transition as a project: confirm application compatibility, reserve maintenance time and keep a rollback or recovery option.
A practical decision process
- Write down the actual requirement. Is the priority newer packages, a longer support window, application compatibility, fewer major changes, or a predictable maintenance schedule? Avoid using “stable” as a substitute for naming the outcome.
- Check the exact support scope. For a fixed release, identify its end date and the package component or support tier relevant to your software. For Ubuntu LTS, distinguish standard maintenance for
mainfrom separate terms foruniverseor maintenance beyond the standard period. For Debian, check the exact version’s release status and dates. - Estimate your maintenance capacity. Be realistic about whether you can update regularly, read project notices and address changes. A model that is technically attractive but routinely neglected is a poor fit.
- Set your downtime tolerance. On a personal system, a maintenance interruption may be inconvenient; on a work or production system, the consequences can be higher. Decide what outage you can accept before selecting an update cadence.
- Plan testing and recovery. If downtime is unacceptable, test changes on a non-critical duplicate system before relying on them in production. Decide how you will recover important data and services if an update causes a problem; do not treat a release label as a substitute for an operational plan.
- Reassess when circumstances change. A distribution that suits a personal desktop may not suit a service with strict uptime requirements. Revisit the choice when your hardware, software needs, support obligations or available maintenance time changes.
For a rolling system, add a check that your update command performs a complete upgrade and that you know where the project posts urgent notices. For an LTS or fixed release, add a calendar reminder for the support endpoint and the next major-release decision. In either case, confirm that backups can actually restore the files and services you consider essential.
Common mistakes when comparing update models
Assuming “rolling” means every package changes at once
Rolling describes the continuing delivery model, not a synchronized replacement of every application on every update. Arch says packages are released when ready. The useful question is whether you are comfortable applying regular full upgrades and following the project’s instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming LTS means every installed program is covered for the full term
Support commitments have boundaries. Ubuntu’s five-year standard security-maintenance statement applies to LTS packages in main, not indiscriminately to all software on the system. For Debian, the project-level five-year lifecycle does not remove the need to check a particular release’s dates and status.
Treating fewer major transitions as zero maintenance
A longer-lived baseline can reduce how often you face a major release transition. It does not remove the need to install security updates, check support status or plan what happens when the release reaches the end of its support window.

Updating a rolling system selectively
Mixing old and new packages can leave an unsupported partial-upgrade state. Arch specifically directs users toward complete, regular upgrades. If you need a package held at an older version, verify that the distribution supports the arrangement before assuming it is harmless.
Calling one model universally more secure or reliable
The available policies do not establish a universal security winner or a measured breakage rate. Security depends on the relevant package receiving updates and those updates being applied; reliability depends on the workload, compatibility needs and operational practices as well as the release model.

Confusing current hardware support with a guarantee
Newer kernels and toolchains can be a reason to prefer a rolling or shorter fixed-release model, but availability still depends on the distribution’s packaging process. Check the actual kernel, driver and application requirements rather than assuming a label guarantees support for a particular device.

How long does Debian support a release?
Debian documents a five-year lifecycle: three years of full support followed by two years of LTS. Exact end dates depend on the particular release, so check Debian’s release index for the version you plan to use.
Can I update only one package on Arch Linux?
Arch’s guidance says partial upgrades are unsupported. Maintain the rolling installation with regular, complete system upgrades rather than selectively mixing newer and older package sets.
Should I test rolling updates before installing them on a production machine?
Yes, when downtime is costly. Arch recommends testing updates on a non-critical duplicate system when an installation is production-critical or downtime is unacceptable. This is a sensible operational control, not a claim that every update will fail.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does Ubuntu’s five-year LTS support cover every application I install?
No. The standard five-year commitment cited here applies to Ubuntu LTS packages in the main component. Universe coverage and maintenance beyond the standard period have separate Ubuntu Pro or Expanded Security Maintenance terms. Check the package and support tier you actually need.
What should I choose if I want newer software but not continuous upgrades?
Consider a shorter fixed-release cadence, such as Ubuntu’s interim releases. You get discrete releases rather than a rolling stream, but the nine-month support period requires more frequent release upgrades than an LTS release.
The Bottom Line
Choose LTS for a longer, documented maintenance runway and easier scheduling. Choose rolling for continuously refreshed packages when you can update regularly, follow project guidance and recover from occasional changes. If you want newer software without continuous upgrades, consider a shorter fixed-release cadence and accept its more frequent release transitions. Verify the exact support scope, define downtime tolerance and test your recovery plan before putting either model on an important system.
