Yes, Roku offers a family-friendly option, but Roku’s documentation does not establish a separate, universal “Family Channel.” Look for Kids & Family on The Roku Channel, and use Kid & Teen Mode to control which participating apps are available to a child. Availability and controls depend on the app, device, and viewing path.
What Roku means by “family channel”
Roku’s relevant option is the Kids & Family section on The Roku Channel. Roku’s support instructions describe it as an app or content option that can be allowed in Kid & Teen Mode; they do not establish a standalone channel named “Family Channel” that is available universally on Roku devices. The Roku Channel is available through different devices and platforms depending on location. Roku lists it on Roku devices, the web, and mobile in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and on Roku devices in Mexico. Roku also documents access on compatible Samsung Smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices. Check Roku’s current availability information for your region and device.

Kid & Teen Mode lets the Roku account holder choose participating apps for the mode and set a rating limit for content Roku controls. A parent must install an app before it can be approved, and not every app participates. In this mode, search, browsing, guest mode, and voice functionality are restricted. Roku says purchases and subscriptions made through Roku Pay are restricted, but a child may still be able to make purchases directly through another provider using a different payment method.

Before a parent sets a rating limit, Kid & Teen Mode allows only G, TV-G, and TV-Y content. The rating limit applies to The Roku Channel and Roku subscriptions such as Howdy; it does not set ratings restrictions inside other streaming apps. Roku states that it does not control apps provided by other providers, including their in-app experience and ads.
Set up Kids & Family for a child
- Create a Roku account PIN: Use Roku’s account PIN settings. Roku describes this as a four-digit PIN; the PIN help page explains how to create, change, or remove it.
- Open Kid & Teen Mode: On your Roku streaming device, go to Settings > Kid & Teen Mode.
- Choose app access: Open App access and allow The Roku Channel and/or Kids & Family on The Roku Channel where available. Install any app first, and approve only apps that participate in the mode.
- Set a rating limit: Open Rating limits and choose the maximum rating appropriate for your household. This rating setting applies to Roku-controlled content, not to content in other providers’ apps.
- Review each approved service: Set that provider’s own parental controls and purchase protections before allowing its app. Roku Pay restrictions do not necessarily prevent a purchase made directly through another provider.

Check controls beyond Roku
Roku’s account PIN does not govern every app or screen. Set parental controls within each third-party streaming service your child can access, and check its purchase settings. If you use a Roku TV, treat Live TV controls as a separate setting for the Live TV input: the Roku account PIN does not block antenna viewing. When you need Roku hardware
A Roku streaming device is one way to access The Roku Channel if your television does not otherwise support it. It is not the only route: depending on location and compatibility, Roku also documents access through the web, mobile, compatible Samsung Smart TVs, and Amazon Fire TV devices. Roku does not establish a specific device model or price as necessary for family content; check the availability details for your setup.
