Roku Volume Leveling is designed to reduce abrupt changes in loudness between shows, apps, and commercials. On a supported device, you can turn it on during playback; choose a lower setting if you want some volume variation, or a higher one for more even levels. The trade-off is that active volume modes may affect surround-sound output on some setups.
What Roku Volume Leveling does
Roku describes Leveling as a way to keep volume more consistent across different types of entertainment, so you do not have to adjust it as often when content changes. Its support page says: “Leveling: Enables consistent volume across different types of entertainment so you do not have to change the volume every time you switch apps or a commercial comes on.” This describes the feature’s intended behavior; availability and results can vary by device, app, and audio format. Roku Support explains volume modes and device-specific setup.
Roku offers three volume modes with different intended listening results:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Mode | Intended result |
|---|---|
| Off | Leaves audio in its normal, unmodified mode. |
| Leveling | Helps make volume more consistent across content. |
| Night | Raises quieter sounds and reduces louder ones for less disruptive listening. |
These are not guarantees that every program or setup will sound the same. If you use Leveling, Roku also provides Low, Medium, and High settings. Low allows more volume variation between shows, commercials, and apps; High keeps volume more even. Roku’s support guidance lists Medium but does not define it more precisely, so there is no published technical threshold or decibel target to rely on.

How to turn on Volume Leveling
The available menu labels and paths depend on your Roku device. Roku says the feature is not available on every streaming device, and some apps may assign a different function to the Star button.
On a Roku TV
- Start playing a show or movie.
- Press the Star button on the remote.
- Select Sound Settings > Sound Mode > Customize sound mode.
- Scroll to Volume Leveling and choose Low, Medium, or High.
On a Roku Streaming Player or Streambar
While something is playing, press Star > Sound Settings > Customize sound mode. The choices shown depend on your model and device. For a Streambar, Roku also lists Home > Settings > Audio > Volume mode as a settings-menu route. Consult Roku’s current volume-mode instructions if your menus differ.

If the Star button does not open sound settings
Some apps use the Star button for another purpose. Roku’s workaround is to open a different app, such as The Roku Channel, change the sound setting there, and then return to the original app. The setting may not be offered on every device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoosing a level for your listening setup
- Try Low if you want some natural variation to remain while reducing the need for frequent adjustments.
- Try High if your priority is keeping levels more even from one piece of content to another.
- Try Medium if you want an intermediate choice, but note that Roku does not specify its behavior more technically in its support guidance.
There is no universally best setting: choose based on what sounds comfortable in your room and with the content you watch. If you are troubleshooting a sudden change in loudness, compare the result with Leveling set to Off and then select the setting you prefer.

What Leveling can mean for surround sound
Roku warns that volume modes are unavailable with some audio formats. It also says streamed movies and shows using formats such as Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos may be converted to stereo when volume modes are active. The wording is conditional: it does not mean every Roku device converts every surround signal whenever Leveling is enabled.
If you use an audio/video receiver or soundbar and want to hear a surround format, Roku says you may need to set volume modes to Off. Check the settings and signal path for your specific device if surround output matters; device and format support vary.

When Speech Clarity may be a better fit
If the main problem is understanding dialogue rather than changes in overall loudness, Speech Clarity is a separate option on supported Roku audio devices. Roku describes it as making dialogue easier to hear relative to other scene audio, without raising the loudness of the whole scene. It is not the same feature as Volume Leveling. See Roku Support’s Speech Clarity guidance for supported-device context.
