Yes—some Roku remotes can control your television’s volume, but Roku itself does not guarantee that every remote will. The result depends on whether you have a Roku TV or a separate Roku streaming player, which remote model you own, and whether the remote has been configured for your television. A compatible remote may control volume, mute, and power; another Roku remote may have no TV controls at all. Some television models support volume control but not power control.
This guide shows how to identify your setup, configure TV controls, understand IR and HDMI-CEC behavior, and fix the common cases in which the volume buttons or voice commands do nothing.
Start with the Roku device and remote
“Roku remote” describes several different products. A remote supplied with a Roku TV is not equivalent to the basic remote bundled with every Roku streaming player. Look at the physical buttons and the device connected to the television before troubleshooting.
| Roku setup | Remote clues | Typical TV-control capability | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku TV with a simple remote | Dedicated TV power, volume, mute and often sleep-timer buttons | Direct control of the Roku TV’s power and audio | Button layout and functions can vary by Roku TV model and region. |
| Roku streaming player with a basic/simple player remote | No TV volume or mute buttons | Controls Roku menus and playback, not necessarily the television | Do not infer TV-volume support from the Roku name alone. |
| Roku streaming player with a compatible voice remote | Microphone or magnifying-glass voice button; some models also have TV power and volume keys | Can be configured for a connected TV’s volume and, where supported, power | TV-control capability is model- and TV-dependent and must be set up. |
| Voice remote without TV-control hardware | Voice button but no TV power, volume or mute keys | Roku voice search and player control | Voice search does not automatically mean TV-volume control. |
Roku’s simple-remote documentation describes the TV power, sleep-timer, volume and mute buttons supplied with a Roku TV. For a player, check the exact remote and device combination in Roku’s current compatibility information before buying a replacement.

Which Roku remotes can control a TV?
Roku identifies the Roku Voice Remote, Roku Voice Remote Pro and Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition as purchase options that can include TV-control capability. A compatible remote still needs to be programmed for the television. The exact supported functions depend on the remote generation and the TV model, so confirm compatibility for both pieces of hardware rather than choosing by the word “voice” alone. Roku’s current pairing and compatibility instructions are on its voice-remote setup page.
If your remote has no volume or mute buttons, it cannot add those functions through a menu setting. You need a compatible TV-control remote, the television’s own remote, or another remote that the TV supports.
How the volume signal reaches the TV
Infrared (IR)
IR remotes send a beam to the infrared receiver on the front of the television. The remote must point toward the TV and nothing can block the receiver. A simple check is to point the Roku remote at the TV, press a volume key, and then cover the front of the remote. If control stops when the front is covered, the remote is using IR for that function. Cabinets, soundbar placement and bright obstructions can interfere with the line of sight.

Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) sends commands through an HDMI connection instead of an infrared beam. CEC must be enabled in the TV’s settings, and manufacturers may use a branded name such as Anynet or SIMPLINK. Support is not uniform: one TV may accept CEC volume commands while another accepts only power, or does not implement the feature reliably. Roku states that voice commands for TV power or volume use CEC, so a voice command can fail even when physical buttons work if CEC is disabled.

Soundbars and AV receivers
A Roku remote does not directly operate every separate soundbar or AV receiver. With HDMI-CEC enabled, the Roku player can sometimes control audio through the HDMI chain, but each component must support the required CEC functions. An intermediate receiver can also prevent Roku from identifying the television during setup. For that reason, Roku recommends a direct Roku-to-TV connection while configuring TV controls; reconnect the receiver or soundbar after the test succeeds.
Set up TV volume control during first-time Roku setup
Initial setup is the easiest point to program a voice remote because Roku can identify the television while you perform a sound test.
- Connect the Roku player directly to an HDMI input on the television. If a soundbar or AV receiver is in between, temporarily remove it from the signal path.
- Turn the television on and raise its volume to an audible level. Make sure it is not muted.
- When Roku asks whether the voice remote should control TV power and volume, choose the option to set up TV controls.
- Point the remote at the television and follow the on-screen prompts. Roku may ask you to confirm that you hear a test sound or that the volume changed.
- Accept the result only after the volume test works. If you do not hear the test, check the TV’s input and mute status, then repeat the detection step or choose the correct TV brand when Roku offers a list.
- After setup, test volume up, volume down, mute and power separately. A successful volume test does not prove that power control is supported.
Roku’s step-by-step instructions are available at How to set up your Roku voice remote to control your TV. Menu wording can change with Roku software, so follow the on-screen description if it differs slightly from these labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up or rerun TV controls later
If you skipped the prompt or the television was replaced, rerun the TV-control wizard from the Roku home screen:

- Keep the TV audible and follow the sound-test prompts. Point the remote at the TV if the wizard is using IR.
On some software releases the labels or nesting differ. If you do not see the exact path, open the Remotes & devices area and look for the selected remote’s TV-control setup option. Roku’s power-and-volume troubleshooting guidance covers the same process for remotes that have stopped working.
When volume buttons do nothing
1. Confirm the remote can send TV commands
Check for dedicated volume, mute or TV-power buttons. A player remote without those keys cannot be made into a TV-volume remote by pairing it again. A voice button alone is not proof that TV controls are present.
2. Repeat the setup with the correct TV brand
Run Set up remote for TV control again and select the correct brand or code when prompted. During the sound test, the TV must be on the Roku’s HDMI input, unmuted and loud enough for you to hear the test. If the wrong brand code was accepted, the buttons may appear to work but send commands the TV does not understand.
3. Clear the IR path
For IR control, aim at the TV’s receiver and remove objects directly in front of it. Test from a normal seating position, then repeat with the remote’s front uncovered. A cabinet door, soundbar mounted over the receiver or a wall-mounted TV edge can block the signal.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Enable CEC for voice commands
Open the television’s system or HDMI settings and enable CEC. The setting may carry a manufacturer-specific name rather than “CEC.” Power-cycle the TV and Roku after changing it, then try the voice command again. Because CEC support varies, enabling it may restore power control, volume control or both—or neither on a TV with limited CEC implementation.
5. Remove intermediate audio equipment for testing
Disconnect the Roku player from the soundbar or AV receiver and connect it directly to the TV. Rerun TV-control setup and perform the sound test. If it works directly, reconnect the audio equipment and enable CEC on every component that is intended to pass commands. If it fails only after reconnection, the audio chain—not the Roku remote—may be dropping the command.
6. Check how the Roku player is powered
A Roku player powered from the television’s USB port can lose power when the TV turns off. Once unpowered, it cannot send a command to turn the TV back on. Roku recommends using wall power in this situation. This does not change volume behavior while the player is running, but it can look like a failed TV-control feature when the real problem is startup power.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →7. Separate volume failure from power failure
Some televisions support volume commands but not power commands through the selected remote method. Test each function independently. If volume and mute work but power does not, the result may be a TV compatibility limitation rather than a defective remote. Conversely, if no TV function works after a correct setup and clear signal path, the remote or TV model may not support the desired control.

Using a different remote with a Roku TV
Owners of a Roku TV can often program a cable, satellite or universal remote with the TV’s relevant code. Roku documents this process at its universal-remote code page. Basic compatibility commonly means power, volume and input selection. Navigation through Roku menus, playback controls and specialized buttons depend on the remote’s code set and may be unavailable.
A universal remote is therefore useful when you want one handset for several home-theater devices, but it is not an automatic replacement for full Roku navigation. Check the remote’s published Roku TV support and button mapping before purchasing.
Choosing a replacement Roku remote
If the original remote is broken or lacks TV buttons, look for a Roku voice remote with TV controls or a replacement Roku remote with volume buttons. Verify three things before ordering:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The replacement is compatible with your exact Roku player or Roku TV model.
- It includes TV power, volume and mute hardware if those are required.
- Your television model and connection method support the functions you expect, especially power control and CEC.
Roku’s listed voice-remote families include the Roku Voice Remote, Roku Voice Remote Pro and Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition, but lineups and compatibility can change. Use the current device-specific guidance rather than assuming that a newer remote works with every older player.
A short HDMI extender is a separate fit accessory for a Streaming Stick that cannot physically fit beside other cables. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K+ setup instructions describe that use. An extender does not add volume control or repair a TV-control configuration problem.
Control options at a glance
| Option | Volume control | Power control | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roku TV simple remote | Built-in TV volume and mute keys | Usually includes TV power | Single Roku TV setup | Exact TV model and supplied remote layout |
| Compatible Roku voice remote | Available after TV-control setup | May be available; not universal | Roku player connected to a TV | Remote model, TV compatibility and setup result |
| CEC through HDMI | Depends on TV and connected devices | May work independently of volume | HDMI systems with compatible CEC | CEC enabled under the TV’s branded setting |
| IR from the remote | Works when the TV accepts the programmed IR code | Works only if the code supports it | Direct line-of-sight rooms | Clear path to the TV’s IR receiver |
| Cable, satellite or universal remote | Often basic volume and mute | Often basic power and input | One remote for multiple devices | Roku TV code and available navigation buttons |
What to expect from voice commands
Voice commands for TV volume or power are separate from Roku’s voice search. The remote must support TV controls, the TV must be configured, and CEC-based commands require compatible CEC settings. If voice search works but “turn up the volume” does not, check CEC and TV compatibility rather than assuming the microphone is faulty. Physical volume keys may continue to work through IR even when the voice command path is unavailable.
Bottom line for a volume-control problem
Roku can control TV volume when the remote includes TV-control hardware and has been programmed for the specific television. Start by identifying the remote, run the TV-control setup with the Roku connected directly to the TV, and then check IR line of sight or CEC settings according to the method your equipment uses. If the remote has no TV buttons, or the television supports only a subset of commands, a compatible replacement remote or a properly coded universal remote is required.
