Roku should consider borrowing two useful ideas from Fire TV: household profiles that tailor recommendations, and navigation that makes it easier to find live, free, and app-based viewing. It should do so without making its home screen feel like an Amazon storefront. That is a recommendation based on documented platform features and a third-party comparison—not a report that Roku plans to copy Fire TV.

What Roku could borrow from Fire TV

Profiles that make a shared TV feel personal

Amazon says Fire TV profiles can keep watchlists, viewing history, recommendations, and watch progress separate, and can personalize Amazon Music. Profiles can also customize some apps, channels, and settings. A device can have up to six profiles, including up to four Amazon Kids profiles. Subscriptions, rentals, and purchases remain shared across profiles, and Amazon lists some older devices that do not support profiles. Those limits matter: profiles personalize parts of the experience, but they do not create separate household accounts for every purchase.

Roku could offer a similarly clear way for each household member to get relevant recommendations and resume their own viewing. The value is not simply having profile icons; it is reducing the chance that one person’s viewing habits shape everyone else’s home screen. Amazon’s documented feature details are on its Fire TV profiles help page.

Navigation that brings live and free viewing within reach

Fire TV organizes its home screen with destinations including My Stuff, Games, Find, Music & More, Free, Live, profiles, and Apps. Amazon describes Find as a place to search for videos and Amazon Appstore apps or browse categories; Live provides access to supported live-TV apps and subscriptions. Roku could borrow the clarity of having obvious places to explore live and free options, rather than making viewers hunt through individual apps.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

This would build on, rather than replace, Roku’s existing discovery tools. Roku advertises voice search across apps, and its feature history says the November 2025 OS update added search inside What to Watch and Live TV Zone. Availability can vary by region and device, so the feature history should be checked against a particular Roku model and market. See Roku’s OS feature history and Amazon’s Fire TV home-screen guide.

What Roku should preserve

Cross-service search and clear viewing choices

The point of borrowing from Fire TV is not to abandon what Roku already does well. Roku promotes voice search across apps, and TechRadar’s editorial comparison describes Roku as strong in universal search, app coverage, free content, and live-TV discovery. TechRadar also describes Fire TV as app-rich, integrated with Alexa, and strong in universal search, while judging its interface ad-heavy and Amazon-forward. Those are the publication’s qualitative assessments, not controlled measurements or a guarantee about every device.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Roku should keep search focused on helping viewers find a title and understand where it can be watched. A more useful profile system and better-organized live and free destinations would complement that approach. If discovery instead gives undue prominence to platform-owned or sponsored material, it would weaken the reason to make the change.

Voice and smart-home choices that fit the platform

Amazon’s Alexa integration is one of the strengths TechRadar identifies for Fire TV. Roku’s current product page advertises voice search and a Voice Remote with TV power and volume. These are different kinds of value: voice control can help viewers search and operate the TV, while a broader assistant integration can connect TV use with a household’s other smart devices. Roku could improve discovery without needing to reproduce every part of Amazon’s assistant ecosystem.

How the platforms differ for everyday viewing

Question Roku Fire TV
Can search span services? Roku advertises voice search across apps; TechRadar describes Roku as strong in universal search. The exact results and viewing options may depend on services and device. TechRadar also describes Fire TV as strong in universal search. Amazon’s Find section searches videos and Appstore apps or lets viewers browse categories.
Can people personalize a shared TV? The cited Roku product and feature pages do not establish a comparable profile feature. Amazon documents profiles for recommendations, watchlists, viewing history, watch progress, and some app, channel, and setting customization. Some purchases and subscriptions are shared.
How are live and free options surfaced? Roku advertises access to apps and free content; its product page says The Roku Channel includes “500+ live TV channels,” without attaching a publication date to that figure. The OS feature history documents a Live TV Zone, with region and device differences. Amazon documents separate Free and Live destinations. Live access depends on supported apps and subscriptions.
How much does the interface favor platform-owned material? TechRadar’s comparison describes Roku favorably for discovery, but the cited material does not provide a measured share of sponsored or platform-owned screen space. TechRadar characterizes Fire TV’s interface as ad-heavy and Amazon-forward; this is editorial judgment, not a screen-space measurement.
Does performance settle the choice? No universal speed conclusion is established by the cited sources. TechRadar says performance varies. Model, software, and use matter, so this comparison does not establish a universal speed winner.

Roku’s recent changes do not prove it is copying Fire TV

Roku’s OS feature history describes search additions to What to Watch and Live TV Zone in November 2025, plus Bluetooth Headphone Mode for Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus. Separately, TV Tech reported on October 16, 2025, that Roku had announced live sports scores, AI-powered voice discovery, interactive trailers, “Ways to Watch,” and planned search expansion, with updates expected in the coming months. That report records an announcement and expected timing; it does not establish that every feature has since reached every Roku device.

  • Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
  • Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

These developments point to Roku investing in discovery, but they do not establish a plan to add Fire TV-style profiles or reproduce Fire TV’s navigation. The case for profiles and clearer destinations is a recommendation about what might make Roku more useful, not a claim about Roku’s roadmap. Consult TV Tech’s October 16, 2025 report alongside Roku’s current feature history for rollout context.

Which Roku stick makes sense if you are choosing hardware?

The software argument does not determine which streaming stick to buy. Roku’s product page lists the Streaming Stick (HD), model 3840R, with output up to 1080p and dual-band Wi-Fi. It also lists the Streaming Stick Plus, which Roku identifies as offering 4K with HDR10+, and the Streaming Stick 4K, which adds Dolby Vision and long-range Wi-Fi. A 4K or HDR feature only helps when the TV and the content support it. Check Roku’s current Streaming Stick lineup for model details; this article does not establish the exact Fire TV Stick retail model currently available.
