To turn off Roku private listening, stop the session using the control that started it: tap the headphones icon in the Roku app, unplug headphones from the remote, or disconnect Bluetooth headphones in Roku settings. Roku’s current interface calls the feature Headphone Mode.
First, identify how your headphones connect
Use the matching method below. The app, a remote headphone jack, and Bluetooth headphones connected to the Roku device have separate off controls; you do not need to disable the Roku app or network control.
- Headphones connected to your phone or tablet: Turn off Headphone Mode in the Roku app.
- Headphones plugged into the Roku remote: Unplug them from the remote.
- Bluetooth headphones paired directly with Roku: Choose Disconnect in the wireless-headphones settings.
Turn off Headphone Mode in the Roku mobile app
- Open the Roku app and select Remote.
- Tap the headphones icon to deactivate Headphone Mode. Roku’s official instructions say to tap the icon again when you want to turn the mode off.
If wired headphones are plugged into your phone or tablet while the Roku app is open, unplugging them also toggles Headphone Mode off. If you cannot find the headphones icon, update the Roku app and check whether your Roku device supports mobile Headphone Mode. For the app to connect, the phone or tablet and Roku device must be on the same wireless network.
Turn off headphones connected to the Roku remote
Unplug the headphones completely from the headphone jack on the Roku remote. This applies only to remotes with a headphone jack. Roku says the TV speakers resume automatically at their previous volume. See Roku’s remote instructions.

Disconnect Bluetooth headphones from Roku
- On your Roku device, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones.
- Select the connected headphones and choose Disconnect.
If content is already playing, Roku also documents a route through the Star options menu: open Wireless headphones, select the headphones, then choose Disconnect. You can also turn off the headphones to disconnect them. See Roku’s Bluetooth Headphone Mode instructions.
If Headphone Mode will not turn off
The app control is missing
Update the Roku app and check device compatibility. Roku notes that some devices do not support mobile Headphone Mode, so the icon may not appear even after an update. The app connection also requires your mobile device and Roku player to share a wireless network.

Another listening session is active
Mobile app listening and remote headphone listening cannot be active at the same time. Connecting headphones to a compatible voice remote deactivates mobile sessions. Roku supports app Headphone Mode connections from up to four mobile devices.
You are watching content from an external source on a soundbar
Roku Streambar and certain Roku soundbar products support Headphone Mode only when you are using their built-in streaming player. The feature may not work with content from an external console, Blu-ray player, or cable or satellite box. Check the support information for your exact model before relying on a device-specific behavior. Roku’s Headphone Mode troubleshooting guide covers further issues.
