Yes—a compatible Roku can connect to public Wi-Fi, including some hotel and college networks, but the connection is only as trustworthy as the hotspot you join. Roku’s Hotel & Dorm Connect helps with networks that require a browser-based sign-in; it does not certify the network as safe or make the connection secure. Verify the network with venue staff, keep the Roku updated, and use a personal mobile hotspot instead when you want a generally more secure option.
What using a Roku on public Wi-Fi does—and does not—mean
Connecting a Roku to a public network does not, by itself, mean your passwords have been exposed. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites use encryption. That protection applies to information sent to an encrypted website; it does not establish that the hotspot is genuine or that a website operator is trustworthy. A fraudulent sign-in page can still deceive you even if the page uses HTTPS or displays a lock icon.
Roku’s Hotel & Dorm Connect is an access feature for compatible devices on networks that require a web-browser login. Roku’s setup guidance explains how to authenticate, not how the network is secured. The available official guidance does not establish Roku-specific encryption behavior or a Roku VPN feature, and it does not quantify attacks against Roku devices on public Wi-Fi.

Choose the network that fits your situation
| Connection | Trust and security | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel or dorm Wi-Fi | Confirm the exact network name and sign-in procedure with venue staff. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites use encryption; the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) still advises caution and avoiding sensitive activities on public networks. | Hotel & Dorm Connect can help a compatible Roku get through a browser-based login. Coverage, speed, and service depend on the venue. |
| Personal mobile hotspot | CISA says your own mobile network connection, or wireless hotspot, is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi. | It requires mobile coverage and an available data plan or allowance. Roku’s cited setup guidance does not compare hotspot costs or performance. |
Neither choice is risk-free. For a streaming session, a verified venue network may be the practical option; if you cannot confirm the hotspot or prefer not to rely on it, consider your phone’s hotspot if coverage and data allow.

Prepare the Roku before you travel
- Check that your Roku model supports Hotel & Dorm Connect. Compatibility varies by device, so consult Roku’s current device comparison chart before relying on the feature.
- Activate the device before leaving, and pack its remote and power adapter.
- If the Roku has been disconnected for an extended period, Roku recommends reconnecting it to your home network and manually checking for a software update before the trip.
- Bring a computer or smartphone with Wi-Fi and a browser. You may need it to complete a venue’s sign-in process.
- A high-speed HDMI cable is not needed when traveling with a Roku Streaming Stick or Roku TV, according to Roku’s travel setup guidance.
Connect with Hotel & Dorm Connect
- On the Roku, open Settings > Network > Set up new wireless connection.
- Choose the venue’s Wi-Fi network only after confirming its exact name and sign-in steps with staff.
- When prompted, select I am at a hotel or college dorm.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Use a computer or smartphone to complete the browser-based authentication if the venue requires it.
- After authentication, check the Roku network menu for the venue network and a Connected status.
A captive-portal sign-in is a way to gain network access, not proof that the hotspot is secure. If the network name or login process differs from what staff described, stop and confirm before proceeding.

Reduce avoidable risks while connecting
- Verify the hotspot. CISA warns that malicious actors can create networks with names similar to legitimate ones. Ask venue staff for the exact name and the expected login steps rather than choosing the closest-looking option.
- Do not enter sensitive information into an unexpected page. The FTC notes that HTTPS encrypts information in transit to a website, but cannot protect you from a scam site’s operator. Be especially cautious if a setup page unexpectedly asks for payment, account credentials, or personal details.
- Keep the software current. Install available Roku updates before travel, particularly if the device has been offline for a long time. CISA also advises keeping device software current.
- Use official Roku support and activation pages. Roku says its legitimate sites end in roku.com and that activation and support are free. Its support team will not ask for your passwords or ask you to install software on your computer. Treat requests for payment, passwords, or remote-access software as warning signs.
- Reserve sensitive tasks for a more trusted connection. CISA advises avoiding sensitive activities on public networks. Do not use a Roku setup session as a reason to enter payment or personal information into a page you cannot verify.
When Hotel & Dorm Connect does not work
- The Roku cannot find the network: Recheck the network name with staff and try the venue’s stated connection process. Do not switch to a similarly named hotspot without confirmation.
- The sign-in page does not appear or authentication fails: Follow Roku’s on-screen instructions using a Wi-Fi-enabled phone or computer with a browser. Ask venue staff whether the network requires a particular login step.
- The device is not compatible: Hotel & Dorm Connect support varies by Roku model. Check Roku’s current device comparison chart; if the device cannot use the venue’s sign-in flow, a personal hotspot may be an alternative if your phone, coverage, and data plan permit it.
- A page claims to be Roku support or activation and asks for money or a password: Stop. Roku states that activation and support are free, and legitimate Roku sites end in roku.com.
