“Cutting out” can mean buffering, a black screen, a lost TV signal, or a Roku that restarts. The fix depends on which symptom you see: buffering usually calls for checking the network or app, while picture loss calls for checking HDMI and the TV input. If the Roku restarts or shows a low-power warning, check its power source first.
First identify what is cutting out
Note what happens when the problem occurs. Buffering or Wi-Fi disconnections point toward the network or streaming service. A black screen or intermittent picture points toward the TV input or HDMI path. A Roku that reboots points toward power. If only one app or title fails, compare it with other content before changing network or hardware settings.
| What you observe | First area to check |
|---|---|
| Buffering, weak signal, or Wi-Fi drops | Roku network status, Wi-Fi signal, and household internet use |
| Black screen or intermittent picture | TV input, HDMI connection, and any receiver or soundbar in the signal path |
| Random restart or low-power warning | Power adapter and outlet rather than the TV’s USB port |
| One app, title, or service fails | Other content in the app, app updates, and the provider’s service status |
Fix buffering and Wi-Fi disconnections
On the Roku, open Settings > Network > About to view the reported signal strength, then choose Check connection. Roku describes a Poor or Fair reading as a weak signal. Its guidance says buffering, Wi-Fi drops, or a weak-signal message usually indicate a problem with the wireless connection between the Roku and router. This is a troubleshooting lead, not proof that the router is faulty. Roku’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps were last updated September 9, 2026.

Improve the wireless path
- Restart the Roku, modem, and router.
- Move the Roku and router closer together, reduce obstructions, and avoid enclosing the Roku.
- If you use a Streaming Stick behind the TV, its position may block Wi-Fi. Roku recommends moving it away from the TV with its free HDMI extender; check whether you already have one before buying anything.
- Consider whether other devices are using the internet heavily while the Roku buffers.
Test the network before replacing equipment
If your Roku model and router both support it, try connecting to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Some Roku models cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels. If a supported network does not appear, Roku suggests trying router channels 36–48 or 149–165. Ethernet can help isolate a wireless problem only if your specific Roku device or a compatible adapter supports it.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
If other devices on the same Wi-Fi also have trouble, the issue may extend beyond the Roku. If available, connect the Roku temporarily to another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. Roku says that a successful connection on another network suggests the home network may be the cause. A new router or mesh system is a later consideration only if these checks point to a broader coverage or network-capability problem.
Fix a black screen or intermittent picture
- Make sure the TV is on and set to the HDMI input used by the Roku.
- Firmly reconnect the Roku or its HDMI cable. For a Streaming Stick, check that it is seated securely in the TV’s HDMI port.
- Try another HDMI port, then test with another cable if one is available.
- If the Roku passes through an AV receiver or soundbar, connect it directly to the TV temporarily. If that changes the result, the intermediate device or its connection may be involved.
Roku recommends using the supplied HDMI cable. If you establish that a replacement is needed, its setup guidance specifies a High Speed HDMI Cable for a TV supporting 720p or 1080p, and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for a TV supporting 4K Ultra HD or HDR. A 4K/HDR connection must also support HDCP 2.2. See Roku’s setup instructions. Do not replace a cable before checking the input and connections.

Stop random restarts and low-power warnings
A TV’s USB port may not provide enough power for the Roku. Roku recommends plugging the player into a wall outlet with the supplied adapter when a low-power warning appears or the player restarts randomly. Some TVs also switch off USB power when the TV is off or in standby, which can make the Roku boot again when the TV turns on. See Roku’s guidance on player restarts. Use the supplied compatible adapter for this test rather than guessing at a generic replacement.
When only one app, title, or service fails
Try another title in the same app, then try another app. If several apps or titles fail, check the Roku’s connection and whether other household devices are using the internet heavily. If only one title or service fails, check the provider’s service status. For an app that will not load or crashes, check for an app update; account or playback problems specific to that service may require its support team. Roku’s content playback troubleshooting covers these checks.

Use this isolation sequence
- Classify the symptom as buffering, picture or signal loss, or a restart.
- For buffering or loading problems, check Settings > Network > About and run Check connection.
- Compare more than one app or title to determine whether the failure is limited to a service.
- For network symptoms, check other devices on the same Wi-Fi. If possible, test the Roku on another network or a phone hotspot.
- For picture problems, try another TV input and temporarily bypass any receiver or soundbar.
- For low-power messages or restarts, use the supplied adapter in a wall outlet.
- If the problem persists, contact Roku support or your internet provider for device-wide or network symptoms. Contact the streaming service for a failure limited to its content or app.
When to consider a factory reset
Use a factory reset only after the symptom-specific checks have failed. Roku says a reset erases device settings and requires you to set up apps again. Because that is more disruptive than testing the connection, input, or power source, do not use it as the first troubleshooting step.

Roku’s support pages provide troubleshooting procedures, not a measured ranking of why devices cut out or a statistic showing how often each cause occurs. There is no supported basis here to claim that one cause is the most common across all Roku devices. The symptom and isolation tests above are more useful than assuming every dropout requires new hardware.
