For independent viewing on multiple TVs, plan on one Roku streaming player per TV. A single player can be moved between sets, but it serves only the TV it is connected to at that moment. You can link several players to one Roku account for simpler household management, or use separate accounts to keep channel setups distinct.
How to choose a Roku setup for multiple TVs
| Setup | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One Roku player per TV | People who want to use different TVs independently | Each TV needs its own player, HDMI connection, power and internet access. See Roku’s player setup instructions. |
| One player moved between TVs | Occasional use on different TVs when they are not needed at the same time | The player works only with the TV it is connected to. Moving it means reconnecting it and selecting the appropriate HDMI input. |
| Roku TV | Someone buying or replacing a television | Roku OS is built into the TV, so that screen does not need a separate player. It is a television choice, not an add-on for an existing set. See Roku’s setup guidance. |
For a home where people may watch different content on different screens at once, the practical choice is a Roku streaming device for each independently used TV. The available setup guidance does not establish a current top-five model ranking, prices or performance comparisons, so choose a current player based on the resolution and features your TV supports rather than relying on an unverified ranking.
Do you need a Roku for each TV?
Yes, if you want each TV to stream independently. Roku’s setup process connects a player to one television through HDMI and activates that player for use. The player can be unplugged and connected to another television, but it does not provide separate playback on both TVs at once. For a Roku player, check that each TV has an available HDMI port, power access and a reliable internet connection.

Yes. Roku allows multiple devices to be linked to one account, and recommends using one account to make household purchases, preferences and device management easier. Channel additions and removals sync to linked devices that support those channels. Channel availability on the account does not necessarily mean a service is activated or signed in on every player.

Separate accounts are also possible if different household members need distinct channel configurations. Each Roku device can be linked to only one account at a time, and each account needs a unique email address. Roku says creating an account is free: “There is NEVER a charge to create a Roku account.” See Roku’s account guidance.
Do Roku apps and subscriptions transfer to a second device?
Some supported apps may sign you in automatically on another Roku through Automatic Account Link, but not every app participates. Be prepared to enter service credentials again and complete any required channel activation. Roku account sharing also does not override a streaming provider’s rules: providers may limit device activations or simultaneous streams, so check the terms for each service. Roku explains the account-linking feature in its Automatic Account Link help page.

Set up a Roku player for each TV
- Connect the player to HDMI. Use the supplied cable. If a Streaming Stick is obstructed by the TV casing or crowded ports, an HDMI extender may help. Follow Roku’s player setup instructions.
- Connect power. If the TV’s USB port reports low power or does not reliably power the player, use the supplied wall adapter and cable.
- Select the correct TV input. Turn on the television and choose the HDMI input where the player is connected.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and finish device setup. Pair or prepare the remote, connect the player to the household network, and allow software updates to complete. Roku recommends choosing Automatic display type. 4K or HDR requires compatibility from both the player and the TV.
- Link the player to a Roku account. Use the household account for centralized management or a separate account when a distinct channel arrangement is needed.
- Add channels and sign in where needed. Channel changes can sync to supported devices, but individual services may still require activation or a fresh login.
- Name the device by room. A label such as “Living Room” or “Bedroom” makes it easier to tell players apart in account and mobile-app management. Roku explains how to set or update a device name and location.
Check compatibility before choosing a player
- HDMI: A Roku streaming player needs an available HDMI port. Check port placement and clearance, especially for a stick-style player.
- Resolution and HDR: 4K and HDR require a compatible player and TV. A higher-capability player cannot add those features to an incompatible television.
- Power: Some TV USB ports may not provide enough power. Use the supplied wall adapter if the player reports low power or fails to stay on.
- Network: Each independently used player needs internet access. Check that Wi-Fi reaches the TVs where you plan to install players.
- Service rules: Confirm activation and concurrent-stream limits with each streaming provider; Roku account settings do not change those limits.
Which setup should you use?
- Choose one player per TV if the screens should stream independently.
- Move one player between TVs if only one set needs Roku at a time and reconnecting it is acceptable.
- Consider a Roku TV when purchasing a new television, rather than as a way to add Roku to a set you already own.
- Use one Roku account for simpler management, or separate accounts for distinct channel setups. Either way, expect some apps to require their own sign-in.
