Short answer: A strict roguelike follows Rogue’s core structure—procedurally generated runs, permanent death, turn-based grid play, and demanding resource management. A roguelite keeps the repeat-run loop but relaxes some of those conventions, most often by letting currency, upgrades, characters, equipment, or story progress survive death. The distinction is a useful spectrum, not a universally enforced rule.

Roguelike and roguelite at a glance

Both labels describe games built around repeated attempts. You enter a run, make decisions under risk, eventually die or finish, and begin again. The important question is what a new attempt retains and how closely the game resembles the 1980 dungeon crawler Rogue.

Axis Strict roguelike tendency Common roguelite tendency
Run reset Death removes the active character, inventory, map state, and immediate advantages. The run ends, but selected rewards remain for later attempts.
Death Permadeath applies to the current run with little or no ordinary checkpoint recovery. Death still ends the run, while the broader account, character, or base can improve.
Movement and combat Usually turn-based and grid-based. Often real-time and free-moving, though hybrids exist.
World structure Randomly generated levels, encounters, and item layouts are central. Procedural variation is common but may be combined with fixed rooms, routes, or set pieces.
Systems Complex interactions, inventory decisions, identification, and scarce resources support multiple solutions. Systems may be streamlined around action, builds, or short runs.
Relationship to Rogue Close descendant of the original dungeon-crawler structure. Uses selected roguelike ideas more loosely.

These are tendencies rather than a scoring system. A game can sit between the columns, and players may reasonably use either label depending on which feature they emphasize.

Where the terms came from

Rogue established the run-based template

Rogue launched in 1980 with randomly generated dungeon levels, rising difficulty, and permadeath. Each attempt produced a new set of tactical problems, so learning the game and making careful decisions mattered more than memorizing a single route. When modern designers borrow that structure, they are drawing on the historical meaning of roguelike.

The Berlin Interpretation supplied a reference point

At the 2008 International Roguelike Development Conference, developers described eight design parameters now known as the Berlin Interpretation:

  1. Random map generation
  2. Permadeath
  3. Turn-based combat
  4. Grid-based movement
  5. Complexity that allows multiple solutions
  6. Non-modal actions, meaning actions remain available through a consistent interaction model rather than switching into separate modes
  7. Resource management
  8. Hack-and-slash combat

The list is best used as a vocabulary and checklist. Steam’s 2022 explanation notes that “roguelike” is often used as an umbrella term and that the strict definition remains debated. It is not a pass/fail certification: a game can omit one parameter while preserving the genre’s characteristic decision-making, or include several parameters without feeling like a traditional roguelike.

What “permadeath” actually means

Permadeath means that death ends the active character and the current run instead of returning you to an ordinary checkpoint. You start another attempt, usually with a new map state and a new set of immediate resources. The term describes the consequence for the run, not necessarily the destruction of every form of progress in the game.

Run-level loss

In a strict roguelike, the character you developed during a run, the items in that character’s inventory, the explored map, and temporary advantages generally disappear when the character dies. The next run starts from the baseline defined by the game. Save rules vary: some games allow a single save that is deleted on death, while others restrict saving to quitting safely. Those implementation details do not change the central idea that a normal checkpoint cannot restore the dead run.

Permadeath is not the same as deleting everything

A game can have permanent death for a run while preserving settings, achievements, unlocked modes, or player knowledge. In a roguelite, the retained layer is usually much more substantial: currency, permanent stat improvements, new characters, weapons, items, abilities, or story access can carry into future attempts. “Perma” therefore refers to the active run’s character, not automatically to the entire game profile.

Why the distinction changes the experience

  • Risk: Losing a powerful build makes each decision consequential.
  • Learning: A failed attempt teaches enemy patterns, item behavior, and route choices even when no numerical reward survives.
  • Pacing: Short runs can make repeated failure feel like a normal rhythm; long runs make death a larger time commitment.
  • Accessibility: Persistent upgrades can reduce the penalty of early mistakes without removing the run-ending consequence.

What progression means in a roguelite

Roguelite progression separates what belongs to one run from what belongs to the player’s continuing profile. The run still resets when the character dies, but selected rewards survive and shape the next attempt. Steam describes roguelites as borrowing roguelike elements more loosely, with death being “not-quite-so-permanent” because points, upgrades, or objects can remain.

Progression layer What resets at death What may persist Design effect
Run build Temporary weapons, buffs, abilities, and synergies Usually nothing from that specific build Creates experimentation and risk within each attempt
Currency Unspent or run-specific currency may be lost A separate metacurrency can fund future upgrades Turns failed runs into partial progress
Unlocks Current map and encounter state Characters, weapons, items, rooms, or rule modifiers Expands the pool of future possibilities
Permanent upgrades Temporary run statistics Health, damage, starting options, or other profile improvements Makes later attempts more forgiving or strategically different
Narrative access Current run position Dialogue, scenes, lore, or story branches Lets failure advance the broader arc

Not every roguelite uses every layer. Some preserve only unlocks; others provide a large upgrade tree. A persistent reward is evidence of roguelite design, but its presence alone does not tell you how much of the game remains challenging.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
  1. Check the consequence of death. Does the active character and run end, or can an ordinary checkpoint restore them? If death merely reloads a checkpoint, the game is not using permadeath in the relevant sense.
  2. Separate run progress from profile progress. Write down what disappears and what remains. Currency, upgrades, unlocked equipment, characters, and story access are profile-level persistence; a weapon found during the current attempt is run-level progress.
  3. Look at movement and combat. Turn-based, grid-based play points toward the traditional roguelike model. Real-time, free movement points toward a looser roguelite interpretation, but neither format is mandatory.
  4. Verify procedural variation. Determine whether maps, rooms, encounters, enemy placements, or item locations change between attempts. A few random rewards do not necessarily make the whole game procedurally generated.
  5. Assess systemic depth. Ask whether inventory limits, identification, hunger, ammunition, durability, positioning, and interacting rules create several viable solutions. This complexity is a strong signal of the classic tradition.
  6. Compare the whole structure with Rogue. The closer the combination of random dungeons, permanent run loss, turn-based grid tactics, and resource management, the stronger the case for “roguelike.” A game that keeps only repeated runs and random rewards is more naturally described as a roguelite.

This process produces a reasoned description rather than an arbitrary verdict. You can also state the result precisely: for example, “a real-time roguelite with permanent account upgrades” communicates more than a bare genre tag.

Why procedural generation alone does not make a roguelike

Randomly assembled levels are only one parameter. A game can generate a different map every time while allowing checkpoints, retaining the entire character build, or using no meaningful resource decisions. That makes it procedurally generated, but not necessarily roguelike.

Procedural generation matters to the genre because it changes the information problem. You cannot follow a memorized route, so you must evaluate the current map, available resources, and immediate threats. The strongest examples combine that uncertainty with irreversible run consequences and systems that interact in unexpected ways. If randomness is cosmetic and the optimal solution is unchanged, the procedural element contributes little to the roguelike experience.

Key differences in moment-to-moment play

Turn-based versus real-time decisions

Traditional roguelikes give the player time to consider each movement, attack, item use, and retreat. Because enemies often respond after the player’s action, positioning and sequencing become central. Many roguelites use real-time combat, where reflexes, aiming, dodging, and timing share the workload with planning. Hybrids can pause real-time action, use turn-like arenas, or combine real-time movement with menu-driven decisions.

Grid movement versus free movement

Grid-based movement makes distance, line of sight, doors, corners, and area effects discrete and legible. Free movement permits continuous positioning and often supports platforming or twin-stick controls. Neither choice determines quality; it indicates which part of the historical model the game adopts.

Resource management versus build collection

A classic roguelike may ask whether to spend healing now, carry an unidentified item, risk a fight for food, or save ammunition for a stronger enemy. A roguelite may emphasize collecting temporary upgrades that combine into a powerful build before the run ends. Many modern games use both approaches, but the balance affects how failure feels: scarcity creates long-term planning within a run, while build discovery rewards experimentation and synergy hunting.

Common misconceptions

“Every game with random levels is a roguelike.”

No. Random levels satisfy one Berlin parameter. Check death rules, persistence, movement, and systemic resource decisions as well.

“Roguelite means there is no permadeath.”

Usually the opposite is true: the current run still ends permanently. What changes is that selected rewards survive, reducing the total loss.

“A roguelike must be turn-based.”

Turn-based grid play is central to the strict historical reading, but the community uses “roguelike” more broadly. Describe the combat format alongside the label when precision matters.

“Permanent upgrades make a game easy.”

Persistence can reduce early friction, but designers may compensate with stronger enemies, deeper floors, harsher resource demands, or more complex unlock pools. The relevant question is what the upgrades do to decision-making, not whether they exist.

“The Berlin Interpretation settles the argument.”

The 2008 parameters document a design tradition; they are not a governing authority. Steam explicitly presents the strict definition as debated, and Cloudfall Studios has argued that the checklist can be too narrow for a genre that has evolved.

How to describe a game accurately

When writing a review, buying guide, or store description, combine the genre term with the features that matter to the reader:

  • Death rule: “Runs end on death; no checkpoint restores the character.”
  • Persistence: “Currency and character unlocks carry between runs, while weapons found during a run reset.”
  • Controls: “Real-time, free-moving combat” or “turn-based, grid-based combat.”
  • Generation: “Rooms and enemy placements vary procedurally, with some fixed story encounters.”
  • Systems: “Inventory capacity, identification, and scarce healing create multiple solutions.”

This wording prevents a reader from assuming that a label guarantees a particular difficulty, camera style, or amount of progression. It also acknowledges that a game can be a roguelite in structure while retaining one or more classic roguelike traits.

Choosing the experience that fits you

Choose a stricter roguelike structure if you want

  • Every run to begin close to a clean slate.
  • Turn-by-turn planning and grid positioning.
  • High-stakes inventory and resource decisions.
  • Emergent solutions produced by interacting systems.
  • Learning and judgment to matter more than permanent statistical power.

Choose a roguelite structure if you want

  • Run-based replayability with a continuing sense of account progress.
  • Unlock trees, new characters, equipment, or story content.
  • Real-time action, free movement, or other formats unlike the original dungeon crawler.
  • Failure to provide some lasting reward without removing the need to complete a run.
  • A gradual way to broaden options or reduce the severity of early attempts.

These preferences overlap. A player can enjoy strict run resets in one game and persistent upgrades in another; the labels describe structure, not a difficulty ranking or a quality judgment.

The practical bottom line

Use roguelike for the close descendant of Rogue: procedural runs, permadeath, turn-based grid tactics, complex systems, and resource management. Use roguelite when a game keeps the repeated-run loop but adapts the format, especially by preserving currency, upgrades, unlocks, equipment, or story progress after death. Because the boundary is debated, the most useful explanation always names the exact death rule, the persistence layer, the movement model, and the role of procedural generation instead of relying on either word alone.
